Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of East Pennsylvania and New Jersey In preparing the following Catalogue, the object of the writer has been to present in a simple and compact form the Ornithology of a small portion of North America, comprising that part of Pennsylvania eastward of the Alleghany Mountains, and of New Jersey, including the coast line which extends from Sandy Hook to Cape May. From the geographical position of the district it is particularly favourable for observation, being the resort, at some period of the year, of a large proportion of the birds of this continent; and, from the fact of its being the temporary resting-place of most of the migratory birds, there is probably no district of the same extent in this country that is frequented by such a number of species. A considerable number of our Summer visitants from the Gulf States and Mexico appear to make it their northern limit, while other flocks remain only a short period in Spring, and migrate still further north, penetrating as far as British America to breed; and these again arrive in Autumn on their return journey to their Winter retreats. It may likewise be noted that the district is the southern limit of many species which breed at Hudson's Bay and the fur countries, and pass the Winter on the Delaware and Chesapeake, thus forming a line of separation, so to speak, for the migratory flights of many interesting birds coming from opposite directions. On consulting the list, however, it will be remarked that the proportion of what may be considered resident birds is small. This fact seems to have attracted observation as far back as the time of Dr Benj. S.Barton, who published a work entitled Fragments of Natural History about seventy years ago, in which it is stated that in the district now spoken of, very few species remained all the year, and that even of these there appeared to have been a partial migration in severe Winters; such birds, especially, as lived on insects and small fruits, being compelled to retire southwards a fact still noticeable at the present day, many species that usually migrate remaining in mild and open Winters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of New Jersey The object of this work is the familiarizing of the every day citizen unused to scientific terms, with the habits and economic importance of the birds of the State of New Jersey. The study of Ornithology as suggested in books treating on the subject is one attended with difficulties sufficient to dampen the ardor of even the more than willing student. The long and high-sounding names used in the scientific nomenclature - which even Latinizes common English words - the many divisions into families and species. and the disputes of authors as to what particular family a certain bird belongs to have undoubtedly in the past deterred many from following a study in itself so interesting and so useful. In the present treatise the author has avoided all scientific terms and designations and has endeavored to foster a better acquaintance between the human family and its feathered friends without necessitating the medium of protracted study on the part of those who would like to know more about the birds around us. For the advanced student this book will be of no value, for in it will be found no learned disquisitions pertaining to the higher phases of Ornithology; it simply purports to tell in plain language sufficient about the habits of birds to indicate their value to mankind and by plain descriptions to facilitate identification. The bobolink, with its variable plumage and merry song, is an object of interest, but that interest will be minimized to a great many when they are told that the first thing of importance to know about the bobolink is that he is a dolichonyx oryzvorus of the family of icteridae. Scientific classification has its manifold uses, but there is something so deterrent about it to the average reader that it has been wholly eschewed in the present publication. Yet there has been no comprehensive and readily available guide to the status and distribution of all these species--until now. The Birds of New Jersey is the most up-to-date and succinct guide for the birds of New Jersey and includes all species known to the state from historical times to the present. Featuring over 200 color photos of rarities and regular species, this book authoritatively provides individual entries that include a summary of status and seasonal distribution, and comments on changes over time. Detailed color-coded maps accompany species accounts, and for species recorded five or fewer times, dates and locations of each record are noted. The introduction examines the state's geography, the history of bird records, and background information to species accounts, and the extensive bibliography guides birders to original sources used in the book. This is the essential resource for birders, ornithologists, and nature enthusiasts interested in the birds of New Jersey and the greater surrounding region. Most up-to-date status and distribution guide for New Jersey and surrounding region All bird species known to the state Species accounts describe the preferred habitat and abundance of species Range maps in color detail seasonal distribution For migratory birds, spring and fall migration times indicated More than 200 color photographs of rare and common species
