Book Synopsis Blessed with Tourists by : Thomas S. Bremer
Download or read book Blessed with Tourists written by Thomas S. Bremer and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2006-03-08 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a million tourists visit religious landmarks in San Antonio, Texas, each year, observing and sometimes participating in religious activities there. The San Antonio Missions National Historical Park--managed by the National Park Service, in cooperation with the Catholic Church--is one of hundreds of religious places in America and around the world where tourists have become a familiar presence. In Blessed with Tourists, Thomas S. Bremer explores the intersection of tourism and commerce with religion in American, using the missions and other San Antonio sites as prime examples. Bremer recounts the history of San Antonio, from its Native American roots to its development as a religious center with the growth of the Spanish colonial missions, to the modern transformation of San Antonio into a tourist destination. Employing both ethnographic and historical approaches, Bremer examines the concepts of place, identity, aesthetics, and commercialization, demonstrating numerous ways that modern market forces affect religious communities. By identifying important connections between religious and touristic practices, Bremer establishes San Antonio as a distinctive source for anyone seeking to understand the interplay between the religious and the secular, the traditional and the modern.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behind all myths there is one message, a timeless truth that mystic traditions point to: our Earthly lives are a preparation for life as Starwalkers, advanced, interdimensional beings, who travel the Dimension of the Blessed. In this comprehensive study, the first-ever of its kind, William Henry reconstructs the ancient beliefs in this Dimension from clues from Egypt to Sumeria to Greece to America. When pieced together, these myths create an adventure to a realm of incredible possibility. A few of the enigmas this book explores are: The Egyptian belief that interdimensional beings of light created humanity; The meaning behind the ‘reed,’ the key term constantly repeated over thousands of years in these global myths; How Moses’ parting of the Sea of Reeds while leading the Israelites to Canaan, the Place of Reeds, is an allegory for the opening of a gate to another realm; The secret meaning behind Jesus performing his first miracle at Cana, which means reed, and the tearing open of the heavens at his baptism and crucifixion; How the human body is capable of producing a spiritual substance that is made of space-time and through which one can see other times and places; How the study of other dimensions can affect our biology and will change our lives in the near future. Chapters include: A Cosmic Species; The Dimension of the Blessed; The Field; Up Out of Egypt; The Blessed Falcons; The Divine Spark of the Blessed; Atlantis: The Blessed Land; The Sea at the End of the World; Manna and the Blessed Realm; Blessed Sirius; Gilgamesh & Sirius; Tearing Open the Dimension of the Blessed; Judas and the Dimension of the Blessed; more.

Those types of experiences are part of the human journey. But when we find ourselves in such a place, it's important that we keep a positive perspective. If we will go through the dark place in the valley trusting, believing, and knowing that God is still in control, we will come to the table that is already prepared for us, where our cup runs over.

Book Synopsis Representations of the Afterlife in Luke-Acts by : Alexey Somov
Download or read book Representations of the Afterlife in Luke-Acts written by Alexey Somov and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-09 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questions regarding the afterlife are many, and the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts pay a great deal of attention to them: why does Luke speak about several different forms of the afterlife? Why is resurrection described as a person's transformation into an angelic being? How many abodes are appointed for the righteous and the wicked after death? Alexey Somov addresses these queries in relation to the apparent confusion and variety found in the text, and in respect of the interrelatedness of these issues, and their connection with other eschatological issues in Luke-Acts, and in relation to the wider cultural context of the Mediterranean world to which Luke belonged. Every culture expresses its beliefs by means of special metaphors that allow it to comprehend supernatural realities in terms of everyday experience. Belief in the afterlife was part of this metaphorical system which Luke shared with the ancient eastern Mediterranean culture. Somov takes his analysis one step further by applying Cognitive Metaphor Theory to selected metaphorical aspects of the afterlife. While the inconsistencies and incoherence of the combined metaphors may seem jarring to a contemporary Western reader, Somov's reading enables a recognition of the specific religious metaphors used, which for Luke would have been current and widely accepted.

Book Synopsis Liturgical Theology after Schmemann by : Brian A. Butcher
Download or read book Liturgical Theology after Schmemann written by Brian A. Butcher and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While only rarely reflecting explicitly on liturgy, French philosopher Paul Ricoeur (1913-2005) gave sustained attention to several themes pertinent to the interpretation of worship, including metaphor, narrative, subjectivity, and memory. Inspired by his well-known aphorism, “The symbol gives rise to thought,” Liturgical Theology after Schmemann offers an original exploration of the symbolic world of the Byzantine Rite , culminating in a Ricoeurian analysis of its Theophany “Great Blessing of Water.” . The book examines two fundamental questions: 1) what are the implications of the philosopher’s oeuvre for liturgical theology at large? And 2)how does the adoption of a Ricoeurian hermeneutic shape the study of a particular rite? Taking the seminal legacy of Orthodox theologian Alexander Schmemann (1921-1983) as its point of departure, Butcher contributes to the renewal of contemporary Eastern Christian thought and ritual practice by engaging a spectrum of current theological and philosophical conversations.
