Book excerpt: "The Brahmåa's Net Sutra, translated by A. Charles Muller and Kenneth K. Tanaka, is the primary extant vinaya text that articulates a set of precepts from a Mahayana perspective, mainly intended for 'bodhisattva practitioners,' primarily householders, rather than renunciant monks or nuns. Before the appearance of this text the monastic rules and regulations in East Asian Buddhism were defined fully by the 'Hinayana' vinaya, most importantly the Fourt-part Vinaya associated with the Dharmaguptaka school in India. With the appearance of the Brahmåa's Net Sutra many East Indian schools diversified their precept practices, with some groups of practitioners taking up either set of precepts, often utilizing both. Composed in China around 420, the Brahmåa's Net Sutra is based on various contemporary Mahayana and Hinayana vinaya writings and includes extensive discussion of indigenous Chinese moral concepts such as filial piety, etc. The text is based in the same mainstream Mahayana thought of the Flower Ornament Sutra (Huayan jing), the Nirvana Sutra (Niepan jing), and the Sutra for Humane Kings (Renwang jing). In fact, the extend of the Brahmåa's Net Sutra's agreement with the Flower Ornament Sutra is so pronounced that it is regarded as the 'concluding sutra' of the latter."--Back cove

Book excerpt: The Brahmajala, one of the Buddha’s most important discourses, weaves a net of sixty-two cases capturing all the speculative views on the self and the world. The massive commentary and subcommentary allow for a close in-depth study of the work. The book contains a lengthy treatise on the Theravada conception of the Bodhisattva ideal. The long introduction is itself a modern philosophical commentary on the sutta.

Book excerpt: The spiritual training of a Buddhist comprises the Three Learning: precepts, meditation, and wisdom. Observance of precepts is the foundation of ones spiritual journey to Buddhahood. Classified into three clustersrestraining precepts, precepts for doing good dharmas, and precepts for benefiting sentient beingsBodhisattva precepts are called the three clusters of pure precepts. This book, Rulus third, presents seven sutras in English, all translated from texts in the Chinese Buddhist Canon. Five of these seven English translations have never before been published in book form. Sutras 1 and 2 cover the ten good karmas; Sutra 3 teaches repentance of sins; Sutra 4 expounds the Mahayana Vinaya; Sutras 57 each contain time-honored Bodhisattva precepts. Sutra 6 is the well-known Brahma Net Sutra; Sutra 7, Sutra of the Upasaka Precepts, also covers the six paramitas in detail. Buddhist terms are explained in the glossary. The translators introduction presents sets of Buddhist precepts and describes the arrival of the Hinayana Vinaya in China. It explains the development of the Vinaya School, a Mahayana school originated in China, and summarizes its tenets. It compares voice-hearer precepts with Bodhisattva precepts, and discusses five texts of the latter. It also touches on selecting those Bodhisattva precepts that suit our modern times. Such precepts will be fewer in number but complete in spirit. Buddhist or non-Buddhist, those who seek to benefit themselves and others need to learn and observe such Bodhisattva precepts.

Book excerpt: (also known as the Vajracchedikā or Diamond Sutra) A highly readable translation of the Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra as transmitted in the Chinese tradition, this brief text summarizes the teachings on emptiness of the Prajñāpāramitā, the perfection of wisdom. In this Sutra, the Buddha teaches his disciple Subhuti the subtle points of Buddhist philosophy on emptiness, the lack of true existence of anything—thoughts are illusions; life is a dream. Master Hua enriches the text by providing details and narratives, and he explains how to incorporate the concept of emptiness into our lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sūtra of Perfect Enlightenment, used in monastic education for more than a millennium, is a concise guide to the key paradigms of the practice systems of the East Asian meditational schools (Ch'an, Sǒn, and Zen). Contained in its twelve chapters are definitive explanations of the meaning of innate and actualized enlightenment, sudden and gradual enlightenment, the true nature of ignorance and suffering, along with numerous examples of methods of contemplation that accord with and reflect the basic Ch'an views on enlightenment and practice. Although the Sutra was popular throughout the East Asian region, it attained its highest canonical status within the Korean Chogye school, where it is still a key text in the core curriculum of modern-day monks and nuns. The Sutra is translated here in full, along with the eloquent and revelatory commentary of the Chǒson monk Kihwa (1376–1433).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Shiva Sutra was revealed to and written down by Vasugupta (ca 875--925 CE). The Sutra is considered mystical and of divine origin. For Kashmir Shaivism, it is one of the most important key sources. It outlines the teachings of Shaiva non-dualism, where the focus is on attaining the Ultimate Reality in which everything is created and dissolved. This ultimate state is called Param Shiva and is beyond description. For attaining this state of Shiva for those who remember to reside in their own inherent-self-nature, which is of the nature of Shiva, no effort or no way is needed. For everyone else there are three ways for the attainment of Param Shiva described in the Shiva Sutra. There is no strict order given for meditating on the Sutra. It depends on one's stage of evolution. Translation from the original Sanskrit with notes.

The editor ... intends to introduce not just new studies, but a new field of study.... However, rather than marking the birth of Buddhist apocrypha studies, the book ... successfully demonstrates its early maturity." --Monumenta Serica 40 (1992) "The essays are without exception meticulous in scholarship and path-finding in significance." --Journal of Chinese Religions 20 (1992)

Book excerpt: This is the extended and annotated edition including * an extensive annotation of more than 10.000 words about the history and basics of Buddhism, written by Thomas William Rhys Davids The Lotus Sūtra is one of the most popular and influential Mahāyāna sūtras, and the basis on which the Tiantai and Nichiren schools of Buddhism were established. This sutra is known for its extensive instruction on the concept and usage of skillful means – the seventh paramita or perfection of a Bodhisattva – mostly in the form of parables. It is also one of the first sutras to use the term Mahāyāna, or "Great Vehicle", Buddhism. Another concept introduced by the Lotus Sutra is the idea that the Buddha is an eternal entity, who achieved nirvana eons ago, but willingly chose to remain in the cycle of rebirth (samsara) to help teach beings the Dharma time and again.
