Book excerpt: This volume offers a unique approach to the history of biblical interpretation, examining the historical, theological, and philosophical presuppositions of select interpreters in order to tease out the complexity of factors that shape one s engagement with biblical texts. Taking seriously the power of biblical texts to shape and address questions common to all humanity, these essays not only provide a window into how the biblical text was read at specific times and places and but also suggest fruitful ways to read it today. Contributions in both English and German focus on biblical interpretation in Hellenistic Judaism and early Christianity, nineteenth-century German philosophy, and contemporary biblical theology. The contributors are Harold Attridge, Wilhelm Gräb, Stephan Grätzel, Garrett Green, Christine Helmer, Bernd Janowski, Maren Niehoff, Joachim Ringleben, Marvin Sweeney, and Karen Torjesen.Paperback edition is available from the Society of Biblical Literature (www.sbl-site.org)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The difficulty of interpreting the Bible is felt all over today. Is the Bible still authoritative for the faith and practice of the church? If so, in what way? What practices of reading offer the most appropriate approach to understanding Scripture? The church's lack of clarity about these issues has hindered its witness and mission, causing it to speak with an uncertain voice to the challenges of our time. This important book is for a twenty-first-century church that seems to have lost the art of reading the Bible attentively and imaginatively. The Art of Reading Scripture is written by a group of eminent scholars and teachers seeking to recover the church's rich heritage of biblical interpretation in a dramatically changed cultural environment. Asking how best to read the Bible in a postmodern context, the contributors together affirm up front "Nine Theses" that provide substantial guidance for the church. The essays and sermons that follow both amplify and model the approach to Scripture outlined in the Nine Theses. Lucidly conceived, carefully written, and shimmering with fresh insights, The Art of Reading Scripture proposes a far-reaching revolution in how the Bible is taught in theological seminaries and calls pastors and teachers in the church to rethink their practices of using the Bible. Book excerpt: Whether we admit it or not everyone interprets the Bible. The sticky part is to interpret it properly. But where does one go for a viable method of interpretation? Currently three methods of interpretation predominate: author-centered, which looks to the world of the author for meaning; text-centered, which journeys to the world of the text in search of significance; and reader-centered, which focuses on the reader's role in shaping the meaning of a text. Each of these approaches has validity, but none has a monopoly on finding the correct meaning of a text. In Biblical Interpretation, W. Randolph Tate invites the reader to explore the potential of each of these methodologies, noting the tremendous contribution that each makes toward finding meaning. He then shows how the most viable meaning often emerges out of an intersection of these three worlds: The world of the author and the world of the reader intersect in the world of the text to produce meaning. Tate has not, however, resigned himself merely to describe sterile methodologies or abstract theories. Concerned that readers have a practical grasp of the interpretive process, he offers description, prescription, example, and application. The volume is especially tailored to allow the nonspecialist an entree into the world of biblical interpretation. Thus, each chapter includes a Review & Study section where a listing of Key Terms discussed and defined in the text helps manage the terminology; Study Questions prod the reader to wrestle with the interpretive issues; and suggested Further Reading directs the reader to additional resources for study. For those serious about interpreting the Bible, this volume becomes a passport to anexciting journey. Readers may find themselves challenged and stretched, but they will be grateful for having taken the venture.
