Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Penned in the mid-1970s, People Movements in the Punjab gives an accurate analysis of the history of the church in the Punjab. After spending 12 years ministering in Pakistan, the authors set about finding the answers to the following questions: · What caused the church in the Punjab to grow from the 1880s into the first half of the 20th century? · Which missionary methods were effective, and which were ineffective? · What segments of society proved responsive? · Are any of these factors part of the present-day scene? Based on primary sources, including church and mission records, missionary and national leaders' biographies, and census reports, the author's well-written research provides a profound view of the churches' growth in the Punjab. The book includes a substantial appendix, "A Brief Comparative Study of Other Churches in Pakistan," which gives a wealth of information. And although this study is based on the growth of the church in Pakistan, the pattern of development and church growth principles apply to scores of areas on the Indian subcontinent as well. This authentic church history has great relevance for the church and her leaders today.

Azariah (1874-1945), the first Indian bishop of an Anglican diocese and the most successful leader of rural conversion movements to Christianity in modern India. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a biography of Vedanayagam Samuel Azariah (1874-1945), bishop of the Anglican Church in India from 1912 until his death in 1945. His life sheds new light on the challenges and opportunities faced by religious minorities throughout the world today. As a Christian leader in a non-Christian culture, he negotiated complex cultural, social, political, and economic pressure with exceptional skill and diplomacy. As the first Indian bishop of an Anglican diocese, and as modern India's most successful leader of depressed class and non-Brahmin conversion movements to Christianity, Azariah was equally at home with the untouchables of rural India and the unreachables of the British Empire. From this platform Azariah inevitably came into contact - and, ironically, also into conflict - with the dominating presence of Mahatma Gandhi. Susan Billington Harper here reconstructs major events and issues of Azariah's public life, including a previously unstudied controversy with Gandhi over the issue of conversion and relgious freedom in the 1930s. Based on hitherto untapped primary sources, including diocesan records and vernacular oral histories expressed in both stories and songs, this fascinating volume not only provides the first critical study of Bishop Azariah's life but also offers important - at times challenging - insights for those interested in modern India and the place of Christianity within it.

Book Synopsis The Ideal of the Self-Governing Church by : C. Peter Williams
Download or read book The Ideal of the Self-Governing Church written by C. Peter Williams and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-05-18 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is part of current missiological orthodoxy that newly created churches should obtain independence from cross-cultural missionaries as soon as possible. It is not often realised that much Victorian missionary thinking shared that objective. This important new work examines the ideal of the self-governing church in the Victorian period through a study of the official mind of the Church Missionary Society. The study begins with an examination of Henry Venn's, the famous CMS Secretary, commitment to self-supporting, self-propagating and self-governing churches. Was he a lonely figure battling against the accepted wisdom of the mid-Victorian period? The author argues that he was not, and was, if anything a slightly conservative spokesman for much current wisdom. Far from his views being abandoned at his death, they were the accepted orthodoxy within CMS until the end of the century. Although they came under increasing attack in the nineties, it was not until the beginning of the twentieth century, particularly under the influence of Eugune Stock, that they were finally abandoned. The importance of this study lies not only in its ability to explain Victorian missionary development, but also because it takes on board the age-old issue of how quickly should a church become self-governing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basil Miller traces the life of John Hyde from beginning to triumphant climax. We see God moulding Hyde’s soul into an instrument t for His use. We hear John speaking the language of heaven to the eager men and women of India. Paramount in the biography is the power of prayer in the life of this great missionary. Courageously Hyde placed his petitions before God and inspired others to do the same. In the autumn of his life this consecrated missionary to India saw the gleaming harvest of his prayers—a harvest of souls saved by the redeeming blood of Jesus Christ. At last ‘the man who never slept’ went to be with his Saviour. But today in the Punjab, under the shadow of the Himalayas, still hovers the spirit of Praying Hyde - ‘the apostle of prayer.’ Do you desire a richer prayer life — deeper communion with God — more eloquent and soul-stirring speech with the Almighty? A thoughtful reading of this biography of Praying Hyde will prove helpful to you as you seek to develop that supreme skill of the Christian life - prayer.
