Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern elephant seals are sometimes called "sea elephants." Why? An adult male seal has a nose that, when filled with air, looks like an elephant's trunk! These big seals, weighing in at more than 8,000 pounds (3,629 kg), look like elephants in other ways, too. Both are large animals and many of the seals, like elephants, are gray. In Southern Elephant Seal: The Biggest Seal in the World, large color photos and grade-appropriate text will engage young readers as they learn about the natural habitat, physical characteristics, diet, life cycle, and behavior of this super-sized seal. A comparison diagram is also included to show readers the animal in relation to a familiar object.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Northern Elephant Seal, Mirounga angustirostris, the guys with the great big noses and the squabbling harems, are the really big comeback kids; and we mean that, because not only are the elephant seals really big, they have made a really big comeback! Hundreds of thousands of these really fun creatures once inhabited the Pacific Ocean, and then they were wholesale slaughtered in the 1800's for their blubber that could be rendered into oil. Only 50-100 of them were left to roam the vast ocean where they spend most of their time until it is time for them to come ashore to molt or mate. They lumber across land very slowly and they mate and molt on land, so the elephant seals were a very easy target for their human hunters. In 1922 the Mexican government enacted laws to protect them, and a few years later the United States of America did the very same thing. Miraculously these grand animals began to slowly reappear! Today it is estimated there are about 160,000 elephant seals! Males have a life expectancy of 14 years, while a female elephant seal lives to the ripe old age of 20! They are pinnipeds and molt like all pinnipeds do (to get rid of old skin and hair) but they do that all at once, once a year, during the spring and summer; and exactly when they molt depends on the age that they are, and who they are! The females and juveniles molt from April to May, and the young males molt from May to June, while the Adult males molt from July to August. They come to shore to mate and to give birth in December and hang out on the beach for a few months, because the process of birthing and mating and weaning must take its proper course. The female mates approximately 24 days after giving birth. The males are 14 to 16 feet in length and weigh up to two and a half tons each, and the females are a petite 10 to 12 feet in length and weigh a mere 1200 to 2000 pounds. This is the first book in "The Comeback Kids" Book Series. It is meant to inspire and to make you realize anything is possible in this world if we stop doing what is wrong and do what is right, and give mother nature the opportunity to nourish herself. The Photographs by John D. Weigand were taken with reverence at the direction of this author at the seal rookery at Piedras Blancas, at the southern end of Big Sur on the California coast, twelve miles north of Cambria.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have come to regard nonhuman animals as beings of concern, and we even grant them some legal protections. But until we understand animals as moral agents in and of themselves, they will be nothing more than distant recipients of our largesse. Featuring original essays by philosophers, ethicists, religionists, and ethologists, including Marc Bekoff, Frans de Waal, and Elisabetta Palagi, this collection demonstrates the ability of animals to operate morally, process ideas of good and bad, and think seriously about sociality and virtue. Envisioning nonhuman animals as distinct moral agents marks a paradigm shift in animal studies, as well as philosophy itself. Drawing not only on ethics and religion but also on law, sociology, and cognitive science, the essays in this collection test long-held certainties about moral boundaries and behaviors and prove that nonhuman animals possess complex reasoning capacities, sophisticated empathic sociality, and dynamic and enduring self-conceptions. Rather than claim animal morality is the same as human morality, this book builds an appreciation of the variety and character of animal sensitivities and perceptions across multiple disciplines, moving animal welfarism in promising new directions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modern-day bestiary of the most incredible animals the world has ever seen—with 200 full-color illustrations Our planet is a writhing mass of wondrous life, positively popping at the seams with peculiar creatures. Life has wriggled its way into every conceivable nook and cranny, and nature has belched out organisms into even the most inhospitable environments. A Beastly Menagerie is a compendium of 100 of these most curious of creatures, from beasts that can fit on a pinhead and survive a saunter into space, to sea creatures just waiting for an excuse to smash a ship to smithereens. And let's not forget to mention the remarkable Jesus Christ lizard, the bone-eating snot flower, the pink fairy armadillo, and the zombie fly. This beautifully illustrated collection will delight and bedazzle fans of the amazing animal kingdom in equal measure. Narrated by the affable eccentric Sir Pilkington-Smythe and assisted by his cronies at The Proceedings of the Ever So Strange, each entry is an enlightening and marvelous foray into our world and all its wonders . . . topped off with a soupçon of silliness. An excerpt Sharks are pretty pleased with themselves, and so they should be. You see, they are basically rippling slabs of muscle in gunmetal grey, with row upon row of huge razor-sharp teeth—awesome eating machines that have remained unchanged for millennia. . . . Of course, some sharks don't look so tough. Think of the bizarre hammerhead, goblin, and frilled sharks. Not that they're to be trifled with. And then there's the cookie cutter shark, a sniveling little guttersnipe who looks more like a fat lady's arm holding a kitchen utensil than the pinnacle of predatory evolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of animal resistance is now reaching a wide audience across the social media landscape. Animal Resistance in the Global Capitalist Era offers an overview of how animals resist human orderings in the context of capitalism, domestication, and colonization. Exploring this understudied phenomenon, this book is attentive to both the standpoints of animal resisters and the ways they are represented in human society. Together, these lenses provide insight into how animals’ resistance disrupts the dominant paradigm of human exceptionalism and the distancing strategies of enterprises that exploit animals for profit. Animals have been relegated to the margins by human spatial and ideological orderings, but they are also the subjects of their own struggle, located at the center of their liberation movement. Well-researched and accessible, with over fifty images that aid in understanding both the experiences of and responses to animals who resist, Animal Resistance in the Global Capitalist Era is an important contribution to scholarship on animals and society. The text will appeal to a broad audience interested in the relationships between humans and the other animals with whom we share this planet.
