Book Synopsis Katie and the Kudzu King by : Stephen Scott
Download or read book Katie and the Kudzu King written by Stephen Scott and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Katie and the Kudzu King is about a little girl from New Jersey who visits her country cousins in Georgia. Leaving the airport, she spies the kudzu vines covering telephone poles, trees, bushes and everything else. The sight scares her because the scene resembles ghosts and grotesque creatures. Her cousins are amused by her fear and tease her, but later help her learn about this extraordinary vine. The book's theme is that the kudzu covering trees and bushes by southern highways looks startlingly like "monsters" waiting to cross the road, or perhaps to gobble up some unwary traveler. My own children saw many such monsters in the masses of kudzu, and we often played a travel game similar to seeing faces and objects in the clouds. Kudzu (Pueraria lobata) is a vine in the pea family that is ubiquitous in the South. It climbs, coils, spreads rapidly and generally covers everything in its path (telephone poles, bushes and trees and even whole buildings) if left unchecked. Although dormant during winters in the South, come Spring it revives and can grow a foot per day in the summer heat. It is native to southeast China and southern Japan and was brought to the United States in the late 1870's to use for cattle fodder and also for curbing erosion. Some animals (goats and llamas, for example) like it and other animals won't touch it. State highway departments in the South planted kudzu as roadside erosion control, but it quickly grew out of hand. Kudzu is almost impossible to eradicate. It can spread by seeds in the pods that form on the vine, or by vine stolons (runners) It is actually a pretty plant with a deep green color and has a beautiful purple flower reminiscent of wisteria.

He gets his chance to impress her after a strange spacecraft crashes in the woods. Along with the class science geek, Bobby Ray Dobbs, they discover that the crashed UFO holds an amazing key to the future. But who's going to believe a kid named Liar? Bob Schooley and Mark McCorkle (creators of the hit animated series Kim Possible) introduce a character with a fresh and distinctive voice in this very funny, pitch-perfect look at three unlikely friends who try to make a difference.

Book excerpt: Poetry. "Murray Shugars may find his 'lost apotheosis of absence' somewhere on the road between Michigan and Mississippi, or perhaps he may never find it at all. It doesn't matter: the record he leaves of his search are these charming, crafty poems, smartly probing into the everyday details of provincial life and turning magically into private rituals before our eyes. here is a poet who casually invites Garcia Lorca to stay with him in Vicksburg, who is on good terms with Lilith, and occasionally plays cards with God. these are poems to be savored like good bourbon, like Bill Evans at the piano. they are 'hazel and amaranth, cypress and madwort.' They're the real deal." Norman Finkelstein"

Book Synopsis The Ever-Shrinking Fighting Force by : Arnold Punaro
Download or read book The Ever-Shrinking Fighting Force written by Arnold Punaro and published by . This book was released on 2021-02 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Its capabilities unrivaled and its global reach unmatched, America's military is the envy of the world. Yet, to those in the know, like retired Marine Major General Arnold Punaro, a former Staff Director of the Senate Armed Services Committee, there is compelling need for improvement in its support elements. From the glacial pace of acquisitions to the spiraling growth of the defense agencies to the fully-burdened costs of the All-Volunteer Force, the Department of Defense's non-warfighting elements are not getting enough bang for the buck. Every recent Secretary of Defense has pushed business-minded reforms as a high priority, citing the need to convert overhead to warfighting capacity.Despite substantial increases in defense spending over the last decades, the number of warfighters is still declining. The Ever-Shrinking Fighting Force lays out, in clear and compelling detail, the major factors that contribute to this adverse trend that has outlasted efforts to reverse it by strong Defense Secretaries and even Presidents.Drawing on his half-century of experience in national security, Gen. Punaro offers a no-nonsense look at the inefficiencies that have plagued the Pentagon's creeping bureaucracy for decades. With calls for defense reform emanating from both the executive and legislative branches, this timely book provides a road map for thoughtful and balanced improvements.
Download or read book Redgunk Tales written by William R. Eakin and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in the town of Redgunk, Mississippi -- with a population of 400 people, a dog with black, smelly lips, and a mummy -- these interwoven stories owe as much to Sophocles as they do to Flannery O'Connor, exploring the human condition against a background of swamp gas and lawnmower fumes. Redgunk is a place where Otis Zebrowsky, cable repairman, can suddenly be sucked into a mythic world older than ancient Greece; and where intelligent women like Mina Thorton can find absolute happiness in the guise of a made-to-order alien mate. In these stories of ghosts, alien abductions, and genetic experiments gone awry, immersed in a setting singing with cicadas, crawling with kudzu, and as redneck as any in the South, characters live and breathe with genuine hearts.
