Book excerpt: Medieval stairs, galleries and upper chambers in cathedrals, abbeys, and parish churches have been an enduring source of fascination to historians and archaeologists since the eighteenth century, but their practical purposes have long been shrouded in mystery and speculation. From libraries to lights, clocks to dovecotes, from secret games of skittles played over the vaults to the daring exploits of the twelfth-century Flying Monk, Toby Huitson explores the lofty spaces, nooks and crannies of medieval upper spaces though the interrogation of a wide range of documentary, visual and archaeological materials. Evidence is revealed for over 30 different functions during the period from around AD 1000 to 1550. Generously illustrated and fully-referenced, the text is accompanied by a set of special features and a quick-reference section, making it indispensable to all those interested in medieval history and architecture. Dr Toby Huitson teaches at the University of Kent, Canterbury.

Book Synopsis Historic Alabama Bells by : Thomas Kaufmann
Download or read book Historic Alabama Bells written by Thomas Kaufmann and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-04 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After seven years of climbing into attics, domes, towers and steeples, Thomas Kaufmann emerges with a story of Alabama bells. This story encapsulates the history of the state itself. These bells - some dormant, others pealing still - were forged by the Reveres in Boston. They called Alabamians to worship, celebrated weddings and tolled at funerals. They sounded the death knell for countless parishioners during the havoc of the Civil War, watched over the Freedom Riders and shook from the blast of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing. And while their clear tones have rung out in remembrance of so many of the state's solemn and sacred moments, many of these bells have fallen into neglect, their silence serving as its own reminder of the urgent need for preservation.
Download or read book Exodus written by Cornelis Houtman and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1993 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This HCOT volume completes Houtman's monumental commentary on the Book of Exodus. It covers the legal texts (the decalogue and the 'Book of the Covenant') and most of the Sinai narrative. Beside a detailed and deliberate interpretation it provides an invaluable guide to the literature and the issues. The treatment of the 'tabernacle chapters' is of particular interest. The corresponding sections about the instructions for and the making of each part of the tabernacle are discussed together and placed in side by side columns in the translation. 'This excellent sudy will certainly make history' - M. Vervenne in Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses 68 (1992) 409. '...a splendid work...' - J.W. Wevers in Bibliotheca Orientalis 52 (1995) 743. 'The learning assembled in this massive work will be invaluable to students of Exodus' - G.I. Davies in Vetus Testamentum 48 (1998) 572. Cornelis Houtman is Professor of Old Testament at the Theological University Kampen.

Book Synopsis Rewriting Biblical History by : Jeremy Corley
Download or read book Rewriting Biblical History written by Jeremy Corley and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-05-26 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old Testament texts frequently offer a theological view of history. This is very evident in the Books of Chronicles and in the final section of Ben Sira (Ecclesiasticus). Today there is renewed interest in both these works as significant theological and cultural Jewish documents from the centuries before Jesus. Both Chronicles and Ben Sira aim to recreate a national identity centered on temple piety. Some chapters in this volume consider the portrayal of Israelite kings like David, Hezekiah, and Josiah, while others deal with prophets like Samuel and Elijah.

Book Synopsis The Thing in the Stone by : Clifford D. Simak
Download or read book The Thing in the Stone written by Clifford D. Simak and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2017-07-04 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mind-opening collection of short science fiction from one of the genre’s most revered Grand Masters. Legendary author Robert A. Heinlein proclaimed, “To read science fiction is to read Simak. A reader who does not like Simak stories does not like science fiction at all.” The remarkably talented Clifford D. Simak was able to ground his vast imagination in reality, and then introduce readers to fantastical worlds and concepts they could instantly and completely dig into, comprehend, and enjoy. In the title story, a man’s newfound ability to walk in the past allows him to dwell among dinosaurs, saber-toothed tigers . . . and something even more timeless. In “Construction Shack,” the first manned expedition to Pluto reveals that no matter how advanced aliens may be, even they don’t always get everything right. And in “Univac 2200,” the thin line between humans creating technology and humans becoming technology is about to be crossed—and there may be no going back. Each story includes an introduction by David W. Wixon, literary executor of the Clifford D. Simak estate and editor of this ebook.

Book Synopsis Atonement and Purification by : Isabel Cranz
Download or read book Atonement and Purification written by Isabel Cranz and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2017-05-05 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biblical scholars frequently attempt to contextualize the Priestly ritual corpus by comparing it to other ancient Near Eastern ritual traditions. This comparative approach tends to detect a hidden polemic at work in the Priestly Source (P) which was meant to highlight its distinctly monotheistic outlook. Isabel Cranz reframes current understandings of P by comparing Priestly rituals of atonement to their Assyro-Babylonian counterparts. In this way she shows how the Priestly ritual corpus is highly specialized and concerns itself primarily with sanctuary maintenance. Viewing P in this new light in turn helps to demonstrate that the authors of P were not interested in discrediting foreign rituals or pushing a monotheistic agenda. Instead P primarily aimed to confirm the Aaronide priests as the only legitimate priestly group fit for service at the altar. Subsequently if a polemical agenda is present in P it can be shown to be directed against rivals and critics of the Aaronide priesthood, not other rituals of the ancient Near East.
Download or read book The Model Man written by Hans Krabbendam and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-06-08 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward William Bok was the most famous Dutch-American in early twentieth-century America thanks to his thirty-year editorship of the Ladies’ Home Journal, the most prestigious women’s magazine of the day. This first complete coverage of Edward Bok’s life places him against his ethnic background and portrays him as the spokesman for and the molder of the American middle class between 1890 and 1930. He acted as a mediator between a Victorian and a modern society, reconciling consumerism with idealism. As a Dutch immigrant he became a model for successful adaptation to a new country and modern times. He used his national reputation to restore America’s internationalism in the 1920s. His life story is relevant to those interested in the history of immigration, journalism, the rise of big business, the women’s movement, and the Progressive Movement.
