Book excerpt: The first time Pierce Brosnan went to the cinema, aged 11, he watched a James Bond film. At the age of 27, he married a James Bond girl. He had the chance of playing James Bond himself at the age of 33 but lost the role due to contractual obligations. He was 41 when he was formally announced as the fifth actor to play James Bond on June 8, 1994, playing the role for a decade in four productions and three original video games. One could say that it was written that at some point of his life Brosnan would play Ian Fleming's secret agent, and this happened during a particular time where the world was going through many cultural, technological and political changes. This book offers an in-depth look to the era that took the franchise to new heights from the 1990s to the first years of the new millennium, remarking the importance that Pierce Brosnan's portrayal of James Bond has had to guarantee the continued success of 007 into the 21st century.

Book excerpt: 'Jackals howled dismally, foraging for bones and offal down in the khud below the butcher's shop. Pasand was unperturbed by the sound...' Nowadays, we are often assured by the cool touch of technology when confronted with fear. Help is just a call away. But the creatures of the dark await in the shadows, laughing at our foolishness, for their powers transcend those of man's modern gadgets. Could Pasand, a man of the millennium, ever think that his cell phone would be of no help as he is caught in the clutches of the family in the graveyard? Could Harley Warren, a researcher of forbidden subjects, ever imagine that the telephone he was using to keep in touch with his friend as he explored the dark depths of a sepulchre would be useless in the face of danger? These and other elements of the night find place in this book compiled by India's favourite author, Ruskin Bond. Comprising stories by Rudyard Kipling, H.H. Munro, Bram Stoker and others, Night of the Millennium will chill you to the bone!

Alliances have been forged, wars have been waged. When Iris Porter first arrives in the quadrant and meets two bounty hunters - Captain Kansas Smith and Lieutenant Lewis Auznarr - nothing could have prepared her for what was in store. Kansas's people, the eldevians, have been fighting a war for over 400 years with no end in sight until a man appears, claiming to have the codes that could bring down the eldevian defense system and allow their enemies to invade. Kansas, Lewis, and Iris are then in a race against time to stop the codes from falling into the enemy's hands all the while being chased relentlessly by a notorious group of mercenaries, the Black Hawks. Even with an end now in sight for the war, there seems to be something else lurking on the horizon. Something far greater and far more dangerous than anyone could have ever imagined.

By following some ancient words on hope, Wright outlines a practical way for creating a better world as we move into the coming age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Bond. James Bond.” Since Sean Connery first uttered that iconic phrase in Dr. No, more than one quarter of the world’s population has seen a 007 film. Witty and urbane, Bond seduces and kills with equal ease — often, it seems, with equal enthusiasm. This enthusiasm, coupled with his freedom to do what is forbidden to everyone else, evokes fascinating philosophical questions. Here, 15 witty, thought-provoking essays discuss hidden issues in Bond’s world, from his carnal pleasures to his license to kill. Among the lively topics explored are Bond’s relation to existentialism, including his graduation “beyond good and evil”; his objectification of women; the paradox of breaking the law in order to ultimately uphold it like any “stupid policeman”; the personality of 007 in terms of Plato’s moral psychology; and the Hegelian quest for recognition evinced by Bond villains. A reference guide to all the Bond movies rounds out the book’s many pleasures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Millenium Primer for Elected Municipal Officials is the natural product of twenty years of public service and living and working in the political maelstrom called small town politics. Matthew Bonnet takes each of the normal operational divisions of the typical municipality and explores its deepest recesses. He searches for the humor and irony found in each area, but at the same time he exposes its weaknesses and strengths. Bonnet exaggerates and overstates, but he does not lie. As ridiculous as some of his examples and anecdotes may seem, they are true. Sad. But true. Many good men and women serve their communities as elected officials for several years without having a clue as to some of the things Bonnet exposes in this Primer. There are no sacred cows left standing when Bonnet leaves the room. Civil Service, City Attorneys, Fire Departments, State regulators and inspectors, Congressmen, and even the Great Generation, all fall prey to his pen. Those who know Bonnet understand that his sarcasm and honesty is tempered with love and respect for those with whom he has spent most of his life working. But that does not buy them a free pass from the scrutiny of the dreaded Primer.

This book offers the first in-depth examination of contemporary Shanghai-based art and design - from state-sponsored exhibitions to fashionable cultural complexes to cutting edge films and installations. Informed by years of in-situ research, the book looks beyond contemporary art's global hype to reveal the socio-political tensions accompanying Shanghai's transitions from semi-colonial capitalism to Maoist socialism to Communist Party-sponsored capitalism. Case studies reveal how Shanghai's global aesthetic constructs glamorising artifices that mask the conflicts between vying notions of foreign-influenced modernity and anti-colonialist nationalism, as well as the city's repressed socialist past and its consumerist present.

Book excerpt: "This book is not a blind defence to 'Die Another Day'. This is not even a tribute to the 20th James Bond film or a subjective appreciation of it. This is just a book that intends to give a second look to a film that is ranked quite low in the list of filmgoers or 007 fans". With these words, author Nicolás Suszczyk ('The World of GoldenEye', 'The Bond of The Millennium') begins to assess the fourth and final James Bond film starring Pierce Brosnan and released in November 2002 as the series reached its ruby anniversary, also taking into account the sociocultural context of the early days of the new millennium in an era divided between the fear of terrorism and the leisure provided by new forms of technology. 'Beyond The Ice' deconstructs 'Die Another Day' as no book has done before and explains why there is more to Bond 20 than an invisible Aston Martin Vanquish and 007 surfing a computer-generated tsunami.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2000 United Nations adopted the Millennium Development Goals (UN MDGs), committing the member nations to a new global partnership to reduce extreme poverty and setting out a series of specific targets with a deadline of 2015. Related to the UN MDGs, tourism is increasingly seen as a promising tool for poverty reduction, ensuring environmental sustainability and developing a global partnership for development, for example. Thus, the industry has become an important policy tool for community and regional development in many developing countries and the expectations for tourism and its social and economic outcomes have evolved to a high level. However, there are still many challenges to overcome in the relationship between tourism industry, development and poverty reduction. This book aims to discuss the promises, challenges and outcomes of tourism in development with a specific aim of drawing together research related to tourism and UN MDGs. The papers discuss what lessons can be learnt and conclusions drawn from the utilisation of tourism for development and poverty reduction. What emerges from this collection is a set of interesting results and notions which both support and challenge the connections between tourism and development and the new role of tourism in global development. This book is an extended version of a special issue published in Current Issues in Tourism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Civil War era, Americans nearly unanimously accepted that humans battled in a cosmic contest between good and evil and that God was directing history toward its end. The concept of God's Providence and of millennialism -- Christian anticipations of the end of the world -- dominated religious thought in the nineteenth century. During the tumultuous years immediately prior to, during, and after the war, these ideas took on a greater importance as Americans struggled with the unprecedented destruction and promise of the period. Scholars of religion, literary critics, and especially historians have acknowledged the presence of apocalyptic thought in the era, but until now, few studies have taken the topic as their central focus or examined it from the antebellum period through Reconstruction. By doing so, the essays in Apocalypse and the Millennium in the American Civil War Era highlight the diverse ways in which beliefs about the end times influenced nineteenth-century American lives, including reform culture, the search for meaning amid the trials of war, and the social transformation wrought by emancipation. Millennial zeal infused the labor of reformers and explained their successes and failures as progress toward an imminent Kingdom of God. Men and women in the North and South looked to Providence to explain the causes and consequences of both victory and defeat, and Americans, black and white, experienced the shock waves of emancipation as either a long-prophesied jubilee or a vengeful punishment. Religion fostered division as well as union, the essays suggest, but while the nation tore itself apart and tentatively stitched itself back together, Americans continued looking to divine intervention to make meaning of the national apocalypse.
