Book excerpt: Prior to the mid-sixties, Grayville, TN was one of twenty-four "sundown towns." A "sundown town" was a town that had a sign on the outskirts of town that said, "Negros are not allowed in the city limits after sundown." Very few blacks lived in Grayville. Grayville High School seldom had black students. In August of 2020, a black doctor moved to Grayville. He moved from Weston, Ohio to be near his adopting white parents who lived in the Homeland Retirement Center in Pleasant Hill. Grayville never had a black basketball player, now it has three. The doctor has three sons. Joseph is a 6' 9" senior and his twin brothers, Samuel and David both 6' 6" juniors. The three brothers took Weston to the Ohio State basketball championship. Book excerpt: Prior to the mid-sixties, Grayville, TN, was one of twenty-four 'sundown towns.' A 'sundown town' was a town that had a sign on the outskirts stating, 'Negros are not allowed in the city limits after sundown.' Very few Black individuals lived in Grayville, and the high school rarely had Black students. In August of 2020, a Black doctor relocated to Grayville from Weston, Ohio, to be near his adoptive white parents residing in the Homeland Retirement Center in Pleasant Hill. Book excerpt: In June of 1940, when Paris fell to the Nazis, Hitler spent a total of three hours in the City of Light—abruptly leaving, never to return. To this day, no one knows why. Kate Rees, a young American markswoman, has been recruited by British intelligence to drop into Paris with a dangerous assignment: assassinate the Führer. Wrecked by grief after a Luftwaffe bombing killed her husband and infant daughter, she is armed with a rifle, a vendetta, and a fierce resolve. But other than rushed and rudimentary instruction, she has no formal spy training. Thrust into the red-hot center of the war, a country girl from rural Oregon finds herself holding the fate of the world in her hands. When Kate misses her mark and the plan unravels, Kate is on the run for her life—all the time wrestling with the suspicion that the whole operation was a set-up. New York Times bestselling author Cara Black is at her best as she brings Occupation-era France to vivid life in this masterful, pulse-pounding story about one young woman with the temerity—and drive—to take on Hitler himself. *Features an illustrated map of 1940s Paris as full color endpapers.

In a volume of ten stories, Earnest Bracey shares insight into the lives of diverse characters often uplifted by rhythm and blues music while facing terrible domestic situations, death, and racism in a harsh and complex world. David Moore, the Reverend Anthony Jones, and Randall Smith are all battling internal demons when they are committed to the same mental hospital and form an alliance. While growing up in Louisiana, Jason Little is labeled a sissy by the neighborhood Black boys. But what no one knows is that he has gifted fingers. Betty Brown has the voice of an angel. As she transforms into a fabulous gospel singer, Betty must harbor a horrifying secret that ultimately robs her of her voice. The Big Black Three and Other Short Stories is a collection of candid, sometimes haunting tales that address the suffering, struggles, and other deprivations of African Americans.

Du Bois was a public intellectual, sociologist, and activist on behalf of the African American community. He profoundly shaped black political culture in the United States through his founding role in the NAACP, as well as internationally through the Pan-African movement. Du Bois'ssociological and historical research on African-American communities and culture broke ground in many areas, including the history of the post-Civil War Reconstruction period. Du Bois was also a prolific author of novels, autobiographical accounts, innumerable editorials and journalistic pieces, andseveral works of history.Du Bois called his epic Black Flame trilogy a fiction of interpretation. It acts as a representative biography of African American history by following one man, Manuel Mansart, from his birth in 1876 until his death. The Black Flame attempts to use this historical fiction of interpretation to recastand revisit the African American experience. Readers will appreciate The Black Flame trilogy as a clear articulation of Du Bois's perspective at the end of his life. The last book in this profound trilogy, Worlds of Color, opens when Mansart is sixty and a successful and established college president. Packed with political intrigue, romance, and social commentary, the book provides a dark, cynical view of the world and its relationship to the "Black Flame," orthe potential of black civilization. Building upon the drama of the previous two books, Worlds of Color delves into a more sinister, bleak, and doubtful future. With a series introduction by editor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and an introduction by Brent Hayes Edwards, this edition is essential foranyone interested in African American literature.

Book excerpt: Three extraordinary and impassioned nonfiction works by Richard Wright, one of America's premier literary giants of the twentieth century, together in one volume, with an introduction by Cornel West. “The time is ripe to return to [Wright’s] vision and voice in the face of our contemporary catastrophes and hearken to his relentless commitment to freedom and justice for all.” — Cornel West (from the Introduction) Black Power: A Record of Reactions in a Land of Pathos is Richard Wright’s chronicle of his trip to Africa’s Gold Coast before it became the free nation of Ghana. It speaks eloquently of empowerment and possibility, freedom and hope, and resonates loudly to this day. The Color Curtain: A Report on the Bandung Conference is a vital piece arguing for the removal of the color barrier and remains one of the key commentaries on the question of race in the modern era. “Truth-telling will perhaps always be unpopular and suspect, but in The Color Curtain . . . Wright did not hesitate to tell the truth as he saw it” (Amritjit Singh, Ohio University). White Man, Listen! is a stirring assortment of Wright’s essays on race, politics, and other social concerns close to his heart. It remains a work that “deserves to be read with utmost seriousness, for the attitude it expresses has an intrinsic importance in our times” (New York Times).
