Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bishop of Africa; Or the Life of William Taylor, D.D: With an Account of the Congo Country, and Mission For some time the blessed Holy Spirit has prompted me to write the following book, yea, it came upon me as an inspiration: so that I was compelled to write or disobey. It has seemed to me that the wonderful facts of the history of William Taylor ought to be put on permanent record. For years I have been gathering material for the same. Years ago I wrote a sketch of his life. This book will give a concise and somewhat complete account of his marvellous life and extensive travels; and of his great African mission; it will also tend to provoke the zeal and self-sacrifice of others. I write also to show how wonderfully his self-sustaining or Pauline method of support has been established; and also to show that this method by no means supersedes or disparages the work of the Missionary Society. Nay, verily! but it supplements and stimulates that work. And, as I am not an interested party, I hope to give an unprejudiced statement of facts that will be a blessing to all. I have gathered from all quarters a liberal amount of information concerning Central Africa, especially the region of the Congo, which is indeed a most promising mission field. This book was released on 1992 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry McNeal Turner was an "epoch-making man, " as his colleague Reverdy Ransom called him. A bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church from 1880 to 1915, Turner was also a politician and Georgia legislator during Reconstruction, U.S. Army chaplain, newspaper editor, prohibition advocate, civil rights and back-to-Africa activist, African missionary, and early proponent of black theology. This richly detailed book, the first full-length critical biography of Turner, firmly places him alongside DuBois and Washington as a preeminent visionary of the postbellum African-American experience. The strength and vitality of today's black church tradition owes much to the herculean labors of pioneers such as Turner, one of the most skillful denominational builders in American history. When emancipation created the prerequisites for a strong national religious organization, Turner, with his boldness, charisma, political wisdom, eloquence, and energy, took full advantage of the opportunity. Combining evangelicalism with forthright agitation for racial freedom, he instigated the most momentous transformation in A.M.E. Church history--the mission to the South. Stephen Angell views Turner's advocacy of ordination for women and his missionary work in Africa as a further outgrowth of the bishop's deep evangelical commitment. The book's epilogue offers the first serious analysis of Turner's theology and his replies to racist distortions of the Christian message.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An African bishop shares his story and ministry. Born in the small Zimbabwean village of Gandanzara, Bishop Eben Kanukayi Nhiwatiwa became an inspired and accomplished leader in the church and larger society. Elected as a bishop in The United Methodist Church in 2004, he has guided ministries in Zimbabwe and across Africa and beyond through periods of immense and rapid change. In his book By the Grace of God, the bishop takes the reader through his educational odyssey, winding through Zimbabwe and the United States. He narrates with humor his introduction to the US and its unfamiliar customs. He inspires readers with the story of the remarkable series of events that shaped him as a Christian and bishop. The book provides a succinct master class on the art and science of leadership. Drawing inspiration and insights from an array of literature and astute observation, Nhiwatiwa synthesizes what have been his most important gleanings about factors that contribute to visionary and effective leadership. Nhiwatiwa became known as the “Chabadza Bishop,” advocating for vibrant mutual partnerships with churches and annual conferences in other parts of the world. Chabadza is a Shona word meaning “to give a helping hand to someone who is already working.” He urges people asking for help to be active workers in the project themselves. He has diligently advanced ideas for collaboration that eliminate approaches rooted in maintaining dependency. Nhiwatiwa writes, “Life-changing events in my life took place, not because of my sustained goal to pursue a certain objective, but that by the grace of God.” His witness and leadership have helped transform The United Methodist Church for ministry in the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: In this spellbinding and riveting memoir, Barrington provides a brutally honest and gripping portrayal of his life as a young missionary priest. A racist alcoholic pastor nurses him through his first bout of malaria fever. Stood up to be shot by a group of drunken soldiers, a whiskey-drinking "John Wayne type" priest then shows real caring. Devastated by the death of a twelve years old school girl he was mentoring, he then has to bury her. Set during a pivotal period in the history of the Catholic church and bloody civil war in Nigeria, The Bishop Wears No Drawers is a true-to-life "survivor" tale replete with adrenaline-pumping adventures, daunting challenges and the added dimension of one priest's profound religious struggle to find his true self. Combined with warm humor, moving insights and personal testament Barrington offers an unfettered glimpse into the rarely entered domain and closed doors of the highest level of church management.

Written by the founder of Forbes Africa, this is a masterclass on how the brightest and most successful entrepreneurs across Africa made their fortunes, as well as a timely look at how the work of entrepreneurs can influence lives in Africa and create the jobs that empty state coffers can no longer afford. Chris Bishop gets up close and personal with the biggest names in business on the continent: Aliko Dangote, Patrice Motsepe, Nicky Oppenheimer, Christo Wiese, Wendy Appelbaum and Stephen Saad, among others. These are the stories of how they not only survived, but thrived, in the fast and furious world of African business: Narendra Raval, the penniless priest who became a steel baron; Tim Tebeila, the barefoot apple-seller who turned into a mining millionaire; Herman Mashaba, the ‘knocksman’ who went from running dice games and dealing drugs to running a city; Pascal Dozie, the economics student who studied with Mick Jagger ... This is a rich tapestry of stories about the super-wealthy and the qualities that make them so spectacularly successful, in arguably the most challenging economic arena in the world.
