Book Synopsis Doctors and Slaves by : Richard B. Sheridan
Download or read book Doctors and Slaves written by Richard B. Sheridan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-03-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study Professor Sheridan presents a rich and wide-ranging account of the health care of slaves in the British West Indies, from 1680-1834. He demonstrates that while Caribbean island settlements were viewed by mercantile statesmen and economists as ideal colonies, the physical and medical realities were very different. The study is based on wide research in archival materials in Great Britain, the West Indies and the United States. By steeping himself in the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century sources, Professor Sheridan is able to recreate the milieu of a past era: he tells us what the slave doctors wrote and how they functioned, and he presents a storehouse of information on how and why the slaves sickened and died. By bringing together these diverse medical demographic and economic sources, Professor Sheridan casts new light on the history of slavery in the Americas.

Book Synopsis Childcare, Health and Mortality in the London Foundling Hospital, 1741–1800 by : Alysa Levene
Download or read book Childcare, Health and Mortality in the London Foundling Hospital, 1741–1800 written by Alysa Levene and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-08 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newly available in paperback, this thorough and engaging examination of an institution and its young charges is set in the wider social, cultural, demographic and medical context of the eighteenth century. By examining the often short lives of abandoned babies, Levene illustrates the variety of pathways to health, ill-health and death taken by the young and how it intersected with local epidemiology, institutional life and experiences of abandonment, feeding and child-care. Child fostering, paid nursing and family formation in different parts of England are also examined, showing how this metropolitan institution called on a network of contacts to try to raise its charges to good health. Of significance to scholars working in economic and social history, medical and institutional history and histories of childhood and childcare in the early modern period, the book will also appeal to anthropologists interested in child-rearing and feeding practices, and inter-family relationships.

Book Synopsis Science, Museums and Collecting the Indigenous Dead in Colonial Australia by : Paul Turnbull
Download or read book Science, Museums and Collecting the Indigenous Dead in Colonial Australia written by Paul Turnbull and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws on over twenty years’ investigation of scientific archives in Europe, Australia, and other former British settler colonies. It explains how and why skulls and other bodily structures of Indigenous Australians became the focus of scientific curiosity about the nature and origins of human diversity from the early years of colonisation in the late eighteenth century to Australia achieving nationhood at the turn of the twentieth century. The last thirty years have seen the world's indigenous peoples seek the return of their ancestors' bodily remains from museums and medical schools throughout the western world. Turnbull reveals how the remains of the continent's first inhabitants were collected during the long nineteenth century by the plundering of their traditional burial places. He also explores the question of whether museums also acquired the bones of men and women who were killed in Australian frontier regions by military, armed police and settlers.

Excerpt: ...adjoining building was laid by Mr. Pulteney, afterwards Earl of Bath. Since the Hospital was opened for the reception of patients in 1742, 39,137 persons have been received within its walls, of whom 11,535 nave been restored to their homes cured, and 19,293 relieved. With such abundant evidences of the wonderful virtues and efficacy of the Bath Waters in curing many diseases for which ordinary medical treatment might have been sought in vain, it was natural that the Governors should consider it their bounden duty to take advantage of the earliest opportunity that presented itself for enlarging and improving the Hospital. Through the kindness of Bishop Carr, the present Rector of Bath, the obstacles to the purchase of the piece of ground upon which we are assembled were overcome; the site was secured, and is now the property of the Governors of the Hospital. We have to-day commenced the great work of erecting the new building, and we look forward to its completion as a means of supplying the deficiencies of the present contracted building, and of providing accommodation for patients during the day-time (the want of which has long been felt), a chapel, board-room, and apartments, and new offices for the officials of the institution. I take this opportunity of stating that the present building will be converted into a dormitory for the inmates, and when re-arranged, not only will the comforts of the patients be increased, but we shall be able to provide twenty additional beds, which, if public liberality will enable us to fill them, will allow of nearly one hundred more patients being passed through the Hospital in the course of a year than can be done at present. Let us hope that the work which has this day been so auspiciously inaugurated...
