Book excerpt: A rookie reporter, searching for his first big story, re-opens a murder case that once saw crowds of protestors surround Tbilisi's central police station... A piece of romantic graffiti chalked outside a new apartment block sends its residents into a social media frenzy, trying to identify the two lovers implicated by it.... A war-orphaned teenager looks after his dying sister in an abandoned railway carriage on the edge of town, hoping that someday soon the state will take care of them... In the 26 years since Georgia declared independence from the Soviet Union, the country and its capital, Tbilisi, have endured unimaginable hardships: one coup d'état, two wars with Russia, the cancer of organised crime, and prolonged periods of brutalising, economic depression. Now, as the city begins to flourish again – drawing hordes of tourists with its eclectic architecture and famous, welcoming spirit – it's difficult to reconcile the recent past with this glamorous and exotic present. With wit, warmth, heartbreaking realism, and a distinctly Georgian sense of neighbourliness, these ten stories do just that. 'Acts as an introduction to a literature quite neglected by the Anglophone world... the language consistently has the direct, clean and unadorned quality of great fiction.' – Luke Kennard. ‘A soaring, searing collection – important new stories that are sure to live long in the memory.’ – Eley Williams, author of Attrib. Published with the support of the Georgian National Book Center and the Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia.

Book excerpt: David Gorji (b. April 20, 1974), an American author, translator, traveler, and researcher of Caucasus Georgian descent, describes his quest to seek his ancestral roots where he discovers a gorgeous land called Georgia and its most hospitable inhabitants, the Georgians. Gorji's excitement at learning about his newly reclaimed homeland is evident in his fireside-like narration about this marvelous country, its rich history and culture, amazing heritage and millennia-old winemaking and feasting traditions. In this sequel to his inaugural book, "Georgian Gorgeous... or Gorgeous Georgians?" he focuses on Mtskheta and Tbilisi, Georgia's ancient and modern-day, though equally old, capitals, respectively. For dessert, the author, in the final chapter of the book, offers a detailed review of famed Georgian cuisine, the traditional supra festive table, along with relevant customs and traditions, ending with a description of some of this country's best wines.

Book excerpt: Georgia: The Land Below the Caucasus is history of the Black Sea kingdom from its entry into Western consciousness during the last centuries BC to the Soviet occupation of 1921. Situated between Europe and Asia, Georgia has been a stepchild of history. The nation, which adopted Christianity in 337, has survived Roman, Arab, Seljuk, Mongol, Timurid, Persian, Turkish and Russian invasions. Yet the heroic kings, generals, saints, martyrs, writers, poets, artists and craftsmen who have given Georgia a history rich in achievement and culture are little known. Georgia's historic cities, castles and cathedrals are seldom depicted and her towering mountain ranges, alpine valleys, and subtropical coast remain little known. This book reweaves Georgia's colorful and complex history into a narrative that gives due weight to leading figures and key events but also touches upon the underlying society of humbler souls and less dramatic forces. The narrative recounts Georgia's great struggle--against all odds--for national and cultural independence. The nation's rôle as a force in early Christianity, her embassies to the courts of the Mongol khans, to the Russian tsars, the monarchs of Europe, and to the popes are all presented. Georgia's wars with Persia, Turkey and Russia - particularly the annexation of 1801 - are covered, as is the impact of the Crimean and the First World War. The Georgian rôle as a Menshevik force in the Russian Revolution and the short-lived independent Democratic Republic of Georgia, 1918-21, are treated in lively detail. Eevents and action predominate, but without neglect of Georgia's rich legacy of scholarship, literature and poetry. In its 500 pages, Georgia: The Land Below the Caucasus draws upon not only the few established but often hard-to-find accounts but also introduces many hitherto unknown or neglected sources. The book includes 20 specially commissioned full-page, full-color maps, 24 color plates, 6 dynastic/chronological charts and over 100 b&w illustrations. Notes, a full bibliography and an extensive index add to the book's value as resource for scholars, general readers and visitors to and from Georgia.

Book excerpt: ". . . the best study in English to date for an understanding of Georgian nationalism." —Religious Studies Review ". . . the standard account of Georgian history in English." —American Historical Review ". . . tour de force research . . . fascinating reading." —American Political Science Review Like the other republics floating free after the demise of the Soviet empire, the independent republic of Georgia is reinventing its past, recovering what had been forgotten or distorted during the long years of Russian and Soviet rule. Whether Georgia can successfully be transformed from a society rent by conflict into a pluralistic democratic nation will depend on Georgians rethinking their history. This is the first comprehensive treatment of Georgian history, from the ethnogenesis of the Georgians in the first millennium B.C., through the period of Russian and Soviet rule in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, to the emergence of an independent republic in 1991, the ethnic and civil warfare that has ensued, and perspectives for Georgia's future.

Book excerpt: Reflecting on the deep and complex changes in Georgian politics over the last quarter of a century, this book highlights the domestic and international developments that have shaped Georgia as a state and society. Georgia: From Autocracy to Democracy covers a wide array of topics, including the economy, elections, judicial and educational systems, relations with the European Union, and Georgia’s interaction with its regional neighbours, including Russia, Turkey, and Iran. In the book, Georgian policy-makers, practitioners, and scholars who have worked in the administration, in the opposition, in the Third Sector, and in academia provide first-hand perspectives on Georgia’s political and economic life. They demonstrate exceptional insight into the extraordinary transformations in Georgia over the last twenty-five years, from the authoritarianism of President Zviad Gamsakhurdia, through the experience of civil war in the 1990s, to democracy today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When most of Eastern Europe was struggling with dictatorships of one kind or another, the Democratic Republic of Georgia (1918-1921) established a constitution, a parliamentary system with national elections, an active opposition, and a free press. Like the Democratic Republic of Georgia in 1918, its successors emerged after 1991 from a bankrupt empire, and faced, yet again, the task of establishing a new economic, political and social system from scratch. In both 1918 and 1991, Georgia was confronted with a hostile Russia and followed a pro-Western and pro-democratic course. The top regional experts in this book explore the domestic and external parallels between the Georgian post-colonial governments of the early twentieth and twenty-first centuries. How did the inexperienced Georgian leaders in both eras deal with the challenge of secessionism, what were their state building strategies, and what did democracy mean to them? What did their electoral systems look like, why were their economic strategies so different, and how did they negotiate with the international community neighbouring threats. These are the central challenges of transitional governments around the world today. Georgia’s experience over one hundred years suggests that both history and contemporary political analysis offer the best (and most interesting) explanation of the often ambivalent outcomes.
