Book Synopsis The Bible’s First History by : Robert B. Coote
Download or read book The Bible’s First History written by Robert B. Coote and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about an ancient writer, the J writer--the Yahwist--who produced a work of political imagination. This work is embedded mainly in the first four books of the Bible, best known for some of the most popular and influential biblical stories in Genesis and Exodus. The purpose of the book is to represent the whole of the original story with attention to its own meaning, without the influence of the other literary strands with which it was later supplemented. Therefore the work includes a fresh, complete translation of the text of the J writer, who produced the Bible's first history. The translation itself helps to establish more clearly than ever the integrity of the J writer. The concern here is WHEN and WHY this history was written, especially in light of the concerns for justice and prosperity. Throughout it is demonstrated HOW and WHY this history comes from the court of David; it is a royal history of David's subjects as though they were descended from pastoral nomads such as Abram, Isaac, and Jacob. It is argued that the intended audience of the history was probably those bedouin who regularly visited the court of David in Hebron and Jerusalem. Here is a bold and brilliant representation of the J writer's composition, perhaps as it was originally intended to be read or heard. This ancient tour de force takes on new life in the hands of these skilled interpreters.

Book Synopsis Genesis: History, Fiction, or Neither? by : James K. Hoffmeier

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of the Genesis narrative has sparked much debate among Christians. This book introduces three predominant interpretive genres and their implications for biblical understanding. Each contributor identifies their position on the genre or genres of Genesis, chapters 1-11, addresses why their interpretation is respectful of and appropriate to the text, and contributes examples of its application to a variety of passages. The positions include: Theological History(Genesis can be taken seriously as both history and theology) – defended by James K. Hoffmeier. Proto-History (the early Genesis narratives consist of a variety of literary genres; which, nonetheless, do not obscure the book's theological teaching) – defended by Gordon J. Wenham. Ancient Historiography (an understanding of Genesis that seeks to reconcile the limitations of its human authors with the nature of it being the Word of God) defended by Kenton L. Sparks. General editor and Old Testament scholar Charles Halton explains the importance of genre and provides historical insight in the introduction and helpful summaries of each position in the conclusion. In the reader-friendly Counterpoints format, this book helps readers to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of each view and draw informed conclusions in this much-debated topic.
Book Synopsis A Short History of the Interpretation of the Bible by : Robert McQueen Grant
Download or read book A Short History of the Interpretation of the Bible written by Robert McQueen Grant and published by Augsburg Fortress Publishing. This book was released on 1984 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book represents the kind of collaboration that one wishes could go on all the time. Here, in other words, the interdependence of two specializations (biblical and philsophical theology) is made explicit in both theory and in reflection on scriptures."? Commonweal"This book was originally published about twenty years ago and then unfortunately went out of print. It was such a remarkable helpful little book that many people clamored for its reappearance. Finally, Fortress Press has responded by bringing out Grant's original study on the history of biblical exegesis in the church from the first century to the present with a theoretical afterword written by the Roman Catholic theologian David Tracy. The result is an immensely useful and readable study of both the history and hermeneutics of Bible interpretation."? The Spire, The Divinity School, Vanderbilt University
Book Synopsis Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible: Psalms by : Willem S. Prinslo
Download or read book Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible: Psalms written by Willem S. Prinslo and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2019-06-18 with total page 1672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extract from the Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible provides Prinslo’s introduction to and concise commentary on Psalms. The Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible presents, in nontechnical language, the best of modern scholarship on each book of the Bible, including the Apocrypha. Reader-friendly commentary complements succinct summaries of each section of the text and will be valuable to scholars, students, and general readers. Rather than attempt a verse-by-verse analysis, these volumes work from larger sense units, highlighting the place of each passage within the overarching biblical story. Commentators focus on the genre of each text—parable, prophetic oracle, legal code, and so on—interpreting within the historical and literary context. The volumes also address major issues within each biblical book—including the range of possible interpretations—and refer readers to the best resources for further discussions.
