Of Marlowe's four chief works, Tam burlaz'ne is too crude and tedious, in spite of several fine passages 5 Doctor Fausms, though admirable in Outline, lacks interest in detail, and is, besides, permanently superseded by the mighty work of Goethe finally, Edward though its scenes are knitted together more closely than those of its predecessors, and though its murder-scene is indeed masterly, yet as a whole lacks vivid characters. So I have chosen T be few of Malta, which exhibits Marlowe's great qualities and their defects, and which will always be interesting from the comparisons to be made between Barabas and Shylock. Elizabethan drama centres in Shakespeare, not merely for the general reader, but also for the professional student. Shake speare seems to have tried nearly every form or plan suggested by his predecessors and given it in many cases its supreme expression. Moreover, to an extent which was at one time greatly under-estimated, his successors recognized his pre - eminence and started from his achievement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relations of Shirley's Plays to the Elizabethan Drama I have based my study upon the gifford-dyce edition. The early quartos and duodecimos of Shirley's plays are generally so scarce as to preclude their use by many schol ars; and as my treatment of the plays has had to do chiefly with the action and but little with the text itself, I have thought it best to use and to refer to the more accessible (though unsatisfactory) collected edition. I wish to call attention to the fact that in my citations of acts and scenes I have referred to the numbers at their beginnings, and not to those at the tops of the respective pages which are often incorrect. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Joseph Long (1866–1952) was an American writer, naturalist and minister. He lived and worked in Stamford, Connecticut as a minister of the First Congregationalist Church. As a naturalist, he would leave Stamford every March, often with his two daughters Lois Long and Cesca, son, Brian to travel to "the wilderness" of Maine. There they would stay until the first snows of October, although sometimes he would stay all winter. In the 1920s, he began spending his summers in Nova Scotia, claiming "the wilderness is getting too crowded". He wrote of these wilderness experiences in the books Ways of Wood Folk, Wilderness Ways, Wood-folk Comedies, Northern Trails, Wood Folk at School, and many others. His earlier books were illustrated by Charles Copeland; two later ones were illustrated by Charles Livingston Bull. Long believed that the best way to experience the wild was to plant yourself and sit for hours on end to let the wild "come to you; and they will!"

Book excerpt: This book, which presents the whole splendid history of English literature from Anglo-Saxon times to the close of the Victorian Era, has three specific aims. The first is to create or to encourage in every student the desire to read the best books, and to know literature itself rather than what has been written about literature. The second is to interpret literature both personally and historically, that is, to show how a great book generally reflects not only the author's life and thought but also the spirit of the age and the ideals of the nation's history. The third aim is to show, by a study of each successive period, how our literature has steadily developed from its first simple songs and stories to its present complexity in prose and poetry. To carry out these aims we have introduced the following features: (1) A brief, accurate summary of historical events and social conditions in each period, and a consideration of the ideals which stirred the whole nation, as in the days of Elizabeth, before they found expression in literature. (2) A study of the various literary epochs in turn, showing what each gained from the epoch preceding, and how each aided in the development of a national literature. (3) A readable biography of every important writer, showing how he lived and worked, how he met success or failure, how he influenced his age, and how his age influenced him. (4) A study and analysis of every author's best works, and of many of the books required for college-entrance examinations. (5) Selections enough--especially from earlier writers, and from writers not likely to be found in the home or school library--to indicate the spirit of each author's work; and directions as to the best works to read, and where such works may be found in inexpensive editions. (6) A frank, untechnical discussion of each great writer's work as a whole, and a critical estimate of his relative place and influence in our literature.

Book excerpt: (Applause Books). Boisterous and unrestrained like the age itself, the Elizabethan theatre has long defended its place at the apex of English dramatic history. Shakespeare was but the brightest star in this extraordinary galaxy of playwrights. The stage boasted a rich and varied repertoire from courtly and romantic comedy to domestic and high tragedy, melodrama, farce, and histories. The Gassner-Green anthology revives the whole range of this universal stage, offering us the unbounded theatrical inventiveness of the age. Elizabethan Drama is designed to provide the modern reader with complete access to the plays, as well as the beguiling Elizabethan world which was their backdrop. John Gassner's classic introduction is supplemented by his and William Green's superb prefaces to the individual plays. Marginal glosses and footnotes throughout keep the immediacy of the Elizabethan stage within easy reach.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Technic in Elizabethan Tragedy We shall attempt to trace in this study the coming into existence of a technic in Elizabethan tragedy, an evolution that best demonstrates itself in Shakespeare's plays. We shall therefore be concerned for the most part with him; but, in preparation for him, with the plays immediately pre ceding and with the elements handed down from the Middle Ages. What we shall need to inquire into will not be the make-up of any one tragedy in itself, but in its relation to other tragedies, and for the evidence it gives of an advanc ing technic - the employment by its author of points of structure that critics nowadays consider essential to a well built tragedy.
