Book excerpt: As a narrative critical study of the Lukan Infancy Narrative, this is a work which puts new questions to an old and (some would claim) over interpreted text. The work traces through the Infancy narrative two trajectories - one theological, the other epistemological. At the point of theology, Luke focuses upon God and the strange shape of the divine visitation; at the point of epistemology, Luke focuses upon the human being and what is needed to recognise the divine visitation, given its strangeness. The study then shows how the two trajectories converge in the Infancy Narrative's last episode, the Finding of the Child in the Temple. Though often accorded scant attention, this is an episode which, Coleridge argues, is the true climax of the Infancy Narrative, since it is only then that Jesus is born in the narrative as the protagonist he will prove consistently to be and only then that the Lukan Narrative itself is born. It is this rather than any physical birth which most absorbs Luke in the first two chapters of the Gospel. Though a study of the Infancy narrative, this is a work with far-reaching implications for the whole of Luke-Acts

Although the majority of recent scholarship assumes that such features stem from an imitation of the Septuagint (imitation theory), the issue has not been settled satisfactorily. Others argue that Luke probably relied on a written source for the infancy narrative-or at least for some parts of it-and that this source material was composed in imitation of the Septuagint. Luke was not, however, merely the reviser or compiler of his source; rather, he rewrote the source employing his own style and language for his own purpose. Here, Chang-Wook Jung examines the arguments most commonly put forward by both sides and considers their merits.

Samuel Byrskog employs models from the interdisciplinary field of oral history as presented by Paul Thompson, coupled with insights from cultural anthropology, in order to examine the interaction between the present and the past as the gospel tradition evolved. The ancient Greek and Roman historians, with their use of eyewitness testimony as sources to the past and as central elements in interpretive and narrativizing processes of the present, serve as the basis for unraveling culture-specific patterns of oral history, and thus for conceptualizing similar aspects during the development of the gospel tradition. Eyewitness testimonies played a central but varying role in early Christianity. They were transmitted in the matrix of discipleship, where verbal and behavioral traditions were passed on through acts of mimesis. The folkloristic notion of re-oralization explains how oral accounts regularly interacted with written texts, indicating a vivid and engaged relationship to the past as well as the semantic significance of oral communication and performance. Factual truth was essential but inseparable from interpreted truth during the course of investigation, transmission, and composition. The gospel tradition developed through a subtle interaction between the unique historic events of the past and the various circumstances of the present. The narrative and historical dimensions of a text cannot be separated, because the semantic codes of a text are often located in the culture and not in the text itself. The gospels are therefore the synthesis of history and story, intertwining the horizons of the past and of the present in their own right.

Using reader-response criticism as his primary method, Zhodi Angami brings his tribal context of North East India into conversation with Matthew's account of the birth of Jesus. Since tribal people of North East India see themselves as living under colonial rule, a tribal reader sees Matthew's text as a narrative that actively resists and subverts imperial rule. Likewise, the tribal experience of living at the margins inspires a tribal reader to look at the narrative from the underside, from the perspective of those who are sidelined, ignored, belittled or forgotten. Tribal biblical interpretation presented here follows a process of conversation between tribal worldview and Matthew's narrative. Such a method animates the text for the tribal reader and makes the biblical narrative not only more intelligible to the tribal reader but allows the text to speak directly to the tribal context.

In the present work the author examines one major theme within Luke's christology, that of the coming king from the line of David. A study of the Lukan birth narrative and the speeches in Acts reveals that Luke shows a strong interest in this royal-messianic theme, introducing it into passages which are introductory and programmatic for his christology as a sermon, portraying Jesus in strongly prophetic terms. The author seeks a synthesis of these seemingly conflicting royal and prophetic portraits in Luke's interpretation of the Old Testament book of Isaiah. When Isaiah is read as a unity, the eschatological deliverer is at the same time Davidic king (Isa. 9.11), suffering servant of Yahweh (Isa. 42-53), and prophet herald of salvation (Isa. 61), leading God's people on an eschatological new exodus. On the basis of this synthesis the christology of Luke-Acts is seen to be both consistent and unified, forming an integral part of Luke's wider purpose in his two-volume work.

Book excerpt: Numerous scholars have noted various elements of literary structure in the Gospel of Luke, many of them patterned, such as chiasm. Several of these scholars have rigorously explored the significance of such structure. A common conclusion is that if Luke is consistent with other ancient writers, then the observation of some elements of patterned structure, e.g., what has already been discovered in the Gospel, suggests that there is probably considerably more. This book offers a comprehensive literary structure for the Gospel of Luke, thoroughly and critically evaluates it, and ultimately focuses on theology that may be derived from this structure. As groundwork, the Introduction provides rigorous tests for assessing the intentionality behind proposals of parallelism. The first chapter then employs the tests in an evaluation of Robert C. Tannehill's work on Luke-Acts, which is representative of studies on correspondences that are not strictly structural in nature. His contribution enables us to grasp how Luke encourages the reader to read passages in the light of other passages within the Gospel and, accordingly, provides an interpretive aid for our study. The second chapter applies the tests to the Lukan correspondences suggested by Charles H. Talbert, which are inherently structural. His analysis of Luke-Acts and other Greco-Roman literature provides a strong theoretical foundation for our own proposal. Chapter three surveys OT, Greco-Roman, and NT texts that bear a similar patterned structure to what we discover in Luke. The structure of Luke is presented and carefully evaluated in chapter four, and the theological implications of that structure are developed in chapter five, shedding much fresh light on Lukan theology.
