Book excerpt: At long last, the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) is expected to come into effect in 2016. It is larger in scale than any other international trade agreement in Canada's history, and many homegrown businesses are excited about the new opportunities it may bring. But while tariff elimination on goods is typically the most talked-about feature, other parts of this particular deal may offer even greater benefits to Canadian firms. If companies try to build their exports on the strength of tariff elimination alone, they can expect only a modest benefit from CETA. On the upside, Canadian firms can take advantage of CETA by proactively innovating and adapting their products and services to the many wealthy European markets. Join Danielle Goldfarb for a presentation of new Conference Board of Canada research that: identifies which sectors should benefit from tariff reductions describes how companies can achieve much larger gains from the CETA deal, demonstrates how Canadian companies can better understand the opportunities in various European markets.

Book excerpt: The central pillar of the CETA will be the general obligation of each side (that is, Canada and the European Union, including respective political subunits) to not discriminate against the goods,. [...] For that reason, agreements such as the CETA, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the myriad of other such treaties are referred to commonly as preferential trade agreements, or "PTAs." This E-Brief examines one of the important elements of the non-discrimination obligation in the CETA - the Most-Favoured-Nation ("MFN") rule - and discusses beneficial side effects of the CETA, with [...] The MFN concept has a venerable ancestry, hinged on the notion of fair and non-discriminatory treatment in international commerce, and is one of the fundamental pillars of the global trading system. [...] MFN treatment was made one of the core obligations of commercial policy under the Havana Charter where Members were to undertake the obligation "to give due regard to the desirability of avoiding discrimination as between foreign investors." The inclusion of MFN clauses became a general practice in the numerous bilateral, regional and multilateral investment- related agreements which were conclude [...] A long history of GATT and WTO panel decisions have said that the objective of the MFN obligation is that every WTO member has to assure fair competition to imports from all member states, the proverbial level-playing-field and one of the cardinal rules in international trade law.2 When MFN Does Not Apply There is an important qualification to the MFN rule, however.

This book was released on 2018-06-27 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,9, Cologne Business School Köln, language: English, abstract: The following paper refers to the potential of international free trade agreements to create interconnected economic markets, which require a common trade policy of the contracting countries. The difficulty in this approach is to ensure an economic integration of both countries on the basis of bilateral treaties, despite differing cultural, social and economic attitudes. As an effect of the continuing globalization and the increased international interconnectedness, there is generally a rising number of international free trade agreements among countries with the intention to achieve economic growth and welfare that on the other hand simultaneously led to an increased amount of criticism arising from non-governmental organizations, consumer protection organizations or environmental groups. This oppositeness has received a lot of attention during the recent negotiations and implementation of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the European Union and Canada. Similar to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), which is a foreseen free trade agreement between the European Union and the United States that has been temporarily suspended due to huge protests, both agreements have in common that they bear more criticism that than any other free trade agreement ever before. This is why it is interesting to know to which degree there is a correlation of similarities and differences between a modern free trade agreement such as the CETA and an already established treaty like the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between the United States, Mexico and Canada. According to the title, there will be “An analysis of the benefits and critique between the free trade agreements NAFTA and CETA in a historical comparison” with the purpose of figuring out whether a certain contracting country is benefiting from the NAFTA or the CETA or if it is experiencing any social, environmental, cultural, economic or other disadvantages. In the following segments these aspects will be examined, contrasted and evaluated with the support of studies and current data to provide meaningful findings and to give a final recommendation for action at the end of the paper.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International trade has, for decades, been central to economic growth and improved standards of living for nations and regions worldwide. For most of the advanced countries, trade has raised standards of living, while for most emerging economies, growth did not begin until their integration into the global economy. The economic explanation is simple: international trade facilitates specialization, increased efficiency and improved productivity to an extent impossible in closed economies. However, recent years have seen a significant slowdown in global trade, and the global system has increasingly come under attack from politicians on the right and on the left. The benefits of open markets, the continuation of international co-operation, and the usefulness of multilateral institutions such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank have all been called into question. While globalization has had a broadly positive effect on overall global welfare, it has also been perceived by the public as damaging communities and social classes in the industrialized world, spawning, for example, Brexit and the US exit from the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The purpose of this volume is to examine international and regional preferential trade agreements (PTAs), which offer like-minded countries a possible means to continue receiving the benefits of economic liberalization and expanded trade. What are the strengths and weaknesses of such agreements, and how can they sustain growth and prosperity for their members in an ever-challenging global economic environment? The Handbook is divided into two parts. The first, Global Themes, offers analysis of issues including the WTO, trade agreements and economic development, intellectual property rights, security and environmental issues, and PTAs and developing countries. The second part examines regional and country-specific agreements and issues, including NAFTA, CARICOM, CETA, the Pacific Alliance, the European Union, EFTA, ECOWAS, SADC, TTIP, RCEP and the TPP (now the CPTPP), as well as the policies of countries such as Japan and Australia.
