Book excerpt: Laboratory flotation tests were carried out on samples of coal fines from three South African collieries. The results indicated that improved efficiency in terms of plant capacity and reagent consumption could be obtained by an increase in the solids content of the slurry and closer control of the sizing of the solids. It was shown that, even on closely sized feed, flotation did not yield a product of truly low ash content, and that this was due to the bimodal nature of the size distribution of the mineral matter in the coal. The mineral matter was present as 'sand', mainly greater than 75 micrometer, and as 'silt', mainly less than 10 micrometer. Flotation proved to be selective only for coal particles containing sand. Separation with heavy liquid showed that coal particles with ash contents of 3 to 7 per cent could be separated with good yield. Since this material showed almost no difference in flotation response from that of particles with a much high silt content, result was an overall best flotation grade of about 10 per cent ash. Calculations of the density of the ash-free coal showed that this increased from about 1,25 g/cm to the power of 3 for particles with an ash content of 3 per cent to about l,36 g/cm to the power of 3 for particles with an ash content of 20 per cent. Maceral analysis would be of interest in this respect.

This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous work showed that the beneficiation behaviour of fine coals may differ considerably, depending upon the degree of weathering and oxidation, rank, and composition of the coal as well as on the various methods and reagents used in the course of preparation. The purpose of this investigation was to study the organic and inorganic composition of three coals typical of the major deposits in the Witbank/Highveld Coalfield, and to compare their distribution and beneficiation behaviour after standard heavy-medium separation and froth flotation. The graphic methods used to illustrate the characteristic liberation and distribution patterns in each coal are conventional densimetric and recently developed petrographic washability curves. The results indicate that, in low rank coals, gravity separation is more effective than froth flotation for the separation of the constituents of coal; in froth flotation, there are notable differences in the surface chemistry of the various organic and inorganic constituents of coal; varying products can be obtained by the use of different reagents in varying quantities and at various rates; in the size ranges under investigation, microlithotype units influence the beneficiation potential of a coal more than individual maceral or mineral constituents. As certain organic constituents are now recognized to be more useful to industry than others, it becomes as necessary to investigate the separation potentials of organic components from one another as it is to investigate the separation of mineral matter from organic constituents.

Download or read book Column Flotation written by Jim A. Finch and published by Elsevier Science & Technology. This book was released on 1990 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardbound. Column flotation is one of the most important new developments to emerge in mineral processing technology in the last 50 years. Currently there is much research and development interest worldwide, and Professors Finch and Dobby are among the leading practitioners in the field. Column Flotation covers both fundamental and applied aspects. Following an examination of the properties of the collection and froth zones, there is detailed treatment of cleaning and selectivity, focussing on their dependence on operating variables. It concludes with an examination of the practical questions of column simulation, scale-up and control. The book is profusely illustrated throughout, with comprehensive glossary and nomenclature sections to assist newcomers to the field. Invaluable reading for mineral processing and chemical engineers, both practising and students, it provides a solid foundation to this rapidly emerging technique.
Book Synopsis Challenges in Fine Coal Processing, Dewatering, and Disposal by : Mark S. Klima
Download or read book Challenges in Fine Coal Processing, Dewatering, and Disposal written by Mark S. Klima and published by SME. This book was released on 2012 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coal mining and preparation have had a long history in the United States and the world, serving as the engine of growth for many industries. Today, new sources of energy, increased environmental awareness, and more stringent regulations from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and other organizations are changing the way coal is found, extracted, and used. As a result, fine coal cleaning, dewatering, and refuse disposal are now at a major crossroads. The increased level of fines, and near-density material in the inferior seams being mined today, necessitates the development of more efficient fine coal cleaning devices. This in turn requires improvements in traditional dewatering techniques to address the need for acceptable moisture levels in plant products. Moreover, the larger volume of fine refuse being generated, coupled with harsher disposal regulations, requires upgraded treatment options. This book is a compilation of information presented at the 2012 Fine Coal Symposium, sponsored by the Coal Preparation Society of America; the Pittsburgh Section of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc.; and the Pittsburgh Coal Mining Institute of America. Provided by international coal companies, major research organizations, technology developers, and industry leaders, the information includes both general knowledge and in-depth discussion on the current challenges facing the industry, techniques for designing more efficient plants, and new cleaning and dewatering technologies. The book is a practical yet cutting-edge resource for plant designers, engineers, and other practitioners, and for university students and faculty.

Download or read book Coal written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-12-21 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coal will continue to provide a major portion of energy requirements in the United States for at least the next several decades. It is imperative that accurate information describing the amount, location, and quality of the coal resources and reserves be available to fulfill energy needs. It is also important that the United States extract its coal resources efficiently, safely, and in an environmentally responsible manner. A renewed focus on federal support for coal-related research, coordinated across agencies and with the active participation of the states and industrial sector, is a critical element for each of these requirements. Coal focuses on the research and development needs and priorities in the areas of coal resource and reserve assessments, coal mining and processing, transportation of coal and coal products, and coal utilization.
