Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You don't have to be a child to appreciate the magic within The Book of Santa Claus. As author Vicky Howard notes, "We can never outgrow the anticipation of a visit from Santa Claus. He is a magical figure, drawn from the legends, history, and folklore of many countries."The legend of Santa Claus began in America in 1822 with Clement C. Moore's poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas." This enduring poem, which begins with the now-classic line "'Twas the night before Christmas," paints a vivid picture of St. Nick and his miniature sleigh pulled by eight tiny reindeer. Illustrated for the first time by Thomas Nast for Harper's Weekly in 1863, this famous depiction became an inspiration for much of the detailed Victorian art captured in The Book of Santa Claus. The rich compilation celebrates Santa Claus through the beautiful illustrations from century-old postcards from that era's preeminent commercial artists, such as Frances Brundage and Ellen Clapsaddle. Vicky Howard's personal collection of art from the "Golden Age of Postcards" is coupled with poems on the Christmas joy of Kris Kringle. This joyful miniature edition is perfect for a finishing touch to any gift basket, as a hostess gift, or for your own treasured keepsake.

Frank Baum Draw close to the fire, all you who believe in the spirit of Christmas, whether you call it Santa Claus, or simply good will to men; and listen to the story of Nicholas the Wandering Orphan who became Nicholas the Wood-carver, a lover of little children. Follow him through his first years as a lonely little boy, who had the knack of carving playthings for children; then as a young man, busy over the little toys; then as a prosperous, fat, rosy old man, who overcomes all sorts of difficulties in order to attain his ambition, a toy for every child in the village. Learn how he started to drive a beautiful sleigh drawn by prancing reindeer; why he first came down a chimney; how he filled the first stocking; where the first Christmas tree was decorated; and finally how he came to be known as "Saint Nicholas" and "Santa Claus." Book excerpt: The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus is a 1902 children's book written by Frank Baum. The story begins when Claus, as a baby, is found in the Forest of Burzee by Ak, the Master Woodsman of the World (a supreme immortal), and placed in the care of the lioness Shiegra; but thereupon adopted by the wood nymph, Necile. When he grows up, he moves from the Forest to the Laughing Valley, and becomes a toy maker. Every Christmas, with the help of magic beings, he distributes toys among children. The Awgwas, evil beings who can turn invisible, steal the toys that Claus is giving to the children, because the toys are preventing the children from misbehaving. The Awgwas nonetheless prevent so many of Claus's deliveries that Ak declares war upon them. The Awgwas are destroyed, and from that time on, Claus has no more obstacles to accomplish his mission, and earns the title "Santa" (Saint). Frank Baum (1856 - 1919) was an American author famous for his children's books, particularly The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its sequels.
