Book excerpt: Easily the most controversial antislavery novel written in antebellum America, and one of the best-selling books of the nineteenth century, Uncle Tom's Cabin is often credited with intensifying the sectional conflict that led to the Civil War. In his introduction, David Bromwich places Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel in its Victorian contexts and reminds us why it is an enduring work of literary and moral imagination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume Two of the Harriet Beecher Stowe classic. Originally published beginning June 5, 1851 as a serial in The National Era, an abolitionist weekly published in Washington, DC., Stowe's anti-slavery novel was finished forty-three chapters and one year later. John Jewett's small publishing house published the book on March 20, 1852, a couple of weeks before the serial ended. Uncle Tom's Cabin was the best-selling novel of the 19th century and is credited with significantly advancing the abolitionist cause. Its historical impact was so great that it spawned the mythical story that Abraham Lincoln, upon meeting Stowe near the start of the Civil War, was heard to say, ""So this is the little lady who started this great war.""

This book was released on 2021-03-20 with total page 1073 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. “No! no! no! my soul an’t yours, Mas’r! You haven’t bought it,—ye can’t buy it! It’s been bought and paid for, by one that is able to keep it;—no matter, no matter, you can’t harm me!” 헨리 데이비드 소로(Henry David Thoreau)는 도망자 노예 법(Fugitive Slave Act of 1850)에 대한 비판하였으며, 노예제에 대한 연구를 바탕으로 자유주의자(The Liberator) 신문을 통해 매사추세츠 주의 노예 제도(Slavery in Massachusetts)(1854)를 발표하였습니다. (A Yankee in Canada, with Anti-Slavery and Reform Papers)(1866)는 매사추세츠 주의 노예 제도(Slavery in Massachusetts)(1854)를 비롯해 자유에 관해 집필한 작품을 모은 선집입니다. (The Man That Was A Thing). (Glasgow New Association for the Abolition of Slavery)(1953)의 결성으로 이어집니다. “When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you until it seems that you cannot hold on for a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time when the tide will turn.” 미국 최초의 밀리언셀러 작가(America's first million seller), 해리엇 비처 스토(Harriet Beecher Stowe)(1811~1896) 03. 도망자 노예 법(Fugitive Slave Act of 1850) 04. 국립 여성 명예의 전당(National Women's Hall of Fame)(1986) 07. (Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe)(1852) I. Book excerpt: This is an annotated version of the book1. contains an updated biography of the author at the end of the book for a better understanding of the text.2. This book has been checked and corrected for spelling errorsIn Which the Reader Is Introduced to a Man of HumanityLate in the afternoon of a chilly day in February, two gentlemen weresitting alone over their wine, in a well-furnished dining parlor, inthe town of P----, in Kentucky. There were no servants present, and thegentlemen, with chairs closely approaching, seemed to be discussing somesubject with great earnestness. For convenience sake, we have said, hitherto, two _gentlemen_. One ofthe parties, however, when critically examined, did not seem, strictlyspeaking, to come under the species. He was a short, thick-set man, with coarse, commonplace features, and that swaggering air of pretensionwhich marks a low man who is trying to elbow his way upward in theworld. He was much over-dressed, in a gaudy vest of many colors, a blueneckerchief, bedropped gayly with yellow spots, and arranged with aflaunting tie, quite in keeping with the general air of the man. Hishands, large and coarse, were plentifully bedecked with rings; and hewore a heavy gold watch-chain, with a bundle of seals of portentoussize, and a great variety of colors, attached to it,--which, in theardor of conversation, he was in the habit of flourishing and jinglingwith evident satisfaction. His conversation was in free and easydefiance of Murray's Grammar,* and was garnished at convenient intervalswith various profane expressions, which not even the desire to begraphic in our account shall induce us to transcribe. * English Grammar (1795), by Lindley Murray (1745-1826), the most authoritative American grammarian of his day.His companion, Mr. Shelby, had the appearance of a gentleman; and thearrangements of the house, and the general air of the housekeeping, indicated easy, and even opulent circumstances. As we before stated, thetwo were in the midst of an earnest conversation."That is the way I should arrange the matter," said Mr. Shelby."I can't make trade that way--I positively can't, Mr. Shelby," said theother, holding up a glass of wine between his eye and the light."Why, the fact is, Haley, Tom is an uncommon fellow; he is certainlyworth that sum anywhere,--steady, honest, capable, manages my whole farmlike a clock.""You mean honest, as niggers go," said Haley, helping himself to a glassof brandy."No; I mean, really, Tom is a good, steady, sensible, pious fellow. Hegot religion at a camp-meeting, four years ago; and I believe hereally _did_ get it. I've trusted him, since then, with everything Ihave,--money, house, horses,--and let him come and go round the country;and I always found him true and square in everything.""Some folks don't believe there is pious niggers Shelby," said Haley, with a candid flourish of his hand, "but _I do_. I had a fellow, now,in this yer last lot I took to Orleans--'t was as good as a meetin, now, really, to hear that critter pray; and he was quite gentle and quietlike. He fetched me a good sum, too, for I bought him cheap of a manthat was 'bliged to sell out; so I realized six hundred on him. Yes, Iconsider religion a valeyable thing in a nigger, when it's the genuinearticle, and no mistake.""Well, Tom's got the real article, if ever a fellow had," rejoined theother. "Why, last fall, I let him go to Cincinnati alone, to do businessfor me, and bring home five hundred dollars. 'Tom,' says I to him,'I trust you, because I think you're a Christian--I know you wouldn'tcheat.' Tom comes back, sure enough; I knew he would. Some low fellows, they say, said to him--Tom, why don't you make tracks for Canada?' 'Ah,master trusted me, and I couldn't,'--they told me about it. I am sorryto part with Tom, I must say.

Book excerpt: "The most powerful and enduring work of art ever written about American slavery." -Alfred Kazin When Abraham Lincoln met Harriet Beecher Stowe in 1862, he greeted her as "the little woman who wrote the book that made this great war." He was exaggerating only slightly. First published in 1852, Uncle Tom's Cabin sold more than 300,000 copies in its first year and brought home the evils of slavery more dramatically than any abolitionist tract possibly could. With its boldly drawn characters, violent reversals of fortune, and unabashed sentimentality, Stowe's work remains one of the great polemical novels of American literature, a book with the emotional impact of a round of cannon fire. For almost thirty years, The Library of America has presented America's best and most significant writing in acclaimed hardcover editions. Now, a new series, Library of America Paperback Classics, offers attractive and affordable books that bring The Library of America's authoritative texts within easy reach of every reader. Each book features an introductory essay by one of a leading writer, as well as a detailed chronology of the author's life and career, an essay on the choice and history of the text, and notes. The contents of this Paperback Classic are drawn from Harriet Beecher Stowe: Three Novels, volume number 4 in The Library of America series. That volume also includes The Minister's Wooing and Oldtown Folks.
