Book Synopsis The Book of Spice by : John O'Connell
Download or read book The Book of Spice written by John O'Connell and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-07-12 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At once familiar and exotic, spices are rare things, comforting us in favorite dishes while evoking far-flung countries, Arabian souks, colonial conquests and vast fortunes. John O'Connell introduces us to spices and their unique properties, both medical and magical, alongside the fascinating histories behind both kitchen staples and esoteric luxuries. A tasty compendium of spices and a fascinating history and wide array of uses of the world’s favorite flavors—The Book of Spice: From Anise to Zedoary reveals the amazing history of spices both familiar and esoteric. John O’Connell’s erudite chapters combine history with insights into art, religion, medicine, science, and is richly seasoned with anecdotes and recipes. Discover why Cleopatra bathed in saffron and mare’s milk, why wormwood-laced absinthe caused eighteenth century drinkers to hallucinate and how cloves harvested in remote Indonesian islands found their way into a kitchen in ancient Syria. Almost every kitchen contains a bottle of cloves or a stick of cinnamon, almost every dish a pinch of something, whether chili or cumin. The Book of Spice is culinary history at its most appetizing.
Download or read book Spice written by Jack Turner and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2008-12-10 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this brilliant, engrossing work, Jack Turner explores an era—from ancient times through the Renaissance—when what we now consider common condiments were valued in gold and blood. Spices made sour medieval wines palatable, camouflaged the smell of corpses, and served as wedding night aphrodisiacs. Indispensible for cooking, medicine, worship, and the arts of love, they were thought to have magical properties and were so valuable that they were often kept under lock and key. For some, spices represented Paradise, for others, the road to perdition, but they were potent symbols of wealth and power, and the wish to possess them drove explorers to circumnavigate the globe—and even to savagery. Following spices across continents and through literature and mythology, Spice is a beguiling narrative about the surprisingly vast influence spices have had on human desire. Includes eight pages of color photographs. One of the Best Books of the Year: Discover Magazine, The Christian Science Monitor, San Francisco Chronicle

Book Synopsis The SPICE Book by : Andrei Vladimirescu
Download or read book The SPICE Book written by Andrei Vladimirescu and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1994 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book, written by Andre Vladimirescu, who was instrumental in the development of SPICE at the University of California Berkeley, introduces computer simulation of electrical and electronics circuits based on the SPICE standard. Relying on the functionality first supported in SPICE2 that is now supported in all SPICE programs, this text is addressed to all users of electrical simulation. The approach to learning circuit simulation is to interpret simulation results in relation to electrical engineering fundamentals; the book asks the student to solve most circuit examples by hand before verifying the results with SPICE. Addressed to both the SPICE novice and the experienced user, the first six chapters provide the relevant information on SPICE functionality for the analysis of linear as well as nonlinear circuits. Each of these chapters starts out with a linear example accessible to any new user of SPICE and proceeds with nonlinear transistor circuits. The latter part of the book goes into more detail on such issues as functional and hierarchical models, distortion analysis, basic algorithms in SPICE and related options parameters, and, how to direct SPICE to find a solution when it does not converge to a solution. The approach emphasizes that SPICE is not a substitute for knowledge of circuit operation but a complement. The SPICE Book is different from previously published books in the approach of solving circuit problems with a computer. The solution to most circuit examples is sketched out by hand first and followed by a SPICE verification. For more complex circuits it is not feasible to find the solution by hand but the approach stresses the need for the SPICE user tounderstand the results. Readers gain a better comprehension of SPICE thanks to the importance placed on the relation between EE fundamentals and computer simulation. The tutorial approach advances from the hand solution of a circuit to SPICE verification and simulation results interpretation. This book teaches the approach to electrical circuit simulation rather than a specific simulation program. Examples are simulated alternatively with SPICE2, SPICE3 or PSPICE. Accurate descriptions, simulation rationale and cogent explanations make this an invaluable reference.

Download or read book Handbook of Spices, Seasonings, and Flavorings, Second Edition written by Susheela Raghavan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-10-23 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An A to Z Catalog of Innovative Spices and Flavorings Designed to be a practical tool for the many diverse professionals who develop and market foods, the Handbook of Spices, Seasonings, and Flavorings combines technical information about spices—forms, varieties, properties, applications, and quality specifications — with information about trends, spice history, and the culture behind their cuisines. The book codifies the vast technical and culinary knowledge for the many professionals who develop and market foods. While many reference books on spices include alphabetized descriptions, the similarity between this book and others ends there. More than just a list of spices, this book covers each spice’s varieties, forms, and the chemical components that typify its flavor and color. The author includes a description of spice properties, both chemical and sensory, and the culinary information that will aid in product development. She also explains how each spice is used around the world, lists the popular global spice blends that contain the spice, describes each spice’s folklore and traditional medicine usage, and provides translations of each spice’s name in global languages. New to this edition is coverage of spice labeling and a chapter on commercial seasoning formulas. Going beyond the scope of most spice books, this reference describes ingredients found among the world’s cuisines that are essential in providing flavors, textures, colors, and nutritional value to foods. It explores how these ingredients are commonly used with spices to create authentic or new flavors. The author has created a complete reference book that includes traditionally popular spices and flavorings as well as those that are emerging in the US to create authentic or fusion products. Designed to help you meet the challenges and demands of today’s dynamic marketplace, this book is a complete guide to developing and marketing successful products.
