Book excerpt: Seventeen simply supported reinforced concrete beams were tested to collapse under combined flexural, axial, and shear forces. Each beam had a 12.5-foot span, a 9-by-15-inch cross section, and an effective depth of 12.5 inches. Reinforcement consisted of No. 2 stirrups, 6 inches on center. The beams were loaded laterally through a symmetrical two-point loading system and axially through the plastic centroid. Load was applied by a single hydraulic system designed to provide a constant ratio between axial and lateral loads for the duration of the tests. The two test parameters were axial-to-lateral-load ratio and shear-span-to-beam-depth ratio. Electrical measurements of beam behavior included steel strain on the longitudinal rebar, concrete strain, vertical deflections along the length of the beam, end rotations, and lateral and axial loads. In addition, a photoelastic coating sheet was bonded to one side of the beams and overlaid with a sheet of Polaroid film. The experimental results from the beam tests were compared with data calculated with an analytical behavioral model developed as part of this effort. The general beam behavior calculated from the analytical model agreed well with the measured results, especially in the region up to maximum load. (Author).

Book Synopsis Structural Concrete by : J. D. Davies
Download or read book Structural Concrete written by J. D. Davies and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural Concrete examines the behavior of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures under working load and ultimate load conditions. This eight-chapter text deals first with the analysis of concrete structures as a particular branch of structural mechanics. Other chapters explore the empirical methods and the practical design and detailing procedures. Considerable chapters describe the mechanical behavior of structural concrete, with a particular emphasis on the elastic behavior. The final chapters examine the behavior of continuous beams, frames, and slabs. These chapters also look into the models for structural concrete. This book is intended primarily to undergraduate civil engineering students.

Book excerpt: The main goal of this study is to investigate the behavior of high strength concrete beams reinforced with various reinforcement under monotonic loading with various shear span-to-depth ratios and to compare the measured load-deflection history with the available prediction equations. In this study, eight high strength concrete (HSC) beams were prepared and cast using a concrete strength of 10 ksi. All beams spanned 7 ft. and were 12 inches deep and 6 inches' wide. Some of beams were reinforced with conventional #5 steel and others were reinforced with carbon fiber (CF) and glass fiber grids. Three beams were reinforced with #3 stirrups at 8 inches spacing and one beam was reinforced with #3 stirrups at 3-inch spacing. The beams were simply supported under monotonic four-point bending load using a servo-valve actuator with a capacity of 75 kips under three shear span-to-depth ratios. The data collected in this study included load-displacement-history at midspan, steel and carbon fiber strains, mode of failure and crack patterns. The experimental results were compared to analytical models from the literature. The models are very commonly used to predict the effective moment of inertia of reinforced concrete beams and consequently predict the deflection at the cracking and at the ultimate loads. The study concluded that the behavior of the HSC beams was dependent on the type of reinforcement and on the shear span-to-depth ratio as well as the availability of transverse reinforcement. The analytical models, predictions of failure ultimate loads and mode of failure were in good agreement with the experimental results. For the HSC beams reinforced with steel bars, Branson's deflection equation highly overestimated the deflection. For beams reinforced with CFRP and GFRP grids, the analytical equations underestimated the deflection at the midspan, which suggests the need to modify the existing deflection equations when HSC is reinforced with carbon fiber grids.

Book excerpt: This research's main objective was to investigate the effect of combined bending and shear behavior of the concrete beams reinforced with glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars subjected to low axial load less than 10% beams axial capacity. Analytical and experimental study was performed for nine full-scale reinforced concrete beam specimens of size 330 x 430 x 3100 mm casted using sand coated GFRP bars with different reinforcement ratios of 1.7, 2.5 and 3.3%. The specimens were tested under four-point bending, and low axial compressive loading was applied at beam both ends. The analytical model was developed using PTC MATHCAD Prime to analyze the beams' behavior, verified by the experimental investigation. The analytical study results of the beam interaction diagram from all cases show that moment carrying capacity of the beams typically decreases by adding axial load in the range of 2.0 to 4.0% of the axial capacity of the sections.
