This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes 39 maps and plans The Campaign and Battle of Chickamauga, Aug.-Sep. 1863, is an excellent vehicle for a Staff Ride. Because of the size of the forces involved and the difficulty of the terrain encountered, it represents an opportunity to raise many challenging teaching points relevant to today’s officer. Second, the nation has wisely preserved most of the primary battle area in the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park and has marked most unit positions for detailed study by visitors. These markers are linked by an extensive trail network that permits access to all significant areas of the field. Thus, the park is an excellent physical laboratory for the study of conflict at the tactical and human level. The Staff Ride Handbook for the Battle of Chickamauga, 18-20 Sep. 1863, provides a systematic approach to the analysis of this great Civil War battle. Part I describes the organization of the Federal and Confederate Armies, detailing their weapons, tactics, and logistical, engineer, communications, and medical support. In part II, the Chickamauga campaign is discussed, placing the battle in historical perspective and illustrating how the battle fits into the overall context of the Chickamauga campaign. Part III furnishes a suggested route to follow in order to get a firsthand, concrete view of how the battle developed. By following this route, various phases of the battle can be discussed and significant points made concerning the evolving battle. Also in part III are various vignettes by participants in the battle that describe the fight and offer insights into the emotional disposition of the combatants. Part IV furnishes current information on the Chickamauga site, sources of assistance, and logistical data for conducting a Staff Ride. In addition, appendixes give order of battle information for the two armies, meteorological data, and a list of Medal of Honor recipients in the battle. A bibliography is also provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not far from Chattanooga in northern Georgia, the Confederacy won one of its most decisive battles at Chickamauga. This guide uses firsthand accounts to illustrate how this skirmish, only two days long, turned into the second-bloodiest battle of the Civil War with over 34,000 Union and Confederate soldiers killed, wounded, or captured. The U.S. Army War College Guides to Civil War Battles series was developed for “staff rides” on key battlefields by military professionals. Eyewitness accounts by battle participants make these guides invaluable resources for visitors to the national military parks and armchair strategists alike who want a greater understanding of five of the most devastating yet influential years in our nation’s history. This is an on-the-ground guide with explicit directions to points of interest and maps—illustrating the action and showing the details of troop position, roads, rivers, elevations, and tree lines as they were more than 150 years ago—that help bring the battle to life. In the field, these guides can be used to re-create each battle’s setting and proportions, giving the reader a sense of the tension and fear each soldier must have felt as he faced his enemy.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glimpses of Chickamauga: A Complete Guide to All Points of Interest on This Historic Battle-Field, a Brief, Yet Comprehensive Narrative of the Chickamauga Campaign and the Battles Around Chattanooga, With Maps and Illustrations From Original Drawings and Photograhps It is only the lack of analysis and a careful study of the battles around Chattanooga during the months of September and November, 1863, that has prevented the people from justly appreciating those terrific struggles where one-third of all the men engaged were killed or wounded. Now gran ite monuments mark those grounds where heroes fell, and two hundred iron tablets placed at various points on the field tell of the difierent commands and movements of troops. This historical and very interesting matter has been gleaned from the war records of Union and Confederate depart ments by General H. V. Boynton, a noted and gal lant Union 0cer, who distinguished himself at the battle of Chickamauga. These gleanings were arranged and submitted to a large number of rep resentative ex-soldiers and o cers of both armies and all points of difierence concerning the battles agreed upon. The reading matter to be placed upon each tablet erected was then sent to the Sec retary of War, approved by him, and returned to General Boynton for execution. The author has in his possession a copy of all those proof sheets, which form the basis of this narrative. Book excerpt: Longstreet's Breakthrough at Chickamauga tells the true story of the events on that fateful Sunday morning, September 20, 1863-an event that for over 150 years has been shrouded in controversy. In this book, author Robert Carter makes clear the chain of events leading to the breakthrough, and dispels the myth that Longstreet's attack was the clean and easy breakthrough of legend and lore. Longstreet's Breakthrough at Chickamauga may be read as a history of the breakthrough, or it may be used as an excellent walking tour of that part of the Chickamauga battlefield where the breakthrough occurred. The 10-stop, two and a half hour walk leads you to the significant sites where the action took place. Robert Carter brings the story to life with the use of dozens of first-person accounts. Twelve new maps compliment the story, placing the reader right in the midst of the battle. Praise for Longstreet's Breakthrough at Chickamauga: There is no better way to understand a Civil War battle than to walk the ground with an experienced guide. With Longstreet's Breakthrough at Chickamauga you can do exactly that, exploring a part of the Chickamauga battlefield in welcome detail and clarity. In this second of his guidebook series, Robert Carter has brought a key moment of the Battle of Chickamauga to life. I look forward to many more such efforts. David A. Powell, author of The Maps of Chickamauga, and, Failure in the Saddle In Longstreet's Breakthrough at Chickamauga, Robert Carter once again brings us a most useful and enlightening guidebook about one of the more famous moments of the Battle of Chickamauga. He brings new light to various aspects of what occurred there, and puts to bed some well beloved myths about the battle. Lee White, author of Bushwhacking on a Grand Scale: The Battle of Chickamauga Robert Carter's latest work offers a logical and carefully designed walking route through the key area of the Chickamauga battlefield, spiced with compelling human interest stories that bring history to life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The award-winning Civil War historian examines the actions of Union Cavalry on the first day of the Battle of Chickamauga in this history and tour guide. This volume provides an in-depth study of the two important delaying actions conducted by mounted Union soldiers at Reed’s and Alexander’s bridges on the first day of Chickamauga. Much like Eric J, Wittenberg’s “The Devil’s to Pay”: John Buford at Gettysburg—which won the Gettysburg Civil War Roundtable’s 2015 Book Award—this volume combines engaging military history with a detailed walking and driving tour complete with the GPS coordinates. On September, 18, 1863, a cavalry brigade under Col. Robert H. G. Minty and Col. John T. Wilder’s legendary “Lightning Brigade” of mounted infantry made stout stands at a pair of chokepoints crossing Chickamauga Creek. Minty’s small cavalry brigade held off nearly ten times its number by designing and implementing a textbook example of a delaying action. Their efforts thwarted Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg’s entire battle plan by delaying his army’s advance for an entire day. The appendices of this book include two orders of battle, a discussion of the tactics employed by the Union mounted force, and an epilogue on how the War Department and National Park Service have remembered these events. Complete with more than 60 photos and 15 maps by master cartographer Mark Anderson Moore, Holding the Line on the River of Death is a valuable addition to the burgeoning Chickamauga historiography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following his successful Tullahoma Campaign, Maj. Gen. William Rosecrans and the Army of the Cumberland renewed their offensive against Gen. Braxton Bragg and the Confederate Army of Tennessee, forcing Bragg out of Chattanooga and sending his troops fleeing into north Georgia. Determined to reoccupy Chattanooga, Bragg forced a battle lasting from September 18 to 20, 1863, near Chickamauga Creek that would come to be known as the Battle of Chickamauga. Decisions at Chickamauga introduces readers to critical decisions made by Confederate and Union commanders during that fateful battle. Rather than offering a history of the Battle of Chickamauga, Powell focuses on critical decisions as they developed. This account is designed to present the reader with a coherent and manageable interpretive blueprint of the battle's key moments. Exploring and studying these critical decisions allows the reader to progress from an understanding of what happened to why events happened as they did. Complete with maps and a guided tour, Decisions at Chickamauga will be an indispensable primer, and readers looking for a digestible introduction to the Battle of Chickamauga can tour this sacred ground--or read about it at their leisure--and gain key insights into why events unfolded as they did as well as a deeper understanding of the Civil War itself. Decisions at Chickamauga is the third in a series of books that will explore the critical decisions of major campaigns and battles of the Civil War. DAVE POWELL is the author of five books on the Battle of Chickamauga, including the three-volume The Chickamauga Campaign. His articles have appeared in North & South Magazine, Gettysburg Magazine, and Civil War History, among others.

It was the most significant Union defeat in the Western Theater, and involved the second-highest number of casualties after the Battle of Gettysburg. This book is the text of a talk given in Illinois outlining the reasons for the author's belief.
