Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bench and the Bar, Vol. 1 of 2 It may be right to state, that in his arrange ment of the different chapters which relate to the Bar, he has not taken the different Counsel according to their supposed priority of rank or standing in 'the profession; but has been guided in the order in which he has placed them by accidental circumstances. This appeared to him the least invidious course to adopt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bench and Bar of Georgia, Vol. 1: Memoirs and Sketches, Containing a Court Roll From Court to From Etc In the variety of matter incorporated in these volumes the author has thought proper to admit several letters written in the confidence of friendship, some of them entirely too kind for publication by himself. While this may be so, he is even willing to bear the reproach for the sake of other days and other associations now pleasant to recall. A number of origi nal letters will be found, however, wholly free from this objec tion, addressed to other persons, all germain to the subject. And here let the fact be proclaimed that general history is made up of transactions not less sudden and casual than those of individuals which constitute their chapter in the world. This current of life, more or less feeble in the experience of every man, gathers up particles from a thousand rills, and, after cleansing the gold from the rubbish, leaves the deposit for distribution among his fellows, - the dividend often being so minute in value as to require a microscope to perceive it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bench and Bar of Texas The definition of that intuitive principle or subtle quality of the mind, which we call genius, has never yet been formulated; at least, it has never received an intelligent interpretation among men. Its source lies concealed in the unexplored recesses of human nature; nor is its presence known until, awakened by the touch of opportunity, it bursts from its gyves, and flashes upon the world with a light that illuminates the extending scope of its own vision. But whatever may be the abstract nature of genius, its qualities are readily recognized and its manifestations easily judged. Its course is upward and onward, and its flight is bounded by no definable horizon, while its zenith is hidden somewhere in the realms of eternal and untar hished light. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wit and Wisdom of the Bench and Bar These pages do not profess to be a complete record of. The jokes or humorous anecdotes connected with the English Bench and Bar. They are confined to those which appear to contain some of the elements of \vit and Wisdom, and rather to such incidents as are at once witty and wise than to those which come under only one of these heads. The field is immensely wide, and it is by no means easy in so small a compass to do anything like justice to it; for where there is so much which is admirable, the task of selection is a difficult one. On the other hand, it is 'not pretended that anything like a comprehensive outline of the subject is laid before the reader. Certain divisions have been selected, and under them there have been arranged what cannot be called more than specimens. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Judges of England, Vol. 1: With Sketches of Their Lives, and Miscellaneous Notices Connected With the Courts at Westminster It is somewhat surprising, amidst the numerous biographical works with which the literature of England has teemed, though many of them have been confined to distinct classes of men, as Bishops, Poets, Dramatists, Painters, Admirals, &c., that no separate publication, in a comprehensive form, of the Lives of the Judges has ever yet appeared. Various reasons may be adduced for the omission; but the strongest will be found in the fact, that those who have been most competent to the task have seldom had leisure for its accomplishment. Even the most superficial attempt could not be undertaken without some knowledge of the law, and a considerable intimacy with the constitution of the courts; and to ensure a successful result, a perseverance and assiduity in laborious investigation must be added, which none but those who have a real devotion to the subject would be inclined to bestow. Lawyers of any eminence, while in the pursuit of their profession, have little time to spare from their forensic avocations; and when they retire, either for their occasional vacation, or at the termination of their busy career, they are either too glad, if any season of activity remains, to throw aside their books entirely, and to enter into the relaxations of society; or too anxious to pursue their political promptings to enter upon a new field of inquiry, the tilling of which must be attended with much toil, and the fruit of which they may despair of seeing harvested. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the English Bar A few years ago when the writer of these pages was engaged in reporting work at the Law Courts, he conceived the idea of putting together in narrative form some details relating to the history of the English Bar, which has played so large a part in the political and social annals of the country. Various circumstances delayed the fulfilment of the project, but the plan was never entirely lost sight of. The little work now presented to the public will, it is hoped, be deemed a sufficiently adequate description of the customs and traditions of a great profession to which this country is indebted for no small part of that eminence which distinguishes her among surrounding nations. The chequered career of the Inns of Court - where so many illustrious orators, statesmen and judges have received their first notions of the national jurisprudence - presents as interesting and curious a picture of manners and observances as any to be found in history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Military and Naval Services of the Inns of Court and the Members of the Bench and Bar: From the Time of the Battle of Hastings IN the following pages I have endeavoured to collect and put together from such well-known books as Foss's Lives of the Judges, ' and Forster's and Carlyle's writings, from the documents in the Record Office, and the reports of the Historical Commission, the publications of the Camden Society, and from the Memorials of Temple Bar, ' by T. C. Noble, some account of the military and naval services rendered by the Bench and the Bar during the long course of English history. In doing so, I have hoped to excite an interest in the subject, which may be the means of leading to further information being obtained. At all events, it may serve to show that throughout the whole period, there have been occasions when from time to time the Inns of Court as a body and the members of it as individuals have played an important part in the military history of England.
