Download or read book Soil Heavy Metals written by Irena Sherameti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-01-12 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human activities have dramatically changed the composition and organisation of soils. Industrial and urban wastes, agricultural application and also mining activities resulted in an increased concentration of heavy metals in soils. How plants and soil microorganisms cope with this situation and the sophisticated techniques developed for survival in contaminated soils is discussed in this volume. The topics presented include: the general role of heavy metals in biological soil systems; the relation of inorganic and organic pollutions; heavy metal, salt tolerance and combined effects with salinity; effects on abuscular mycorrhizal and on saprophytic soil fungi; heavy metal resistance by streptomycetes; trace element determination of environmental samples; the use of microbiological communities as indicators; phytostabilization of lead polluted sites by native plants; effects of soil earthworms on removal of heavy metals and the remediation of heavy metal contaminated tropical land.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trace metals occur as natural constituents of the earth's crust, and are ever present constituents of soils, natural waters and living matter. The biological significance of this disparate assemblage of elements has gradually been uncovered during the twentieth century; the resultant picture is one of ever-increasing complexity. Several of these elements have been demonstrated to be essential to the functions of living organisms, others appear to only interact with living matter in a toxic manner, whilst an ever-decreasing number do not fall conveniently into either category. When the interactions between trace metals and plants are considered, one must take full account of the known chemical properties of each element. Consideration must be given to differences in chemical reactivity, solubility and to interactions with other inorganic and organic molecules. A clear understanding of the basic chemical properties of an element of interest is an essential pre-requisite to any subsequent consideration of its biological significance. Due consideration to basic chemical considerations is a theme which runs through the collection of chapters in both volumes.

Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Site Remediation by : John Pichtel
Download or read book Fundamentals of Site Remediation written by John Pichtel and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition discusses chemical and engineering principles as they apply to the cleanup and removal of hazardous chemicals from soil and groundwater. There is emphasis on environmental chemistry, soil science, microbiology, and plant science. The first part of the book provides an overview of the recent history of environmental contamination and the formulation of relevant regulations for hazardous waste site remediation. This part also provides a background for several salient aspects of site remediation (e.g., soil science, the site assessment process). The second part of the book examines field remediation technologies, including phytoremediation, bioremediation, and several chemical and physical technologies. Theory of operation, practical considerations, and possible environmental impacts and other consequences of their use are discussed. Covers both metal- and hydrocarbon-based contamination and remediation Many competitors only address one industry, or source, of contamination—this title provides an overview of all of the sources. Presents both the assessment of contaminated sites and the technologies currently available for environmental cleanup Effective for use in field situations and for academic (i.e., university course) use. Two new chapters: (i) the use of nanomaterials for remediation of contaminated soil and water; and (ii) revegetation of severely disturbed sites.
Book Synopsis Heavy Metal Toxicity: Environmental Concerns, Remediation and Opportunities by : Rajeev Pratap Singh
Download or read book Heavy Metal Toxicity: Environmental Concerns, Remediation and Opportunities written by Rajeev Pratap Singh and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-24 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This contributed volume covers a comprehensive account of the sources, toxic biological as well as environmental impacts, and possible remediation strategies for contamination by heavy metals. In biological systems, toxic metals affect the integrity of cellular organelles and act as carcinogens causing chromosomal aberrations or as systemic toxicants leading to cardiovascular, neurobehavioral, and immunological disorders. In plants, they interfere with photosynthesis, fertility, metabolite, and chlorophyll synthesis. Toxicity induced by heavy metals involves mechanistic approaches that need to be understood properly. They cannot be degraded by biological or chemical means and thus can only be converted to less harmful forms. The conventional detection methods include biosensors, voltammetry, atomic absorption spectrometry, and inductively coupled plasma with atomic emission spectrometry. All such strategies for metal detection and mitigation strategies are covered in this title under one section. This book incorporates classical views along with modern scientific approaches to develop an understanding of the subject matter suitable for academicians, researchers, planners, policymakers, NGOs, and environmental consultancies and raise awareness on this concern. Topics representing diverse sections namely environmental impacts, biological effects, and methods used for detection and remediation have been included to address all possible contemporary issues on the topic in one concise volume.

Book Synopsis Heavy Metals in Soils and Plants by : Pushpika Freitas
Download or read book Heavy Metals in Soils and Plants written by Pushpika Freitas and published by Scitus Academics LLC. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil, one of the most important natural resources, is becoming degraded due to anthropogenic activities such as mining, agricultural activities, sewage sludge, fossil fuel combustion, metallurgical and chemical industries and electronics. Soil is a crucial component of rural and urban environments, and in both places land management is the key to soil quality. This series of technical notes examines the urban activities that cause soil degradation, and the management practices that protect the functions urban societies demand from soil. This technical note focuses on heavy metal soil contamination. Mining, manufacturing, and the use of synthetic products e.g. pesticides, paints, batteries, industrial waste, and land application of industrial or domestic sludge can result in heavy metal contamination of urban and agricultural soils. Heavy metals also occur naturally, but rarely at toxic levels.
