Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bell System Technical Journal, 1945, Vol. 24: A Journal Devoted to the Scientific and Engineering Aspects of Electrical Communication T has been known for a long time that all kinds of oscillators are subject to the trouble variously referred to as intermittent oscillation, motor boating, or squegging. In conventional circuits such as the Hartley the phenomenon is most likely to be observed if the grid leak and grid condenser are abnormally large. It is found that the time constant of this combina tion must be reduced as the frequency is raised and as the Q of the resonant circuit is decreased. At frequencies above a few hundred megacycles the problem of producing a practical circuit with suitable margin of stability is quite difficult. With the advent of the oscillator having automatic output control the problem assumed a new aspect}, 2 By application of an amplified control circuit a high degree of constancy of output together with low harmonic output is obtained. Satisfactory Operation is secured, however, only when suitable attention is given to\the characteristics of the control circuit. The intentional generation of pulses by means of intermittent oscillations of relatively high frequency has been studied to some extent, and circuits of this kind are employed in some television systems. Usually the high frequency oscillation is limited to a small portion of the low-frequency cycle, the charge stored during this period being allowed to dissipate itself relatively slowly during the remainder of the cycle. In this work, we attempt to address the topic of oscillator design from a diff- ent perspective. By introducing a new paradigm that accurately captures the subtleties of phase noise we try to answer the question: 'why do oscillators behave in a particular way?' and 'what can be done to build an optimum design?' It is also hoped that the paradigm is useful in other areas of circuit design such as frequency synthesis and clock recovery. In Chapter 1, a general introduction and motivation to the subject is presented. Chapter 2 summarizes the fundamentals of phase noise and timing jitter and discusses earlier works on oscillator's phase noise analysis. Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 analyze the physical mechanisms behind phase noise generation in current-biased and Colpitts oscillators. Chapter 5 discusses design trade-offs and new techniques in LC oscillator design that allows optimal design. Chapter 6 and Chapter 7 discuss a topic that is typically ignored in oscillator design. That is flicker noise in LC oscillators. Finally, Chapter 8 is dedicated to the complete analysis of the role of varactors both in tuning and AM-FM noise conversion.

The wave forces on structures as well as sand erosion both on coastlines and in the ocean are to a large extent governed by the local distribution of velocities and accelerations of the water particles. Our knowledge of waves has generally been derived from measurements of the water surface elevations. The reason for this is that the surface elevations have been of primary interest and fairly cheap and reliable instruments have been developed for such measurements. The water wave kinematics has then been derived from the surface elevation information by various theories. However. the different theories for the calculation of water particle velocities and acceleration have turned out to give significant differences in the calculated responses of structures. In recent years new measurement techniques have made it possible to make accurate velocity measurements. Hence. the editors deemed it to be useful to bring together a group of experts working actively as researchers in the field of water wave kinematics. These experts included theoreticians as well as experimentalists on wave kinematics. It was also deemed useful to include experts on the response of structures to have their views from a structural engineering point of view on what information is really needed on water wave kinematics.
