Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1873 edition. Excerpt: ...chancery sittings in Toronto, there was put in the witness box a gentleman of high standing in the community, though, like the worthy Zaccheus, little of stature. As he stood in the box, however, after being sworn, with arms outstretched along the top, and shoulders and head just visible, he presented to the Chancellor's observant eye, as it first fell upon him, very much the appearance of some awkward fellow squeezed into a sitting position as comfortably as the straightness of the enclosure would allow; whereupon his lordship admonished the witness to stand up and give his evidence properly. "But I am standing up, my lord," said the witness, with such solemnity as truth, spoken under oath, could alone give. An explanation of the true condition of affairs was then made sotto voce to the court, and the examination proceeded. A counterpart to this, is a story told of a diminutive barrister, temp. Lord Mansfield, named Morgan, who was so addicted to the citation of Ur0ke's Reports, that he won for himself the soubriquet of "Frog" Morgan--to which, probably, his squat figure gave additional point. Before he was much known at the bar, he was beginning to open a case, when Lord Mansfield, ina tone of grave rebuke, addressed him: "Sir, it is usual for counsel, when they address the court, to stand up." "I am standing, my Lord," screamed "The Frog; "I have been standing these five _minutes."--0'anada Law Journal.--Earlv in the rebellion, when the Federal forces were stationed at Beaufort, South Carolina, thereywas an old darkey by the name of Lige Jackson, who, deserted by his master, was left to take care of himself as best he might. Lige was considered a chattel of...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bench and Bar of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Vol. 2 of 2 The first volume contains a history of the bench and bar of Suffolk county. The introductory chapter in that volume is applicable to all the other counties in the Commonwealth with the exception of Plymouth, Barnstable, Bristol, Nantucket and the county of Dukes County before the establishment of the Province of Massachusetts Bay in 1692. Before that period the last two counties were outside of the present territory of Massachusetts, and will therefore only be considered in their relation to the bench and bar since that time. In 1685 the Plymouth Colony was divided into the counties of Plymouth, Barnstable and Bristol, and in the consideration of. The bench and bar of these counties, before the union of that Colony with the Colony of Massachusetts in 1692, it will be necessary to describe and explain the judicial organizations and the authority and laws on which they rested before they passed under the control of the government of Massachusetts.
