Ask the average man on the street, or better yet, the average woman behind the wheel. Then you will get a picture of burly, dangerous, risk taking bulliesathe terror of the highways. Ignore for a moment that the majority are generally very conscientious drivers and among the most skilled on the road. Yet, because the drivers of the big rigs often flout the speed limits, and some are reckless, the public thinks of them as road-hogging hoodlums. I am not writing this book to combat this common image, though I myself am a retired professional driver who spent thirty-five years racking up over three million miles of driving. What I would like to do is offer an inside view of what it is like to be a trucker. I want to take the reader inside those imposing cabs and help you understand the motives, feelings and problems that truckers face. Perhaps by doing that, I will be able to convince you that most long-haul drivers are average people. They are just like everyone elseadecent, God-fearing men or women trying to earn a living for their families. My most important goal of this book, however, goes beyond depicting the life of a trucker. I hope to improve the driveras lot in order to improve general highway safety. My years of trucking have motivated me to speak out on the issue of truck safety. The book will give the reader a feel for what it is like to be behind the wheel of one of those big rigs, and it will relate anecdotes from my own driving experience.
