Trappers The trapper has ever been the symbol to America of robust manhood and of the desire to press forward the ideals and the civilization of the United States to their farthest bounds. No country has been too wild or rugged for him, no venture too daring, no peril too great. Many of the frontier heroes of America were trappers and hunters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home Afloat, or the Boy Trappers of the Hackensack These meadows were at one time the best known hunting and fishing grounds adjacent to the large city, and there are still living hundreds of the best citizens who can bear testimony to this fact. All this is changed. The handiwork of man, and the demands of civilization, have caused the surface of this marsh to be bisected with numerous roads. No game bird can now alight upon its waters and remain for any length of time. The noise of a passing train of cars or the screeching of the trolley car wheels scares them, and causes them to find a more secluded and quiet place. The numerous bridges crossing over the lower end or mouth of the river act as a dam, and have destroyed this one time favorite stream of the disciples of Isaac Walton. The muskrat that at one time could be seen perched upon the top of its house has almost become extinct, and is now very seldom seen. He probably recognizes that the bump of destruction in mankind, in so far as it relates to him and his family, has become very highly devel oped, and while he can occasionally be seen crawlingalong the muddy bottom of a creek, he very seldom appears on the surface of the meadow. A great many of the characters in this story are chosen from real life, while the' tale itself is one of fiction. The writer may have slightly overdrawn in his description of incidents and events. If so, he has only taken advantage of the liberty which is allowed in works of this character. It has been the author's aim to impress the youthful reader with the fact that it makes very little difference in this life in what position a young man may find himself, if he will only remain honest, energetic and thoughtful, he will meet with success. "It seems to me that I might have helped it. If I had gone to General Gordon when your father first spoke about that barrel with the eighty thousand dollars in it, and told him the whole story, things might have turned out differently. But in spite of all he said, I did not suppose that he was in earnest." "Neither did I. That any man in his sober senses should think of such a thing! Why, mother, if there had been so much money buried in that potato-patch, the General would have known it, and don't you suppose he would have found it if he'd had to plough the field up ten feet deep? Of course he would." We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Starting around 1906, Wheeler made a name for himself -- as Francis Rolt-Wheeler -- as a writer of books, mostly for boys, like The Boy with the United States Survey and The Boy with the US Trappers. He also published a 10 volume Science-History of the Universe, books for children with topics ranging from Aztecs to dinosaurs to Thomas Alva Edison, a series of books on aspects of the first world war, and some poetry and drama. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous Scouts Including Trappers, Pioneers, and Soldiers of the Frontier: Their Hazardous and Exciting Adventures, in the Mighty Drama of the White, Conquest of the American Continent Utopia. Others, satisfied with that which has come to them, have remained in one place, to build a factory; till a farm, raise a family, and be a stationary unit in world progression. These men of whom I write were often restless, roving blades. They continually looked into the beyond; if they did not do so, they were not satisfied with the quiet life, but had to be in the maelstrom of action. The perpetual boy was in them. For this reason I write of their active lives for young men, for is it not young men for action, old men for counsel? To the young man the philosopher does not appeal. Franklin is superseded by Light Horse Harry Lee. The red blood of youth sees heroes m the individuals of dash and courage; while, to him, the man of the diplomatic circle, the scientific dreamer, the scholar and poet, have little place in the affections of one in whose veins is the hot impulse to do, and not to meditate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boy's Book of Pioneers The great west and north-west of north america has always had a fascination for people; it would seem to be the happy hunting ground of our dreams - the place where a man may live in touch with wild nature, and feel the lash of the wind, the keen smack of the icy air - where real, hard, virile life is to be found and lived. Who of us has not revelled in the stories of the old-time pioneers of the west? Well, here is the story of one of those men - the first white man to venture across into the great unknown. The early history of pierre radisson, the french-canadian who opened up the west, may be summed up as follows: when but just oyer sixteen years of age, he left the fort at three rivers, on the north bank of the st. Lawrence, on a hunting jaunt with a couple of young friends, and was captured by iroquois and carried inland to the mohawk country. He was adopted into the tribe of mohawks, and became a good hunter whilst dwelling amongst them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
