Download or read book Work Hardening of Copper Crystals by Cyclic Straining written by N. J. Wadsworth and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Copper single crystals were strained cyclically between constant plastic strain limits. The mechanical hysteresis loops were plotted. The loop shape became constant after a few cycles while the peak stress increased for a few hundred cycles. The effect of sudden changes in temperature or in strain rate on the flow stress was observed and comparison tests were made on similar crystals strained unidirectionally. It is concluded that the frequency factor of the thermally activated process controlling the strain rate is higher in the cyclically hardened crystals. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study is described of the strain-rate sensitivity of the flow stress of Cu single crystals in all stages of deformation and over a wide temperature range. The curves relating the increase in flow stress on increasing the strain-rate by a fixed amount to the flow stress are generally divisible into three regions a, b and c. Region a is linear and characteristic of easy glide. At the end of this region the rate of stress increase with strain increases, and a transition region, b, occurs in which the stress increase varies with flow stress much more slowly than in easy glide. Another linear region, c, of the stress increase versus flow stress, of intermediate slope, begins during stage II and is characteristic of the latter part of stage II and of stage III of the work-hardening curves. The lower the test temperature, the greater is the range in stage II in which the linear region c applies. There is no change in the curves of the stress increase versus flow stress at the onset of stage III. The slope of region c is similar for crystals deforming by single or double slip, and is of the same order of magnitude as that for polycrystals. The results agree with those of previous workers in that the temperature dependence of the flow stress is greater during easy glide than in stages II and III. The two linear regions, a and c, are thought to correspond to two different arrangements of dislocations, the transition from one type of arrangement to the other taking place in region b. (Author).
Book Synopsis Understanding Materials by : Colin Humphreys
Download or read book Understanding Materials written by Colin Humphreys and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-01-29 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a very special book for two reasons. First, it is a tribute to Professor Sir Peter Hirsch from his students, colleagues and friends. Second, it is a collection of specially written review articles by world-class scientists that take the readers from the origins of modem materials science through to the cutting edge of the subject in the twenty- first century. The book will be a valuable resource for all researchers in materials science, particularly those specialising in electron microscopy and diffraction, and in the mechanical properties of materials. The front and back covers of this book are coloured images of historic electron micrographs depicting the first observation in the world of moving dislocations. The pictures were taken by Mike Whelan, then a research student of Peter Hirsch. The image on the front cover is before some dislocations have moved, and the back cover image is after the movement. See if you can spot the difference! This book had its genesis in a symposium organised by Mike Goringe, John Hutchison and myself to mark the retirement of Peter Hirsch from the Isaac Wolfson Chair of Metallurgy at Oxford. This symposium brought together a large number of Peter's former students and colleagues. Some of the most distinguished of these have now written the chapters in this book. The opening chapter, by Professor Ugo Valdre, provides a fascinating biographical sketch of Peter Hirsch from his early career in Cambridge to his retirement in Oxford. It contains many illuminating insights into the personality of Peter, both as a scientist and as a man. The next two chapters focus on the development of electron microscopy and diffraction. Professor Mike Whelan gives an eye-witness account of the seminal early work of Peter and his colleagues at Cambridge on the first observation of dislocations and their movements, using trans-mission electron microscopy. Professor Archie Howie extends this account to the present day, describing nanometer-scale resolution in scanning electron microscopes and atomic scale resolution in the scanning tunnelling microscope.
Book Synopsis Crystal Plasticity at Micro- and Nano-scale Dimensions by : Ronald W. Armstrong
Download or read book Crystal Plasticity at Micro- and Nano-scale Dimensions written by Ronald W. Armstrong and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present collection of articles focuses on the mechanical strength properties at micro- and nanoscale dimensions of body-centered cubic, face-centered cubic and hexagonal close-packed crystal structures. The advent of micro-pillar test specimens is shown to provide a new dimensional scale for the investigation of crystal deformation properties. The ultra-small dimensional scale at which these properties are measured is shown to approach the atomic-scale level at which model dislocation mechanics descriptions of crystal slip and deformation twinning behaviors are proposed to be operative, including the achievement of atomic force microscopic measurements of dislocation pile-up interactions with crystal grain boundaries or with hard surface coatings. A special advantage of engineering designs made at such small crystal and polycrystalline dimensions is the achievement of an approximate order-of-magnitude increase in mechanical strength levels. Reasonable extrapolation of macro-scale continuum mechanics descriptions of crystal strength properties at micro- to nano-indentation hardness measurements are demonstrated, in addition to reports on persistent slip band observations and fatigue cracking behaviors. High-entropy alloy, superalloy and energetic crystal properties are reported along with descriptions of deformation rate sensitivities, grain boundary structures, nano-cutting, void nucleation/growth micromechanics and micro-composite electrical properties.

Book Synopsis Fatigue of Materials by : Subra Suresh
Download or read book Fatigue of Materials written by Subra Suresh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-10-29 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a leading researcher in the field, this revised and updated second edition of a highly successful book provides an authoritative, comprehensive and unified treatment of the mechanics and micromechanisms of fatigue in metals, non-metals and composites. The author discusses the principles of cyclic deformation, crack initiation and crack growth by fatigue, covering both microscopic and continuum aspects. The book begins with discussions of cyclic deformation and fatigue crack initiation in monocrystalline and polycrystalline ductile alloys as well as in brittle and semi-/non-crystalline solids. Total life and damage-tolerant approaches are then introduced in metals, non-metals and composites followed by more advanced topics. The book includes an extensive bibliography and a problem set for each chapter, together with worked-out example problems and case studies. This will be an important reference for anyone studying fracture and fatigue in materials science and engineering, mechanical, civil, nuclear and aerospace engineering, and biomechanics.
