Book excerpt: G.W.M. Reynolds (1814-1879) had a major impact on the mid-Victorian era that until now has been largely unacknowledged. A prolific novelist whose work had a massive circulation, and an influential journalist and editor, he was a man of contradictions in both his life and writing: a middle-class figure who devoted his life to working class issues but seldom missed a chance to profit from the exploitation of current issues; the founder of the radical newspaper Reynolds Weekly, as well as a bestselling author of historical romances, gothic and sensation novels, oriental tales, and domestic fiction; a perennial bankrupt who nevertheless ended his life prosperously. A figure of such diversity requires a collaborative study. Bringing together a distinguished group of scholars, this volume does justice to the full range of Reynolds's achievement and influence. With proper emphasis on new work in the field, the contributors take on Reynolds's involvement with Chartism, serial publication, the mass market periodical, commodity culture, and the introduction of French literature into British consciousness, to name just a few of the topics covered. The Mysteries of London, the century's most widely read serial, receives the extensive treatment this long-running urban gothic work deserves. Adding to the volume's usefulness are comprehensive bibliographies of Reynolds's own writings and secondary criticism relevant to the study of this central figure in mid-nineteenth-century Britain.

Bumps in the road cause tempers to flare, and Raps can't even seem to get a self-portrait right. Plus, her best friend, Cassandra, grows more and more frustrated whenever they veer away from her itinerary, and Rapunzel's boyfriend, Eugene, feels he's not being taken seriously. But when the group discovers an idyllic village said to be the birth place of the Flynnigan Rider books, they agree to make an unplanned stop. And soon it becomes clear that there is more to Harmony Glen than meets the eye: something or someone is determined to wipe it off the map for good. Will the heroes be able to work together to solve the mystery of the vanishing village before it's too late? Leila Howland's second original tied to the hit Disney Channel show, Tangled the Series, features an all-new adventure starring Rapunzel, Cassandra, and fan-favorite Eugene!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Belle of the Village, Vol. 1 of 3 Long ago - it matters not when - the inhabitants of a village in one of the rural districts of England were not a little surprised by a stranger in the sable garb of a widow, accompanied by a little girl, making inquiries for furnished lodgings. It was a most astonishing proceeding; at least so everybody thought, and so everybody said. Who could they be? This book was released on 2013-12-06 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the same period in which Derek Walcott was pouring immense physical, emotional, and logistical resources into the foundation of a viable first-rate West Indian theatre company and continuing to write his inimitable poetry, he was also busy writing newspaper reviews, chiefly for the Trinidad Guardian. His prodigious reviewing activity extended far beyond those areas with which one might most readily associate his interests and convictions. As Gordon Rohlehr once presciently observed, “If one wants to see a quotidian workaday Walcott, one should go back to [his] well over five hundred articles, essays and reviews on painting, cinema, calypso, carnival, drama and lite¬rature,” articles which “reveal a rich, various, witty and scrupulous intelligence in which generous humour counterpoints acerbity.” These articles capture the vitality of Caribbean culture and shed additional light on the aesthetic preoccupations expressed in Walcott’s essays published in journals. The editors have examined the corpus of Walcott’s journalistic activity from its beginnings in 1950 to its peak in the early 1970s, and have made a generous selection of material from the Guardian, along with occasional pieces from such sources as Public Opinion (Kingston) and The Voice of St. Lucia (Castries). The articles in Volume 2 are organized as follows: the performing arts; general surveys of anglophone Caribbean drama, theatre, and society; festivals, theatre companies, and productions; British and American drama; dance and music theatre; Carnival and calypso; and cinema screenings in Trinidad. Volume 2 additionally contains an exhaustive annotated and cross-referenced chronological bibliography of Walcott’s journalism up to 1990. The co-editor Christopher Balme has written a searching introductory essay on a central theme – here, a survey of West Indian theatre and Walcott’s engagement with it, particularly the idea of a ‘National Theatre’, coupled with an illustrative discussion of the playwright’s seminal dramatic spectacle Drums and Colours.
