Book excerpt: Americans have fallen in love with Spanish food in recent years, and no one has done more to play matchmaker than the award-winning chef José Andrés. In this irresistible companion volume to his public television show Made in Spain, José reminds us—in the most alluring and delicious way—that the food of his native Spain is as varied and inventive as any of the world’s great cuisines. To prove it, José takes us on a flavorful tour of his beloved homeland, from Andalucía to Aragón. Along the way, he shares recipes that reflect not just local traditions but also the heart and soul of Spain’s distinctive cooking. In the Basque Country, we discover great fish dishes and the haute cuisine of some of the finest restaurants in the world. In Cantabria, famous for its dairy products, we find wonderful artisanal cheeses. In Valencia, we learn why the secret to unforgettable paella is all in the rice. And in Castilla La Mancha, José shows us the land of the great Don Quixote, where a magical flower produces precious saffron. The dishes of Made in Spain show the diversity of Spanish cooking today as it is prepared in homes and restaurants from north to south—from casual soups and sandwiches to soul-warming dishes of long-simmered beans and artfully composed salads. Many dishes showcase the fine Spanish products that are now widely available across America. Many more are prepared with the regular ingredients available in any good supermarket. With more than one hundred simple, straightforward recipes that beautifully capture the flavors and essence of Spanish cooking, Made in Spain is an indispensable addition to any cookbook collection.

Book Synopsis Focus-related Operations at the Right Edge in Spanish by : Iván Ortega-Santos
Download or read book Focus-related Operations at the Right Edge in Spanish written by Iván Ortega-Santos and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-05-11 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Syntactic movement is a pervasive phenomenon in natural language and, as such, has played a key role in syntactic theorizing. Nonetheless, an understanding of the mechanism that allows a constituent to appear to the right of its base-generated position has remained elusive. This groundbreaking research monograph aims to address this gap in our knowledge by expanding the inventory of languages and data sets traditionally considered in the literature. Specifically, Ortega-Santos analyzes the interplay between focus, word order and ellipsis in Spanish. A major finding that emerges from the analysis is that the tension between linearization requirements and rightward movement is diminished by ellipsis. Current debates on the syntax of the VOS order and preverbal subjects in Null-Subject Languages also figure prominently in the discussion, as novel empirical evidence for the existence of null expletives is provided: a non-trivial issue for our understanding of the Extended Projection Principle and subjecthood across languages.

Book Synopsis Left Sentence Peripheries in Spanish by : Andreas Dufter
Download or read book Left Sentence Peripheries in Spanish written by Andreas Dufter and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-07-31 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the advent of syntactic cartography, left sentence peripheries have begun to take center stage in linguistic research. Following the lead of Rizzi (1997), much work on left peripheries has been focused on Italian, whereas other Romance languages have attracted somewhat less attention. This volume offers a well-balanced set of articles investigating left sentence peripheries in Spanish. Some articles explore the historical evolution of left dislocation and fronting operations, while others seek to assess the extent – and the limits – of variation found between different geographical varieties and registers of the contemporary language. Moreover, the volume comprises several case studies on the interfaces between syntax, semantics, and information structure, and the implications of these for pragmatic interpretation and the organization of discourse. Cross-linguistic and typological perspectives are also provided in due course in order to position the analyses developed for Spanish within a larger research context.

Download or read book Spanish Angst written by LLVT and published by Author House. This book was released on 2007-10-24 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish Angst is a high concept comedy set in 1997 and centred on a strong female protagonist. Bella, a 23 year old marketing graduate, leaves the USA behind to find greener grass in sunny Spain. Despite her Spanish parents and happy childhood memories of Spain, Bella’s Madrid experience doesn’t match her expectations. The owner of the firm where she works believes that all around him exist solely to increase his personal wealth. Her direct boss, Marga, is a jealous forty-something who delights in exploiting her and insulting her dress sense. Her attempts to find a different job seem surreal, she can’t get her t.v. fixed, she can’t get a decent meal, no one seems to understand her accent and her matchmaking flat mate keeps setting her up with losers. Bella is just too American, feminist and goal oriented for the people around her and the cultural clashes provide constant entertainment. She is also too stubborn to just give up. Based on over twelve years of the author’s experience working and seeking work in Madrid, this is more than just a comedic treatment of how different attitudes and ideologies can be from one country to the next. It is also a real reflection of the work environment for women in Madrid. So if you know anyone who dreams of moving abroad to enjoy a laid back culture, have them read this first!!

Book Synopsis A History of Spanish Film by : Sally Faulkner
Download or read book A History of Spanish Film written by Sally Faulkner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-04-11 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Spanish Film explores Spanish film from the beginnings of the industry to the present day by combining some of the most exciting work taking place in film studies with some of the most urgent questions that have preoccupied twentieth-century Spain. It addresses new questions in film studies, like 'prestige film' and 'middlebrow cinema', and places these in the context of a country defined by social mobility, including the 1920s industrial boom, the 1940s post-Civil War depression, and the mass movement into the middle classes from the 1960s onwards. Close textual analysis of some 42 films from 1910-2010 provides an especially useful avenue into the study of this cinema for the student. - Uniquely offers extensive close readings of 42 films, which are especially useful to students and teachers of Spanish cinema. - Analyses Spanish silent cinema and films of the Franco era as well as contemporary examples. - Interrogates film's relations with other media, including literature, pictorial art and television. - Explores both 'auteur' and 'popular' cinemas. - Establishes 'prestige' and the 'middlebrow' as crucial new terms in Spanish cinema studies. - Considers the transnationality of Spanish cinema throughout its century of existence. - Contemporary directors covered in this book include Almodóvar, Bollaín, Díaz Yanes and more.
