Book excerpt: Life lessons from single mothers throughout history form the inspiration for single mothers today. Single moms are not just a product of our modern culture. There have been single mothers throughout history, women who have raised not only their children but also nations with a higher vision for life. Holding Her Head High recounts stories of twelve such women from the third to the twenty-first centuries, women who found ways to twist their fates to represent God's destiny for their lives. These uniquely powerful, brave women, within the scope of their own world and times, are like the ninety-nine percent of single mothers today who never intended to carry that distinction. They are abandoned, widowed, or divorced, all carrying wounds, yet they also all found ways to exhibit courage, kindness, dignity, and faith to heal themselves by healing others. Actress Janine Turner, herself a single mother, describes the social implications for women and children from the Roman Empire through the Middle Ages to Pioneer days, including a single mother of slavery. Stories from women like Rachel Lavein Fawcett, abandoned single mother of Alexander Hamilton; Abagail Adams, a wartime widow; Harriet Jacobs, an unwed mother of slavery whose autobiography was published the year the Civil War began; and widowed Belva Lockwood, the first woman to officially run for President, all carrying wounds but all offering insight, wisdom, and encouragement. Lessons include: Listen for God's higher calling Hold your head high Dare to dream Champion your children Heal with humor Don't Give Up Before the Miracle

Lewis, have taken this as a goal to bring it out to the world. I started writing Single Mother’s in 2007. I had many roadblocks. But God put this project on me and has seen me through it. This book contains some facts and mostly my opinion on the subject. Since I was a black boy raised by a single mother, I feel I have quite a bit of insight to offer. I am a black man in the trenches every day, and my various jobs expose me to the everyday life of young black boys and young black men. I hope you, the reader, will get something out of this guide that will help you and your son then I have done my job. Keep the faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonwhite and white, rich and poor, born to an unwed mother or weathering divorce, over half of all children in the current generation will live in a single-parent family--and these children simply will not fare as well as their peers who live with both parents. This is the clear and urgent message of this powerful book. Based on four national surveys and drawing on more than a decade of research, Growing Up with a Single Parent sharply demonstrates the connection between family structure and a child's prospects for success. What are the chances that the child of a single parent will graduate from high school, go on to college, find and keep a job? Will she become a teenage mother? Will he be out of school and out of work? These are the questions the authors pursue across the spectrum of race, gender, and class. Children whose parents live apart, the authors find, are twice as likely to drop out of high school as those in two-parent families, one and a half times as likely to be idle in young adulthood, twice as likely to become single parents themselves. This study shows how divorce--particularly an attendant drop in income, parental involvement, and access to community resources--diminishes children's chances for well-being. The authors provide answers to other practical questions that many single parents may ask: Does the gender of the child or the custodial parent affect these outcomes? Does having a stepparent, a grandmother, or a nonmarital partner in the household help or hurt? Do children who stay in the same community after divorce fare better? Their data reveal that some of the advantages often associated with being white are really a function of family structure, and that some of the advantages associated with having educated parents evaporate when those parents separate. In a concluding chapter, McLanahan and Sandefur offer clear recommendations for rethinking our current policies. Single parents are here to stay, and their worsening situation is tearing at the fabric of our society. It is imperative, the authors show, that we shift more of the costs of raising children from mothers to fathers and from parents to society at large. Likewise, we must develop universal assistance programs that benefit low-income two-parent families as well as single mothers. Startling in its findings and trenchant in its analysis, Growing Up with a Single Parent will serve to inform both the personal decisions and governmental policies that affect our children's--and our nation's--future.

Book excerpt: "A Single Mom's Guide to Raising Black (Gentle) Men" is an impactful book that shows you how to persevere and ultimately raise young men who are confident, accountable, and capable of facing whatever life throws at them. Throughout her book, author Sanya Simmons dives deeply into the real issues single moms face when raising Black sons. Full of practical tips and real-life examples, this book addresses a wide range of topics. This includes the role a mom plays in raising a man, educational challenges and stereotypes, talking to your son about sex, sexual orientation and gender identity, balancing parenting with your own needs, and much more. Written by a single mom for single moms, this is an authentic, matter of fact, and necessary book for women raising sons of all ages. When Sanya began her journey as a single mom of boys, she looked everywhere for books that would share practical advice on how to raise her Black sons into men. Unfortunately, the only books she found were written by men and came from an academic - and even clinical perspective. A father cannot be replaced, but a loving mother has the power to raise her son to be a man. For Sanya, giving up was never an option. So, she was guided each step of the way by her personal values and parenting philosophies. These philosophies were grounded in unconditional love and honesty. Despite some struggle, she managed to raise strong and confident young men. This book came into existence because she realized that she has wisdom to share. This is wisdom that can help other single moms with their parenting experience. Follow along to learn, grow, and become the mother that your son needs!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding of single mothers is broken. Not like, "The x-ray came back and you may need a cast", broken; but, "It's time to evacuate. The levy has been demolished," broken.Mentally, our streets are flooded with ignorance, yet we simply paddle along as if this is the way things are going to be. All things common sense seem to be immersed under the murky waters of, "She should've known better," "She should've been married first," and "It's her fault he ran out. She's the one who chose him." It's bizarre that in a world where cars can drive themselves and phones can recognize thumb prints, we're still committed to such ignorance, but that's about to change. For the last few years I've posted articles, memes, poems, and even viral videos with tens of millions of views on this subject, but like sandbags to an ocean, they've gotten swallowed whole without us, as a society, moving forward one inch. So, I've decided to take things up a notch with Single Mothers are for Grown Men, ONLY! and drain the preconceived notions, biases, and stereotypes once and for all, particularly as they pertain to dating and relationships. This is not some pity-ridden manual about how single moms should feel sorry for themselves. They have nothing to feel sorry about. In fact, they should be feeling the exact opposite if despite what they have to put up with, they're still able to hold their heads up and put one foot in front of the other. This is 130 pages of facts, analogies, and practical examples of how single mothers have been framed for moral crimes they've never committed, and underappreciated for the should-be obvious positive qualities they possess. It's time for a perspective adjustment. If you agree, then you've found the right book. If you don't, then challenge me to change your mind, and yes, I accept.

Book excerpt: Named one of 10 Best New Management Books for 2022 by Thinkers50 A Wall Street Journal Bestseller "...this guide provides readers with much more than just early careers advice; it can help everyone from interns to CEOs." — a Financial Times top title You've landed a job. Now what? No one tells you how to navigate your first day in a new role. No one tells you how to take ownership, manage expectations, or handle workplace politics. No one tells you how to get promoted. The answers to these professional unknowns lie in the unspoken rules—the certain ways of doing things that managers expect but don't explain and that top performers do but don't realize. The problem is, these rules aren't taught in school. Instead, they get passed down over dinner or from mentor to mentee, making for an unlevel playing field, with the insiders getting ahead and the outsiders stumbling along through trial and error. Until now. In this practical guide, Gorick Ng, a first-generation college student and Harvard career adviser, demystifies the unspoken rules of work. Ng distills the wisdom he has gathered from over five hundred interviews with professionals across industries and job types about the biggest mistakes people make at work. Loaded with frameworks, checklists, and talking points, the book provides concrete strategies you can apply immediately to your own situation and will help you navigate inevitable questions, such as: How do I manage my time in the face of conflicting priorities? How do I build relationships when I’m working remotely? How do I ask for help without looking incompetent or lazy? The Unspoken Rules is the only book you need to perform your best, stand out from your peers, and set yourself up for a fulfilling career.

Author Brandynicole Brooks addresses intersectionality and ideological, institutional, interpersonal, and internalized oppression and how it affects the safety, permanence, and well-being of children. Through research and real-life examples, the reader will be immersed in a historical perspective of oppression faced by black single mothers involved with social service systems, understand the definition of oppression and its four interrelated facets, examine ways oppression plays out in child welfare supports and services, and discover new integrated methods of addressing oppression. The last chapter discusses theory, generalist social work practice, and transformational leadership styles, which can be used by social workers to advocate on behalf of their clients and inspire self-advocacy, thus transforming child welfare.

Book excerpt: “This groundbreaking work will give voice to an enormous population of women who are struggling to understand themselves in the face of their fathers’ absence.” —Claire Bidwell Smith, author of The Rules of Inheritance and After This When Motherless Daughters was published 20 years ago, it unleashed a tsunami of healing awareness. When Denna Babul and Karin Smithson couldn't find the equivalent book for fatherlessness, The Fatherless Daughter Project was born. The book will set fatherless women on the path to growth and fulfillment by helping them to understand how their loss has impacted their lives. A father is supposed to provide a sense of security and stability. Losing a father comes with particular costs that vary depending on the way he left and how old a girl was when she lost him. Drawing on interviews with over 5000 women who became fatherless due to death, divorce, neglect, and outright abandonment, the authors have found that fatherless daughters tend to push their emotions underground. These issues in turn become distinct patterns in their relationships as adult women and they often can't figure out why. Delivered with compassion and expertise, this book allows readers support and understanding they never had when they first needed it, and it encourages the conversation to continue.

Book excerpt: When Carol Floch realized that her marriage was about to end and that she was about to join the ranks of moms left to raise their children on their own, she could not stop crying. She mourned her shattered hopes and grieved the loss of the family she had always dreamed of. But mostly, she cried for her children. Into Carol's grief, regret, and fear, God's Spirit came with a message from Psalm 84: Build your nest near my altar, and I will be your children's source of security, protection, provision, and blessing. In The Single Mom's Devotional, Carol tells her story and shares with the sisterhood of single moms how they can build their family's nest in the protective shadow of God's presence. Single mothers, whether on their own after a divorce or a husband's death, will discover how to find true life in Christ and allow the strength of that inner life to be the compass by which they navigate an unpredictable future. Near God's altar, the cross of Christ is where single moms will discover life through relinquishment, power through dependence, and hope through surrender. Anchored at the foot of the cross, readers will find daily security and hope as they nourish their souls and nurture their children at a place near God's altar.

Book excerpt: Tracy Brown's Single Black Female is a taut, edgy, deftly spun novel about four friends grappling with the dramatic twists and turns of life, love and what it means to “make it” in America. Ivy Donovan is a successful stylist, entrepreneur, and single mom who has been loyal to her sons’ father, Michael, who’s serving a lengthy prison sentence. But life has gotten lonely over the years, and Ivy wants more for herself. Michael, however, isn’t about to lose his family. Coco Norris is well-off, single, childless, and struggling with her allegiance to emotionally unavailable men. When she finds a man who seems like he can give her everything she has ever wanted, Coco soon discovers that she has taken on more than she can possibly handle. Deja Maddox is a real estate agent who is married to Bobby, a police sergeant with the NYPD. They have assimilated, looking down on anything that doesn’t fit their buttoned-up, polished life. But Deja isn’t as satisfied as she would like everyone to believe. When Deja’s past returns with a vengeance, she’s forced to face herself as her “perfect” life begins to crumble. Nikki Diamond is a savvy, self-made businesswoman and social media darling who lives large and with no regrets. She’s also Deja’s little sister and thinks her sister can have so much more than her ho-hum marriage. And Nikki is all too happy to lend a “helping” hand to make that happen. Things come to a head when Ivy’s youngest son, Kingston, is caught up in a polarizing encounter with the NYPD. Everyone must figure out where they stand, including Bobby, who suddenly has to decide if his “blue life” matters more to him than his Black life and the Black lives of those he loves. Single Black Female highlights the nuances of Black love, the often tested bonds of Black families, what it means to face the world as a Black man and the joy and pain of being a Black woman.
