Book excerpt: Pharmacists are often asked for advice regarding a wide range of botanical products, perhaps because of the accessibility of pharmacists to the general public, but also because many community pharmacies now sell a variety of botanical products. Botanical medicine is becoming big business for pharmacists. The "Trends Report" in Pharmacy Post indicates that three out of every four community pharmacies now sell herbal and homeopathic products. Although some see botanical medicine as a new niche for pharmacy, the opponents of the sale of herbs in pharmacies suggest that most pharmacists have little or no knowledge of botanical medicine. The Botanical Pharmacy addresses this problem by providing a comprehensive course review of 47 common herbs, with sections for each herb on active constituents, therapeutic uses, relevant pharmacology, adverse effects, contraindications, drug interaction, dosage regimens, extensive references to relevant medical literature, and anecdotal reports. This book will provide pharmacists with a foundation of knowledge from which they can counsel patients about the use of botanical products with confidence; this book will also provide individuals with a basic knowledge of the medicinal properties of herbs with the advanced understanding needed to make informed choices in pursuing better health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For those who want to make educated decisions about whether, and when, to use natural products, this text explains the most current scientific evidence of the roles that plants can play in our health: how they can prevent, modify, or treat disease. Since antiquity, humans have used botanicals to treat various conditions affecting their organ systems, and this book is built around explaining which plants may be used for major ailments affecting the various systems. The increasing availability of botanicals on the market, intended to be used as dietary supplements for health, has been fueled by the public's demand for a more natural approach to healthcare. Unfortunately, much of the information fed to the public on alternatives is based on anecdotal evidence (case stories), the advice of friends, or media features that often do not stand up to standards for scientific evidence. In this book Al-Achi explains current research and science that exists - or remains lacking - for the various botanicals as healthcare products. He also details the potential misuse and the dangers of some herbal formulas. Photographs of 62 medicinal plants are included. Book excerpt: As the first botanical history of World War II, Plants Go to War examines military history from the perspective of plant science. From victory gardens to drugs, timber, rubber, and fibers, plants supplied materials with key roles in victory. Vegetables provided the wartime diet both in North America and Europe, where vitamin-rich carrots, cabbages, and potatoes nourished millions. Chicle and cacao provided the chewing gum and chocolate bars in military rations. In England and Germany, herbs replaced pharmaceutical drugs; feverbark was in demand to treat malaria, and penicillin culture used a growth medium made from corn. Rubber was needed for gas masks and barrage balloons, while cotton and hemp provided clothing, canvas, and rope. Timber was used to manufacture Mosquito bombers, and wood gasification and coal replaced petroleum in European vehicles. Lebensraum, the Nazi desire for agricultural land, drove Germans eastward; troops weaponized conifers with shell bursts that caused splintering. Ironically, the Nazis condemned non-native plants, but adopted useful Asian soybeans and Mediterranean herbs. Jungle warfare and camouflage required botanical knowledge, and survival manuals detailed edible plants on Pacific islands. Botanical gardens relocated valuable specimens to safe areas, and while remote locations provided opportunities for field botany, Trees surviving in Hiroshima and Nagasaki live as a symbol of rebirth after vast destruction.
