Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ballad of the White Horse is a poem by G. K. Chesterton about the idealized exploits of the Saxon King Alfred the Great. Written in ballad form, the work is usually considered one of the last great traditional epic poems ever written in the English language. The poem narrates how Alfred was able to defeat the invading Danes at the Battle of Ethandun under the auspices of God working through the agency of the Virgin Mary. In addition to being a narration of Alfred's military and political accomplishments, it is also considered a Catholic allegory. Chesterton incorporates a significant amount of philosophy into the basic structure of the story. Aeterna Press

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a fully annotated translation of an early nineteenth-century encyclopedia, the Kyuhap ch’ongsŏ (The Encyclopedia of Daily Life). Written by Lady Yi (1759–1824) as a household management aid for her daughters and daughters-in-law, the work is a treasure trove of information on how women of higher status in the late Chosŏn (1392–1910) ran their households and conducted their daily lives. The encyclopedia opens with lengthy sections on making beverages and brewing a wide array of liquors (as well as remedies for the overconsumption of alcohol) and contains dozens of recipes for dishes ranging from numerous types of kimch’i to confections and rice cakes. The second part of the translation concerns prenatal care, childbirth, childrearing, and first aid for a large number of afflictions and medical conditions. An extensive introduction will help readers understand the times in which Lady Yi wrote her encyclopedia and the influences that fostered her love of scholarship. The work demonstrates the full sweep of her authority in the domestic sphere and the many aspects of day-to-day life that women needed to prepare for and manage. Her mastery of East Asian cosmology comes across clearly in her use of this knowledge to account for the workings of the world, the processes required to take care of one’s body, and interactions between humans and the natural world. The Encyclopedia of Daily Life will be an important reference for those studying medicine, botany, and the preparation of foodstuffs in premodern East Asian societies. It will also be a valuable linguistic reference to the Korean language during the late Chosŏn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DEATH RODE A WHITE HORSE starts with the Creation story only Lucifer is a playboy who does back flips off the high dive. Creator is a little forgetful and leaves scalpels in some of his creations. Some of his creations have to be destroyed before their waste pollutes the earth, but when he creates Adam, his creation is perfect until Eve and Lucifer screw the whole thing up. Adam and Eve are driven out of the Garden of Eden before they give birth to Cain and Able. By the way, when Cain is born, Creator has to rest up by going fishing. As you can see, the characters in this novel are humorous, pathetic, and sometimes downright human like you and me. While Adam and Eve and their son, Cain, tends the farm, Able takes his animals to warmer climes in the winter and cooler places in the summer. While in the Kargos Mountains, Able rescues a princess and marries her. Fixed up with a nice wife, his life is idyllic until his mother-in-law sticks her nose into the story. In a short time Cain gets the hots for the queen and all hell breaks loose! You must read the book to find out why jealousy drives Cain to kill his brother, Able. By the way, the ending should run chills up your spine. To add to the excitement Creator and Gabriel fly through the air in a chariot throwing lightning bolts at poor old Lucifer. If you read this, the Bible should never be a dull book again.

Book excerpt: How did Tiffany, George Rodrigue's beloved pet, become the Blue Dog? What secrets lie behind her soulful golden eyes? And why has this tale about a dog, her master, and his paintings inspired millions? STC's long-awaited reprint of Rodrigue's original Blue Dog book reveals the answers.Through vibrant paintings, Rodrigue dramatizes Tiffany's transformation from a frisky -- and white-furred -- terrier/spaniel to Blue Dog. In the process, he illustrates the back and forth of both man and beast as they strive for true communication -- a level of understanding that goes far beyond their differences. The text gives voice to Tiffany as well as George, and the terrier/spaniel's sharp, sophisticated sense of humor provides a completely unique perspective on the nature of love, art, and human behavior. Joyous and moving, Blue Dog is a must for any fan of Rodrigue's sublime canine companion. Copyright © Libri GmbH. All rights reserved.

Each chapter unravels the fading tapestry of walled towns, castles, churches, mansions, and quaint cottages. Yet, the book dives deeper, exploring the erosion of customs, fairs, historic documents, and the very essence of English scenery. Experience the nostalgia and embrace the timeless allure of a vanished England in this evocative masterpiece.
