Book excerpt: Excerpt from Book of the Wilders: A Contribution to the History of the Wilders, From 1497, in England, to the Emigratin of Martha, a Widow, and Her Family to Massachusetts Bay, in 1638, and So, Through Her Family Down to 1875, With a Genealogical Table I have found that records are not always reliable, Town records often differ from the records in the old family Bible, which must be presumed to be correct. In one instance, I had the family record from the father and again from the mother, and the dates differing materially. When the children and grandchildren have given their statements of the families that have gone before them, they are not always in the order of their birth, and the dates are often defective and it should not seem strange that many errors should creep into a work that has depended much on such testimony. Great care has been taken to make the Tables as correct as possible, and it is believed that very few essential errors will be found. Book excerpt: With a potent combination of rapid-firing Spencer rifles, aggressive and determined leadership, and unlimited confidence in themselves, the soldiers of Colonel John T. Wilder's mounted Lightning Brigade -- so christened during the summer of 1863 -- solidified a reputation in the savage battle of Chickamauga as one of the Union Army's hardest fighting and most effective combat organizations. His five Indiana and Illinois regiments, along with Eli Lilly's Indiana Battery, confronted troops from five different Confederate brigades during three clays of fighting, and badly bloodied them all. In Blue Lightning, author Richard A. Baumgartner skillfully blends dozens of first-person narratives, including eyewitness accounts from 60 Lightning Brigade officers and enlisted men, with 156 photographs -- many of them never before published -- to vividly depict one major segment of this brigade's proud history during the Civil War.
