Book excerpt: Turning loose a Midwestern species of magical realism on a small, God-haunted town in Kansas, Kellie Wells charms strangeness and wonder from what might be mistaken for ?ordinary? life. Here is Martin LeFavor, convinced his father has been nabbed by a solicitous band of aliens in desperate need of skin; Charlotte McCorkle, a vexed visionary who believes she has helped her husband escape the flesh; Zero Loomis, plagued by sacrificial angels, the memory of his father, and a shadowy sexual identity; his sister Rachel, an amateur masseuse determined to settle accounts with the past, in particular with her lovingly violent father; Ruby Tuesday, Rachel?s daughter, a budding oracle, the embodiment of possibility and prey to history; and, holding this tilted cosmos together, fifteen-year-old Ivy Engel, who carefully measures the borders of Self, advocates for neighborhood bats, and frets about the health of her friend Duncan, his harrowed body mapped and perhaps ravaged by subcutaneous scars. ø What happens when the spirit exceeds the limits of the skin? More troubling yet, what happens if it doesn?t? These are the questions the inhabitants of What Cheer, Kansas, must finally face as their paths cross and recross in an ever more intriguing?and perhaps liberating?puzzle.

Book excerpt: Offers a fresh understanding of the persistent popularity and ongoing value of the original Batmanseries. ABC's action-comedy series Batman(1966–68) famously offered a dual address in its wildly popular portayal of a comic book hero in a live action format. Children uncritically accepted the show's plots and characters, who were guided by lofty ideals and social values, while adults reacted to the clear parody of the values on display. In Batman, author Matt Yockey argues that the series served as a safe space for viewers to engage with changing attitudes about consumerism, politics, the Vietnam war, celebrity, race, and gender during a period when social meaning was increasingly contested in America. Yockey examines Batman's boundary pushing in four chapters. In "Bat-Civics," he analyzes the superhero as a conflicted symbol of American identity and considers the ways in which the Batman character parodied that status. Yockey then looks at the show's experimentation with the superhero genre's conservative gender and racial politics in "Bat-Difference" and investigates the significance of the show's choices of stars and guest stars in "Bat-Casting." Finally, he considers how the series' dual identity as straightforward crime serial and subversive mass culture text set it up for extratextual production in "Bat-Being." The superhero is a conflicted symbol of American identity—representing both excessive individualism and the status quo—making it an especially useful figure for the kind of cultural work that Batman undertook. Batman fans, from popular culture enthusiasts to television history scholars, will enjoy this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fall of 1983 while attending the University I was driving in my first car a 1970 Toyota Corona with the radio on one morning. The radio station broadcast an air disaster with the Soviet Union. The Russian port of Vladivostok detected an American passenger jet aircraft wandering close to the USSR submarine base for the Pacific Ocean. The flight was warned to change course: did not and was shot down by a surface to air missile. October 1983. At the University in a night course for Political Science called Public Policy the professor asked us to write the standard twenty-page paper on a subject of our choice. The Iran Contra affair was in the news and the Professor helped with a comment that there would be on going problems and a difficult conclusion for the student. The paper was not finished before the student withdrew but oil came to mind and a high school friend who told his school mate forty percent of the worlds known oil supply was in Kuwait bordering Iraq next to Iran. Therefore, he was in for an adventure for the right reasons. This also started to change the course of the son's life during the fall semester in Manhattan out of West Norwalk, Ct. I ran short of food and started to look toward the military for answers in my life. I needed justice for the evil in this world, three meals a day and a paycheck. My grandfather served in the Navy as an officer during, World War II and my stepfather in the Air Force enlisted rank to second lieutenant. I was living with my father at the time of my final semester who also served in the National Guard during the Vietnam Era. I went to the local armed forces recruiter in Stamford Connecticut and began the application process for the U.S. Navy. The first series of questions were about drugs and psychiatric hospitalizations. I lied. The crew needed my birth certificate and High School diploma both they got in three days from New York City hospital and Hingham Massachusetts. Then education and technical training were discussed and jobs in the Navy. When this ended I was offered two choices for employment, the mail or Core Man. I chose medical and continued with pre-enlistment. I was further screened in a facility for physical health and ability in New Haven Ct and given an opportunity to pass the nuclear fleet exam. I failed. Then I continued with finger printing and signatures plus, drug testing and blood samples for disease detection. I passed and received directions to set off from the Norwalk Ct recruiting station. The final procedure for enlisting; you are on time or in the reserves. I made it! It was LGA to ORE in January of 1984 on American Airlines from Uncle Sam; otherwise known as LaGuardia airport in New York City to OHare airport in Chicago Illinois one-way paid. When we arrived in Chicago our leader was unknown that got us to a bus outside the airport to the Navy Base called Great Lakes. The trip was not really long when we got there the driver exclaimed smoke em if you got em and our entrance was tough your DRUNK! We had small duffel bags with a change in them and nothing else. Our first night we spent in our civilian clothes on something called a rack The Navy started to issue uniforms shortly after we arrived with some very carefully selected boots. My half cut industrial shoes were first given me at 10E and were returned for 10EE with a friendly look. All of our uniforms were stenciled with our names and company numbers. We got an extensive compliment of trousers, shirts, sweaters, jackets, underwear, and outerwear, footwear, and of course the Navy Pea Coat. We were taught to fold each garment in a special way for storage in a sea bag including the Blue Jackets Manual. My service started in January of 1984 and I was to face a cold winter on Lake Michigan. The base did a great job of helping us with weather requirements. When temperatures were twenty below zero to sub twenty they would instruct us to

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Museum collections are often perceived as static entities hidden away in storerooms or trapped behind glass cases. By focusing on the dynamic histories of museum collections, new research reveals their pivotal role in shaping a wide range of social relations. Over time and across space the interactions between these artefacts and the people and institutions who made, traded, collected, researched and exhibited them have generated complex networks of material and social agency. In this innovative volume, the contributors draw on a broad range of source materials to explore the cross-cultural interactions which have created museum collections. These case studies contribute significantly to the development of new theoretical frameworks to examine broader questions of materiality, agency, and identity in the past and present. Grounded in case studies from individual objects and museum collections from North America, Europe, Africa, the Pacific Islands, and Australia, this truly international volume juxtaposes historical, geographical, and cross-cultural studies. This work will be of great interest to archaeologists and anthropologists studying material culture, as well as researchers in museum studies and cultural heritage management.

Book excerpt: In this author's first book of verse, Bruce Merritt brings years of unique poetic experience to bear on the tedium of empty, overnight hours employed as a Security guard, to "fashion the minutes, transcribed in a log book, which fortunately conformed to the ordinary protocols for my assigned post. Due to the Vicissitudes of the late hours, and what I presume to be the whims of the creative temperament, this log-book began to brim with records, observations and entries derived from a waking dream, so to speak. These poems exist on an alternate schedule, the concepts and activities of night and day are shuffled, reversed, at least out of synch, with the so-called normal routine of daily life".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The talented black cricketers who toured England in 1868 have become one of Australia's enduring sporting legends. Aboriginal sporting heroes are found in many sports today, from football to tennis, boxing and athletics, but it was very different in the nineteenth century when the pastoral frontier was still bitterly disputed by whites and blacks. Aboriginal workers on the Wimmera sheep stations began to develop and organise their cricketing skills during the 1860s and were recruited into a team by station owner and former Test cricketer Tom Wills. On Boxing Day 1866 they played before 8000 people at the MCG, followed by a disastrous Sydney tour which lead to the deaths of some players. Former test player Ashley Mallet has dramatically reconstructed this important pioneering tour of England and has also included the careers of later black players, including the famous fast bowler Eddie Gilbert who died tragically without fulfilling his potential.
