This book was released on 2019-09-12 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the doctrinal and ecclesiological trends that were present during the construction of the revised Book of Common Prayer of 1927. Through the use of the records of both Convocations and of the National/Church Assembly, it examines the debates that led to the revised Book and the doctrinal shifts that were present in these debates. It challenges the idea that the revision process stalled in the First World War by showing how the birth of the National Assembly that took place during the war was born out of the revision process. Through the Assembly records it shows the integral role the laity played in the revision process. It examines the attempts to get the revised Books through Parliament, the difference between pro and anti-revision speakers, and the radical ecclesiological thinking that followed the rejections.

Book Synopsis Issues in Prayer Book Revision by : Robert W. Prichard
Download or read book Issues in Prayer Book Revision written by Robert W. Prichard and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-10-17 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays from academics across a spectrum of perspectives. The Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music sought input from multiple sources in order to better understand the charge of the General Convention of 2015 suggesting that it present a plan for the revision of the Book of Common Prayer to the 2018 Convention. While the individual chapters of this volume raise a variety of differing issues, they share a common assumption—that one of the sources of information for the Standing Commission and the Church in its deliberations ought to be the community of academically trained liturgical scholars. The hope of this volume is to open a conversation across the church that will continue in the future.
Book Synopsis The Book of Common Prayer by : Alan Jacobs
Download or read book The Book of Common Prayer written by Alan Jacobs and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "While many of us are familiar with such famous words as, "Dearly beloved, we are gathered together here." or "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust," we may not know that they originated with The Book of Common Prayer, which first appeared in 1549. Like the words of the King James Bible and Shakespeare, the language of this prayer book has saturated English culture and letters. Here Alan Jacobs tells its story. Jacobs shows how The Book of Common Prayer--from its beginnings as a means of social and political control in the England of Henry VIII to its worldwide presence today--became a venerable work whose cadences express the heart of religious life for many. The book's chief maker, Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury, created it as the authoritative manual of Christian worship throughout England. But as Jacobs recounts, the book has had a variable and dramatic career in the complicated history of English church politics, and has been the focus of celebrations, protests, and even jail terms. As time passed, new forms of the book were made to suit the many English-speaking nations: first in Scotland, then in the new United States, and eventually wherever the British Empire extended its arm. Over time, Cranmer's book was adapted for different preferences and purposes. Jacobs vividly demonstrates how one book became many--and how it has shaped the devotional lives of men and women across the globe"--.

Book Synopsis The Legal History of the Church of England by : Norman Doe
Download or read book The Legal History of the Church of England written by Norman Doe and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-02-22 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first comprehensive analysis of the principal legal landmarks in the evolution of the law of the established Church of England from the Reformation to the present day. It explores the foundations of ecclesiastical law and considers its crucial role in the development of the Church of England over the centuries. The law has often been the site of major political and theological controversies, within and outside the church, including the Reformation itself, the English civil war, the Restoration and rise of religious toleration, the impact of the industrial revolution, the ritualist disputes of the 19th century, and the rise of secularisation in the twentieth. The book examines key statutes, canons, case-law, and other instruments in fields such as church governance and ministry, doctrine and liturgy, rites of passage (from baptism to burial) and church property. Each chapter studies a broadly 50-year period, analysing it in terms of continuity and change, explaining the laws by reference to politics and theology, and evaluating the significance of the legal landmarks for the development of church law and its place in wider English society.
Book Synopsis The Real Jesus Myth by : Rev. Bill Musselwhite
Download or read book The Real Jesus Myth written by Rev. Bill Musselwhite and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2013-12-13 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Real Jesus Myth is what happens when a retired (but still cynical) journalist, who is also a retired (but still cynical) Anglican priest, decides to answer some of the questions tossed at him about the Christian Faith. Many people don’t know enough about the nuts and bolts of Christian belief – “doctrine” to use an unpopular word. This isn’t their fault: most mainline churches put “social justice” issues front and centre while doctrine, evangelism and apologetics gather dust in the rear pews. This may be one reason so many mainline churches are scrambling to stay afloat and, if so, why it’s long past time to re-emphasize the fundamentals of the Faith. The Real Jesus Myth is a (fairly) orthodox look at the Christian Faith centered around the Nicene Creed and bookended by comments on everything from why the bible is God’s word to why orthodoxy isn’t as scary as you may think. It is written both for Christians and for the curious non-Christian but one caution – the author is an ex columnist and police reporter, not a theologian, so don’t expect this to read like a textbook.
Book Synopsis Go Forth, Christian Soul by : John Stuart Lampard
Download or read book Go Forth, Christian Soul written by John Stuart Lampard and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-01-21 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prayer "Go forth Christian Soul, on your journey from this world" has supported generations of Christians in the moments of their dying. In this original biography of the prayer known as the Proficiscere the author traces the history of this well-known text from its origins in eighth-century France to the present day. During 1,200 years of biography we meet an extraordinary range of people whose lives have affected or interacted with the life of the prayer. These include Thomas Cranmer, William Caxton, Cardinal Newman, General Gordon of Khartoum, Edward Elgar, and Cardinal Basil Hume. Versions of this famous prayer have found their way into contemporary funeral liturgies. The author draws on liturgical scholarship history and not least his own experiences as a minister to the dying. At the end of this biography you will never look on your own dying, or that of others around you, as you have before. You will be better prepared, at your death, to hear the words "Go forth Christian Soul."
