Book excerpt: Experimental programs in laboratories give real results to identify nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) structures but they are limited to knowledge of particular cases under restricted structural dimensions, sizes, shapes, loading and boundary conditions but the computational simulation approach has no limit to its application. Constitutive models are developed to simulate the dynamic nonlinear response of concrete and steel reinforcement subjected to cyclic loading varying randomly in magnitude. The behavior of structural concrete under monotonic loading is affected by important material aspects including cracking, crushing, tension stiffening, compression softening and bond slip. Reversed cyclic loading introduces further complexities such as stiffness degradation in concrete and the Bauschinger effect in reinforcing steel. In this research the validity and reliability of some proposed constitutive models for concrete considering general loading i.e. cyclic, monotonic, partial, common point and transition loading are evaluated. Amongst many existing constitutive models, because of their simplicity and common usage in the finite element analysis of RC structures, only some common proposed models based on nonlinear elasticity-based approach are investigated. These models are verified against experimental data available in the literature and the results are discussed. In this study, also, a hysteretic stressstrain model is developed for unconfined concrete with the intention of providing efficient modeling for the structural behavior of concrete in seismic regions. The proposed model is based on the findings of previous experimental and analytical studies. The model for concrete subjected to monotonic and cyclic loading, comprises four components in compression and tension; an envelope curve (for monotonic and cyclic loading), an unloading curve, a reloading curve, and transition curve. Also presented are formulations for partial unloading and partial reloading curves. The proposed Constitutive model reliability is investigated by RC members non-linear finite element analysis (FEM) using by finite element software ABAQUS. Comparisons with test results showed that the proposed model provides a good fit to a wide range of experimentally established hysteresis loops.

Book Synopsis Seismic Assessment and Retrofit of Reinforced Concrete Buildings by : fib Fédération internationale du béton
Download or read book Seismic Assessment and Retrofit of Reinforced Concrete Buildings written by fib Fédération internationale du béton and published by fib Fédération internationale du béton. This book was released on 2003-08-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most parts of the developed world, the building stock and the civil infrastructure are ageing and in constant need of maintenance, repair and upgrading. Moreover, in the light of our current knowledge and of modern codes, the majority of buildings stock and other types of structures in many parts of the world are substandard and deficient. This is especially so in earthquake-prone regions, as, even there, seismic design of structures is relatively recent. In those regions the major part of the seismic threat to human life and property comes from old buildings. Due to the infrastructure's increasing decay, frequently combined with the need for structural upgrading to meet more stringent design requirements (especially against seismic loads), structural retrofitting is becoming more and more important and receives today considerable emphasis throughout the world. In response to this need, a major part of the fib Model Code 2005, currently under development, is being devoted to structural conservation and maintenance. More importantly, in recognition of the importance of the seismic threat arising from existing substandard buildings, the first standards for structural upgrading to be promoted by the international engineering community and by regulatory authorities alike are for seismic rehabilitation of buildings. This is the case, for example, of Part 3: Strengthening and Repair of Buildings of Eurocode 8 (i. e. of the draft European Standard for earthquake-resistant design), and which is the only one among the current (2003) set of 58 Eurocodes attempting to address the problem of structural upgrading. It is also the case of the recent (2001) ASCE draft standard on Seismic evaluation of existing buildings and of the 1996 Law for promotion of seismic strengthening of existing reinforced concrete structures in Japan. As noted in Chapter 1 of this Bulletin, fib - as CEB and FIP did before - has placed considerable emphasis on assessment and rehabilitation of existing structures. The present Bulletin is a culmination of this effort in the special but very important field of seismic assessment and rehabilitation. It has been elaborated over a period of 4 years by Task Group 7.1 Assessment and retrofit of existing structures of fib Commission 7 Seismic design, a truly international team of experts, representing the expertise and experience of all the important seismic regions of the world. In the course of its work the team had six plenary two-day meetings: in January 1999 in Pavia, Italy; in August 1999 in Raleigh, North Carolina; in February 2000 in Queenstown, New Zealand; in July 2000 in Patras, Greece; in March 2001 in Lausanne, Switzerland; and in August 2001 in Seattle, Washington. In October 2002 the final draft of the Bulletin was presented to public during the 1st fib Congress in Osaka. It was also there that it was approved by fib Commission 7 Seismic Design. The contents is structured into main chapters as follows: 1 Introduction - 2 Performance objectives and system considerations - 3 Review of seismic assessment procedures - 4 Strength and deformation capacity of non-seismically detailed components - 5 Seismic retrofitting techniques - 6 Probabilistic concepts and methods - 7 Case studies
Book Synopsis A Theory for the Shear Behaviour of Cracks Providing a Basis for the Assessment of Cracked Reinforced Concrete Structures by : Paolo Martino Calvi
Download or read book A Theory for the Shear Behaviour of Cracks Providing a Basis for the Assessment of Cracked Reinforced Concrete Structures written by Paolo Martino Calvi and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rational crack behaviour model capable of predicting and assessing the response of cracks in reinforced concrete (RC) elements subjected to complex stress states is presented. The model, referred to as Pure Mechanics Crack Model (PMCM), is formulated and developed in terms of first principles, namely equilibrium, compatibility and stress strain relationships and employs few empirical parameters. Instrumental in the development of the analytical model were the data collected from an extensive experimental campaign conducted as part of the research work. Eighteen pre-cracked RC panel elements were tested under combinations of cyclic or reversed cyclic shear and tension with the objective of investigating the shear behaviour of cracks in reinforced concrete elements. The data from the testing program were used to develop and verify the PMCM, and to extend the database available from the literature which is currently limited to pure shear tests. The results provided information regarding the mechanics involved in the shear response of cracks and demonstrated that rational models of such systems can be achieved. Relying on the experimental findings and building on the framework of the PMCM, a preliminary procedure for assessing the state of health and determining the reserve capacity of damaged RC structures was also developed. The analytical model, named the "Assessment of Cracked Reinforced Concrete" (ACRC) Model, is formulated in terms of global and local compatibility, equilibrium equations and employs appropriate constitutive relationships to link stress and strains when necessary. The input parameters for the ACRC Model are crack width, crack slip and crack orientation which can all be obtained from field measurements. The ACRC model allows a user to estimate the global stress and strain state of a cracked RC element, providing an estimate of its reserve capacity and potentially leading to a revised estimate of its ultimate strength.

Book excerpt: The first EPMESC Conference took place in 1985. It was during the Conference, recognising the success it had been, that the promoters decided to organise other EPMESC conferences, giving birth to a new series of international meetings devoted to computational methods in engineering. The variety of subjects covered by the papers submitted to the 7th Conference demonstrates how much computational methods expanded and became richer in their applications to Science and Technology. New paradigms are being cultivated as non-numerical applications started to compete with the more traditional numerical ones. The scientific and technological communities to which the EPMESC Conferences used to be addressed themselves have changed. The two-volume Proceedings that we achieved to gather represent many of the interesting developments that are taking place, not only in the Asia Pacific Region, but also in some other scientifically advanced parts of the World, and cover a vast list of subjects grouped under the following headings: Applied Mathematics; Physics and Materials Science; Solid Mechanics; Finite Element and Boundary Element Methods; Structural Analysis; Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering; Structural Engineering; Reinforced Concrete; Knowledge-Based Systems; Artificial Neural Networks and Genetic Algorithms; Computer-Aided Instruction; Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Engineering; Geographic Information Systems; Environmental Applications; Road Engineering; Geotechnics; Soil Mechanics; Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics. Two hundred and fifty one summaries were accepted, many of them with comments and restrictions, by the Programme Committee. From these, 153 papers resulted, many of them from Portuguese and Chinese origin, that were submitted to the revision of an international panel of referees from Australia, Belgium, Brazil, China, Italy, Macao, Portugal, Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States, to which we gladly acknowledge our gratitude and appreciation.
Book Synopsis Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences by : Wade H. Shafer
Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis· seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) *at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac· tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 20 (thesis year 1975) a total of 10,374 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 239 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. The organization of Volume 20 is identical to that of past years. It consists of theses titles arranged by discipline and by university within each discipline.
