Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible and the Classics While noticing this resemblance, I well remember that unbelieving thoughts would sometimes enter my mind, in opposition to the faith in which I had been trained, and that I was tempted to say, perhaps all these marvellous things in the Bible and in the heathen mythology are alike false. To the blessing of God on a religious educa tion I owe it, that this temptation was not more effectual, and that the impression was not an abiding one, as I fear has been the case with thousands of the young who have not enjoyed the same religious advantages, and even with some who have been instructed in the scriptures of truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Bible With this account of the building of the temple, imperfect as it is, we should at once close the present chap ter, were we not anxious to meet certain difficulties which we are aware, from personal experience, must afl'ect the mind of the reader while perusing some of the foregoing details. The sacrifice of Saul's descendants, for example, to gratify the vindictive feelin s of the Gibeonites, as well as the arting admonitions of avid to Solomon, respecting J cab, himei, and others, have been felt by many reflecting persons to militate, in appearance at least, against the con sistency of the sacred chronicles while the nature of Da vid's sin in numbering the people, with the terrible conse quences that followed, are matters well calculated to perplex even the most sober-minded. We frankly acknowledge, that after consulting a host of commentators, we have not been able entirely to elucidate the mystery which attaches to some of these transactions; but of the fruits of our re searches, the following may be taken as a compend. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible: Its Origin, Its Significance, and Its Abiding Worth This volume has been written in the hope that it may prove helpful in the present perplexity. The Bible has irretrievably lost the place once accorded to it by the consent of Christendom, and this is coming to be realized by an ever-increasing number. Not criticism alone, nor even chiefly, has been responsible for the change; combined advance from several sides has made the old position untenable. It is a momentous change and might easily prove tragic. The retribution for extravagant claims is apt to be the repudiation of all claims whatsoever. But those who accept the truth of Christianity must find in Scripture the classical documents of their religion. To plead for the acceptance of our faith is no part of the present enterprise; for what the author has to say on this theme he would refer the reader to his volume, Christianity: Its Nature and Its Truth, to which this work is intended to be a companion. But while in many ways the defence of the Bible has been lightened by the earlier work, he has felt that some statement of the attitude he has adopted towards Scripture was its necessary completion. It is the writer's conviction that while a position injudiciously selected can be no longer held, the defenders of the Bible have been driven to ground from which they will not easily be dislodged. If some claims made for it cannot be sustained, other claims, and those the most vital, may be substantiated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The That-Clause: In the Authorized Version of the Bible In order to substantiate certain generalizations in eident to the preparation of a forthcoming volume on Old English syntax, I have found it necessary to take somewhat detailed notes upon texts later than those immediately under survey. Encouraged by the sug gestion of my friend and master, Professor Albert S. Cook, of Yale University, I am publishing a few of these for whatever value they may have for others working in this field. A few months ago an earlier study, mentioned on the following page, appeared in Herrig's Archiv. The present brochure, containing a larger group of phenomena, arranged in topical order, is likewise offered as a mere bit of rubble in the foundation-wall of English syntax, which a stronger and more skilful hand than mine may some day build.
