Download or read book Bitch written by Elizabeth Wurtzel and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2012-10-17 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of the bestselling Prozac Nation comes one of the most entertaining feminist manifestos ever written. In five brilliant extended essays, she links the lives of women as demanding and disparate as Amy Fisher, Hillary Clinton, Margaux Hemingway, and Nicole Brown Simpson. Wurtzel gives voice to those women whose lives have been misunderstood, who have been dismissed for their beauty, their madness, their youth. Bitch is a brilliant tract on the history of manipulative female behavior. By looking at women who derive their power from their sexuality, Wurtzel offers a trenchant cultural critique of contemporary gender relations. Beginning with Delilah, the first woman to supposedly bring a great man down (latter-day Delilahs include Yoko Ono, Pam Smart, Bess Myerson), Wurtzel finds many biblical counterparts to the men and women in today's headlines. She finds in the story of Amy Fisher the tragic plight of all Lolitas, our thirst for their brief and intense flame. She connects Hemingway's tragic suicide to those of Sylvia Plath, Edie Sedgwick, and Marilyn Monroe, women whose beauty was an end, ultimately, in itself. Wurtzel, writing about the wife/mistress dichotomy, explains how some women are anointed as wife material, while others are relegated to the role of mistress. She takes to task the double standard imposed on women, the cultural insistence on goodness and society's complete obsession with badness: what's a girl to do? Let's face it, if women were any real threat to male power, "Gennifer Flowers would be sitting behind the desk of the Oval Office," writes Wurtzel, "and Bill Clinton would be a lounge singer in the Excelsior Hotel in Little Rock." Bitch tells a tale both celebratory and cautionary as Wurtzel catalogs some of the most infamous women in history, defending their outsize desires, describing their exquisite loneliness, championing their take-no-prisoners approach to life and to love. Whether writing about Courtney Love, Sally Hemings, Bathsheba, Kimba Wood, Sharon Stone, Princess Di--or waxing eloquent on the hideous success of The Rules, the evil that is The Bridges of Madison County, the twisted logic of You'll Never Make Love in This Town Again--Wurtzel is back with a bitchography that cuts to the core. In prose both blistering and brilliant, Bitch is a treatise on the nature of desperate sexual manipulation and a triumph of pussy power.

Book excerpt: Never Again... Love almost stole everything from me. My career being the worst possible loss. I never should have bent the rules and dated a student. And now finally, after years of being alone, a pretty nurse has my attention. Caring, curvy, and so damn smart. She has me pacing the floor at night and wishing for things I thought were long since gone. Every part of me aches for a chance at stealing her breath, her heart, her body—forever. But the joke’s on me. She’s not just a nurse. She’s a student at the college where I work, and the past seems to replay itself over again before my eyes. Only this time, it’s so much worse than before. I put restrictions on myself to make sure I don’t have to suffer ever again. Too bad she wasn’t aware of my rules. Or maybe she was…

Book Synopsis Lexical Strata in English by : Heinz J. Giegerich
Download or read book Lexical Strata in English written by Heinz J. Giegerich and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-09-16 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Lexical Strata in English, Heinz Giegerich investigates the way in which alternations in the sound patterns of words interact with the morphological processes of the language. Drawing examples from English and German, he uncovers and spells out in detail the principles of 'lexical morphology and phonology', a theory that has in recent years become increasingly influential in linguistics. Giegerich queries many of the assumptions made in that theory, overturning some and putting others on a principled footing. What emerges is a formally coherent and highly constrained theory of the lexicon - the theory of 'base-driven' stratification - which predicts the number of lexical strata from the number of base-category distinctions recognized in the morphology of the language. Finally, he offers accounts of some central phenomena in the phonology of English (including vowel 'reduction', [r]-sandhi and syllabification), which both support and are uniquely facilitated by this new theory.

Book excerpt: Ever wonder what would happen if your world turned upside down in only a few minutes? That's the dilemma for fifteen-year-old Meagan Mast, violently left an orphan on the 1858 Nebraska Plains. She soon finds herself with Sir, a man that heals and kills with equal ease, watching life unfold around her, and praying to return to her Amish lifestyle, upbringing, and the Amish farmer she loves. Meagan finds it difficult to have an Amish lifestyle and still survive as settlers, soldiers, Indians, and other assorted characters invade her daily life. Her problems get worse when she rescues Katherine Smith from trouble. Far from happy over the rescue, Katherine thinks Meagan should die and leave her alone, a process Katherine tries to help along. The opposite of the Amish Meagan, Katherine finds lying, stealing, and whoring a fine way to live. She also manages to raise the ire of everyone around her with her actions, including breaking up peace talks and banishment from the only general store in the area. Katherine campaigns to have Meagan dead or removed from Sir's cabin. Meagan counters the moves while trying to preserve her Amish upbringing, not easy when Katherine is around. When bounty hunters shoot Sir, the girls have to stop arguments and tantrums to survive the gang of men wanting to kill them. With one girl able to shoot but refusing to kill, and the other girl willing to kill but having no idea how to shoot, they carry their respective outlooks into battle. But is the world ready when they stop fighting each other and team up to start fighting the world?

Book excerpt: Talking about money sucks; but so does being broke. Do your eyes glaze over just thinking about the mumbo-jumbo of finance? Do you break out into hives at the thought of money? Well, sister, you are not alone. In RICH BITCH, money expert and financial journalist Nicole Lapin lays out a 12-Step Plan in which she shares her experiences, mistakes and all, of getting her own finances in order. No lecturing, just help from a friend. And even though money is typically an off-limits conversation, nothing is off-limits here. Lapin rethinks every piece of financial wisdom you've ever heard and puts her own fresh, modern, sassy spin on it. Sure, there are some hard-and-fast rules about finance, but when it comes to your money, the only person who can spend it is you. Should you invest in a 401(k)? Maybe not. Should you splurge on that morning latte? Likely yes. Instead of nickel-and-diming yourself, Nicole's advice focuses on investing in yourself so you don't have to stress over the little things. But in order to do that, you have to be able to speak the language of money. After all, money is a language like anything else, and the sooner you can join the conversation, the sooner you can live the life you want, RICH BITCH rehabs whatever bad habits you might have and provides a plan you can not only sustain, but thrive with. It's time to go after the rich life you deserve, and confident enough to call yourself a RICH BITCH.
