Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Cottage Garden Scattered throughout the length and breadth of Eng land, facmg dusty roadsides, hidden among the Shadows of quiet lanes, clinging to the Slopes of seaworn cliffs, skirting golden commons, are cottage gardens innumer able. Rarely are they ugly often they are pictures of sweetest charm and complete artistic fulfilment. Here is no straining after effect, no surrender to the dictates of passing fashion, no meaningless attempt to introduce into an environment utterly foreign to them, styles and mannerisms borrowed from other countries. Here we Shall seek in vain the Statuary and vases which, according so admirably with the Stately dignity of those memory haunted gardens of Italy, distort and make hideous the expensive gardens which certain architects have planned for English parvenus. Motives of economy, if not those of better feeling, have excluded from our wayside gardens the varnished huts with windows of stained glass, which, dignified as summer-houses, adorn a thousand suburban plots. The cheap conservatory is conspicuous by its absence; there are no ricketty chairs with Striped awnings, tawdry Japanese umbrellas or portable hammocks. In short, the average cottage garden is a garden, not a piece of ground littered with a medley of rubbish, which lacks even the merit of accomplishing the doubtful purpose for which it was intended. Put in water, will come out to perfection, lasting many times longer than any other summer flower. In the fall, bulbs may be taken up and stored away in a dry frost - free place; they are good for many years. The following collection contains the commercial varieties, now used by florists; in another list. Book excerpt: An elegant new edition of a classic book from one of the twentieth century's greatest garden writers. This landmark work on creating a garden was first published in 1956 and has rarely been out of print since. We Made a Garden is the story of how Margery Fish, one of the leading British gardeners of the mid-20th century, and her husband Walter transformed an acre of wilderness into a stunning cottage garden, still open to the public at East Lambrook Manor, Somerset, England. Quirky and readable, this book details her creation of a world-renowned cottage garden, as well as her battles with Walter in the process, who preferred the standard suburban approach. In this beautiful and timeless work, she recounts the trials and tribulations, the successes and failures of her venture with ease and humour. Topics covered are colourful and diverse, ranging from the most suitable hyssop for the terraced garden through composting, hedges and making paths to the best time to lift and replant tulip bulbs. This book has been hailed as everything from a blueprint for the creation of a modern cottage garden to a feminist manifesto, and the author's practical knowledge, imaginative ideas and general good sense will encourage and inspire gardeners everywhere.

Book excerpt: A celebration of a beloved and uniquely British garden style. The cottage garden's abundant, informal style is rooted in Victorian dreams of a perfect country life. But it has found new expressions from the Arts & Crafts movement to the present day. This book showcases a selection of National Trust cottage gardens, famous and obscure, including writer Thomas Hardy’s cottage in Dorset; the flower-filled cottage garden created at Sissinghurst, Kent, by Vita Sackville-West and harold Nicolson; the Tudor manor Cothele in Cornwall, Beatrix Potter's Cumbrian home, Hill Top, and the picturesque Alfriston Clergy House in East Sussex. Cottage Gardens also features some of the most famous non-National Trust examples from around the country, including Kelmscott Manor, Dove Cottage and Eastgrove Cottage Garden. With practical advice on creating your own cottage garden, including key plants and techniques, this is a wonderful companion for all garden enthusiasts. With climbing roses, bright hollyhocks, pathways edged with honeysuckle, blossom-filled orchards and wildflower meadows, this is the perfect book to capture the idyllic British country garden.
