Book excerpt: A fun reference book for all things Boston; complete with info graphics and glossary of the terms and “slang” that makes Bostonians unique. The book will include historical facts and references of the words’ origins. The book will also include landmarks, both historic and cultural, and why they’re so important to the city. The goal is to create a book for all ages to reference whether they’ve been to Boston once, lived here their whole life, or just plan to visit one day. Boston has a lot of universal references throughout pop culture and this book will be the go-to resource for people to learn more, get a laugh, and understand the people of Boston. We are working out the organization, but it will be broken into categories For example, the weather pages would begin with a few pages with some fun facts about the weather in Boston, some general weather humor info and then it will go into different anecdotes and slang explanations related to the the weather. Ex. Muggie, Scortcha, Wintah, Wicked Humid, etc… Each anecdote page will be then be accompanied by some fun facts related to the slang term. Scortcha: Anytime the weather in Boston is over 90 degrees, you will hear someone say "It's a Scortcha out there.” This is what we call hazy, hot, & humid! On a scortcha of a day a typical Bostonian would visit Dunks for an "Iced" an extra time or two, anyone with a pool will be getting a message asking "What are you doing today", and social media will be full of photos showing temperature gauges inside cars (unless you drive a "beater", they don't usually have temperature gauges). Even if we suffered a tough winter Bostonians will be complaining about the heat. In fact most conversations in Boston are weather related.........................more (Page will have accompanying art, maybe a funny caricature of someone sweating in the heat or in a float in a pool, and will have some related facts about Boston weather.. maybe avg. temperatures during summer months) SAMPLE ENTRIES Weather Concepts Scortcha Wintah Muggie Food & Drink Concepts Dunks Frappe Tonic "Swigga Tonic" Badaydas (Potatoes) Transportation Concepts Bang A Uey Beater Statie Breakdown Lane Other Concepts, To Be Categorized: Sneakahs Hawahya? Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Street: A Brief Account of a Boston Way The street is old, - as old as Boston itself. If one would look for its origin, he must go back to the days before the Puritans of St. Botolph's town set foot upon the hills that run up from Boston Harbor. Even then he is forced to fall upon conjecture, and surmise that it may have been the trail which the Indians followed from their camps on Shawmut Hills to their fisheries in the bay. William Blackstone, the only white inhabitant on Tri-mountain previous to 1630, may have trod the self-same trail on his way along the ridge, which was the principal spur from Century Hill down to the water. State Street, despite the uncertainty of its origin, has been from the very day of Boston's settlement Boston's most important thoroughfare. The street has written itself large and permanently in the records of an ancient town and on the page of a nation's history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boston Way: Plans for the Development of the Individual Child The supreme need of one who would teach or train a little child is the power to put oneself in his place - to go as far as the actual point of meeting with his actual need. What avails it that the teacher is strong, learned, skilled, if she cannot link her strength to her pupil's weakness, her knowledge to his ignorance, her skill to his lack of skill? This book is the united work of the Special Class teachers of Boston, an outline of their united experience, and is sent out in the hope that it may aid teachers and mothers everywhere, when facing a child's need, to "come where he is." Book excerpt: Why and how Boston was transformed by landmaking. Fully one-sixth of Boston is built on made land. Although other waterfront cities also have substantial areas that are built on fill, Boston probably has more than any city in North America. In Gaining Ground historian Nancy Seasholes has given us the first complete account of when, why, and how this land was created. The story of landmaking in Boston is presented geographically; each chapter traces landmaking in a different part of the city from its first permanent settlement to the present. Seasholes introduces findings from recent archaeological investigations in Boston, and relates landmaking to the major historical developments that shaped it. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, landmaking in Boston was spurred by the rapid growth that resulted from the burgeoning China trade. The influx of Irish immigrants in the mid-nineteenth century prompted several large projects to create residential land—not for the Irish, but to keep the taxpaying Yankees from fleeing to the suburbs. Many landmaking projects were undertaken to cover tidal flats that had been polluted by raw sewage discharged directly onto them, removing the "pestilential exhalations" thought to cause illness. Land was also added for port developments, public parks, and transportation facilities, including the largest landmaking project of all, the airport. A separate chapter discusses the technology of landmaking in Boston, explaining the basic method used to make land and the changes in its various components over time. The book is copiously illustrated with maps that show the original shoreline in relation to today's streets, details from historical maps that trace the progress of landmaking, and historical drawings and photographs.

Book excerpt: “I want to be intelligent, even if I do live in Boston.” —an anonymous Bostonian, 1929 In this spectacular romp through the Puritan City, Neil Miller relates the scintillating story of how a powerful band of Brahmin moral crusaders helped make Boston the most straitlaced city in America, forever linked with the infamous catchphrase “Banned in Boston.” Bankrolled by society’s upper crust, the New England Watch and Ward Society acted as a quasi-vigilante police force and notorious literary censor for over eighty years. Often going over the heads of local authorities, it orchestrated the mass censorship of books and plays, raided gambling dens and brothels, and utilized spies to entrap prostitutes and their patrons. Miller deftly traces the growth of the Watch and Ward, from its formation in 1878 to its waning days in the 1950s. During its heyday, the society and its imitators banished modern classics by Hemingway, Faulkner, and Sinclair Lewis and went to war with publishing and literary giants such as Alfred A. Knopf and The Atlantic Monthly. To the chagrin of the Watch and Ward, some writers rode the national wave of publicity that accompanied the banning of their books. Upton Sinclair declared staunchly, “I would rather be banned in Boston than read anywhere else because when you are banned in Boston, you are read everywhere else.” Others faced extinction or tried to barter their way onto bookshelves, like Walt Whitman, who hesitantly removed lines from Leaves of Grass under the watchful eye of the Watch and Ward. As the Great Depression unfolded, the society shifted its focus from bookstores to burlesque, successfully shuttering the Old Howard, the city’s legendary theater that attracted patrons from T. S. Eliot to John F. Kennedy. Banned in Boston is a lively history and, despite Boston’s “liberal” reputation today, a cautionary tale of the dangers caused by moral crusaders of all stripes.
