Book excerpt: The authors of The Pastor: His Call, Character, and Work were all men closely associated, either as students, professors, or in one case a director, of Princeton Theological Seminary, which was established in 1812 by the Presbyterian Church of the United States of America. It was founded as a 'nursery of vital piety as well as of sound theological learning...to train up persons for the ministry who shall be lovers as well as defenders of the truth as it is in Jesus, friends of revivals of religion, and a blessing to the church of God.' A sample of the Princeton view of the ministry is contained in this little volume. Taken together its chapters form a small instruction manual on the key elements in the work of a minister of the gospel in any age and place. These pages combine theological acumen, a high sense of purpose, a vision of the privileges of serving Christ, and a recalibration of our whole vision for ministry. The chapters in this book have been selected from the two-volume Princeton and the Work of the Christian Ministry, also published by the Banner of Truth.

Book Synopsis Thomas Goodwin on Union with Christ by : Jonathan M. Carter
Download or read book Thomas Goodwin on Union with Christ written by Jonathan M. Carter and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-04-21 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Goodwin has been described as 'the forgotten man of English theology' and, though known by some as a pioneer of congregationalism and a prominent member of the Westminster Assembly, the true significance and scope of his life's work has only recently been discovered. Historical reassessment has uncovered that the majority of Goodwin's treatises were intended to form a grand project defending Reformed soteriology in the 1650s against new threats as well as traditional opponents. Examining Goodwin's notion of union with Christ in relation to mystical indwelling, transformation, justification and participation, this study demonstrates the central role of union with Christ in Goodwin's soteriology. The application of salvation, he contended, must be founded on 'real' union with Christ (i.e., mystical union forged by Christ's indwelling) in order to advance a trinitarian, federal, high Reformed soteriology in which redemption from sin is set within a Reformed scheme of Christocentric deification. This in-depth analysis makes a fresh contribution to recent controversy over union with Christ in the post-Reformation period.
Book Synopsis Reformed Baptist Covenant Theology by : Phillip D. R. Griffiths
Download or read book Reformed Baptist Covenant Theology written by Phillip D. R. Griffiths and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-02-28 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God’s covenants form the backbone of the Scriptures. Understanding these covenants is the key to unlocking the treasures that lay therein. This book will enable the reader, not only to appreciate redemptive history, but to understand more fully his/her position in Christ. Griffiths demonstrates the essential fact that there has always been one Church, one way of salvation, and that all have been, are being, and will be saved only through faith in Christ. Griffiths eschews the Presbyterian paradigm which believes the Abrahamic, Mosaic, and Davidic covenants to be of the same substance as the new covenant, only differing in regard to their administration. Replacing it with essential truth that the new covenant, which is the outworking of the eternal covenant of redemption in time, is the only covenant of grace. Both Old and New Testament believers come under the mediatorship of Christ and are members and recipients of new covenant blessings. The author shows how all other covenants, what he calls “subsidiary covenants,” are of works, and that their function is to magnify the covenant of grace, i.e., the new covenant.
Book Synopsis Evangelical Bible Doctrine by : Dr. Keith Sherlin
Download or read book Evangelical Bible Doctrine written by Dr. Keith Sherlin and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-12-10 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over twenty-one faithful evangelical Bible teachers have joined together in this work to both honor the legacy of Dr. Mal Couch as well as to promote a solid, sacred, and safe theological manual for the body of Christ. Colleagues and friends of Dr. Couch, such as Dr. Wayne House, Dr. Norman Geisler, Dr. Arnold Fruchtenbaum, Dr. Timothy Demy, and more, along with many of Mals students and disciples, set forth in this work a biblical and practical theology. The first half of the book covers all twelve of the major biblical doctrines of Christianity. The last half covers some of the hottest theological topics and practical issues that present-day believers ought to be aware of in order to properly defend the faith. In chapter 25 you will meet many of the disciples in Christ that Mal taught over the years as they express their gratitude for this godly giant of the faith. So if you are curious about what a holistic evangelical faith looks like, and even curious as to how dispensationalism fits within orthodox evangelicalism, this book will provide for you a solid resource for many years to come.
