If the boys of to-day, inspired by the accomplishments Of these, their fellows, equal any standards which may have come down as a heritage from previous ages, my reward will indeed be suf ficient. This is just what Francis Ouimet does in The Boys' Book Of Sports.' And these things are only a small part of the Sport ing party that St. Nicholas is giving. For after reading all the hows and whys of different games, there are still left the gripping stories of young heroes who make long runs down the field, or three base hits, or who come to the tape with the winning spurt. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Physical Training for Boys and Girls: For Use by Public-School Teachers, Parents, and the Superintendents, of Junior Societies in Churches Tms book is not an argument for strengthening our belief in the efficiency of physical training; rather, it is a short manual which will guide us to some of the best methods of developing the boy and girl. We already have faith in gym nasties and athletics, in games and plays, in competitive sports; but, having nailed our flag to the mast, let us now stand by our guns and protect the boy and the girl by so developing them morally and physically that their own bodies, their own minds, and the ideals that impel them to every voluntary act of life will form a bulwark against the slings and arrows that will assail them throughout their lives. The boy and girl will never get along better by being neglected, they will certainly be well armored and forewarned if they are trained early. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Education in the High School The demands of our present-day civilization upon the physical strength of an individual make it more imperative now than ever before that due regard should be given to bodily development. The increased emphasis, therefore, upon Physical Education is warranted from every standpoint. Spencer says that the first obligation of the school is to make the pupil a good animal. The physical basis is fundamental as the foundation upon which to build manhood and womanhood. In some schools the tendency has been to place undue emphasis upon competitive exercises and upon the more strenuous forms of physical train ing called athletics. The purpose of Physical Education in a high school is not to train a few athletes, but to give systematic and properly-planned exercises to all boys and girls in order that their bodies may be developed and health promoted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Power and Health Through Progressive Exercise It must not be thought, however, that this book deals wholly with heavy gymnastics, weight-lifting, and feats of strength. Many light exercises are given as being valuable to promote elasticity and suppleness; and, in addi tion to these, - as an apprenticeship of mode rate exercises is absolutely necessary in order that one may become capable of the simplest exhibition of force, - many intermediate exer cises are carefully described, and their effects discussed. The effects of common indoor and outdoor athletic sports and exercises are gone into. All which, it is hoped, will make this volume a complete manual of physical culture, suitable alike for those boys and girls, men and women, who may wish, without the aid of a teacher, to make the best of their bodies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Standard Program for Boys: Manual for Leaders The Canadian Standard Efficiency Tests for boys were published October, 1912. Even before that date the proposed program for the boys of Canada had attracted the attention of workers with boys in the United States; and since the original publication and the widening of the scope of these tests, together with the successful working out of the pro gram in many localities and under varying conditions, leaders have felt convinced in an increasing degree that a plan of like character should be made available for boys in this country. The Association of Boys' Work Secretaries of the Young Men's Christian Association gave some attention to the matter through a special committee and accomplished enough by way of experiment to demonstrate the fact that a similar program would undoubtedly find a place here. It was evident, however, that a volunteer committee of men whose time was occupied with local matters could not carry this plan forward successfully; with this conviction before them, the Association of Boys' Work Secretaries, at a meeting in Cleveland, in May, 1916, requested the International Committee of Young Men's Christian Associations to become responsible for the development of a program of this general character. This the International Committee agreed to do, and appointed a committee to take up this work. The National Council of Young Men's Christian Associa tions of Canada very graciously granted permission to the American Committee to use any of the material desired, or to make any modification of the same which might make it available for the work in this country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Athletic Trainer In regard to the terms and routine of the training here presented, the writer has merely set forth that which would best serve a seasoned professional athlete who could devote all his time and energies to a fairly strict daily routine. This is, of course, impossible to all but the select few. The average athlete only able to spare an hour or so in the early mornings or evenings will, naturally, take a longer period (and train even more gradually) to prepare himself to arrive at his best state. He is of a class to whom natural physical exercise in the Open air means every thing - and he should miss no real Opportunity of practising either the training exercises (shown in another chapter) or his particular form of athletics. Boys and youths under twenty years of age (at the least) must be content with much less ex acting work until they are grown up to manhood. They only need to practise, without exerting themselves severely, to find style and get a grasp of things. The rest will come later on. I cheerfully acknowledge the hints and suggestions that I have received from my old friends, Charles Ransom and Harry Perry, in the preparation of this work.
