Download or read book Drilled Shaft Manual: Construction procedures and design for axial loading written by Lymon C. Reese and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drilled shafts have been used on a limited scale for many years as an alternative to driven piles in a variety of foundation problems. However, uncertainty about the behavior of the drilled shaft has forestalled widespread adoption. The subject package, by Dr. Lymon C. Reese of the University of Texas, is intended for use by bridge engineers, geotechnical engineers, and builders of pile foundations. The manual contains rational procedures and practical guidelines for the design and construction of drilled shaft foundations. Volume I presents a rational design procedure for drilled shafts under axial loading and includes guidelines on construction methods, inspection, load testing, specifications, and cost estimates. Volume II presents alternative methods for computing the response of the shaft to lateral loading and presents the structural design of the shaft for axial and/or lateral loading.

Book Synopsis The Foundation Engineering Handbook by : Manjriker Gunaratne
Download or read book The Foundation Engineering Handbook written by Manjriker Gunaratne and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-01-13 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Great strides have been made in the art of foundation design during the last two decades. In situ testing, site improvement techniques, the use of geogrids in the design of retaining walls, modified ACI codes, and ground deformation modeling using finite elements are but a few of the developments that have significantly advanced foundation engineering in recent years. What has been lacking, however, is a comprehensive reference for foundation engineers that incorporates these state-of-the-art concepts and techniques. The Foundation Engineering Handbook fills that void. It presents both classical and state-of-the-art design and analysis techniques for earthen structures, and covers basic soil mechanics and soil and groundwater modeling concepts along with the latest research results. It addresses isolated and shallow footings, retaining structures, and modern methods of pile construction monitoring, as well as stability analysis and ground improvement methods. The handbook also covers reliability-based design and LRFD (Load Resistance Factor Design)-concepts not addressed in most foundation engineering texts. Easy-to-follow numerical design examples illustrate each technique. Along with its unique, comprehensive coverage, the clear, concise discussions and logical organization of The Foundation Engineering Handbook make it the one quick reference every practitioner and student in the field needs.

Book Synopsis Model Uncertainties in Foundation Design by : Chong Tang
Download or read book Model Uncertainties in Foundation Design written by Chong Tang and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-03-17 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Model Uncertainties in Foundation Design is unique in the compilation of the largest and the most diverse load test databases to date, covering many foundation types (shallow foundations, spudcans, driven piles, drilled shafts, rock sockets and helical piles) and a wide range of ground conditions (soil to soft rock). All databases with names prefixed by NUS are available upon request. This book presents a comprehensive evaluation of the model factor mean (bias) and coefficient of variation (COV) for ultimate and serviceability limit state based on these databases. These statistics can be used directly for AASHTO LRFD calibration. Besides load test databases, performance databases for other geo-structures and their model factor statistics are provided. Based on this extensive literature survey, a practical three-tier scheme for classifying the model uncertainty of geo-structures according to the model factor mean and COV is proposed. This empirically grounded scheme can underpin the calibration of resistance factors as a function of the degree of understanding – a concept already adopted in the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code and being considered for the new draft for Eurocode 7 Part 1 (EN 1997-1:202x). The helical pile research in Chapter 7 was recognised by the 2020 ASCE Norman Medal.

Book Synopsis The Pressuremeter by : Jean-Louis Briaud
Download or read book The Pressuremeter written by Jean-Louis Briaud and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic title deals presents all one needs to know about pressuremeter test, a soil and rock test used in civil engineering. It consists of placing a cylindrical probe in the ground and expanding the probe to pressurize the soil or the rock horizontally. The pressure on the soil and the relative increase in cavity radius are obtained and give an in situ stress strain curve. The pressuremeter test is repeated at various depths in order to obtain profiles of soil parameters. The design applications of the preboring pressuremeter test include: shallow foundations under vertical loads, deep foundations under vertical and horizontal loads, ground anchors, cantilever drilled shaft walls and anchored bulkheads, pavements, stone columns, ground improvement and compaction control.

Book Synopsis Geotechnical Related Development and Implementation of Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Methods by : George G. Goble
Download or read book Geotechnical Related Development and Implementation of Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Methods written by George G. Goble and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1999 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis report will be of interest to geotechnical, structural, and bridge engineers, especially those involved in the development and implementation of the geotechnical aspects of the AASHTO Bridge Code. The synthesis documents a review of geotechnical related LRFD specifications and their development worldwide to compare them with the current AASHTO LRFD Bridge Code. Design procedures for foundations, earth retaining structures, and culverts are summarized and compared with the methods specified by the AASHTO code. This TRB report provides information designed to assist engineers in implementing the geotechnical features of LRFD methods. Information for the synthesis was collected by surveying U.S. and Canadian transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search using domestic and international sources. Interviews were also conducted with selected international experts. The limited available experience in the United States and information from international practice are discussed to understand the problems that have arisen in order that solutions may be found. Based on the studies reported here, suggestions for improving the code are identified.
