Book excerpt: Teen dating violence (TDV) is a serious public health concern that can cause long-term problems in its victims. The present study used data collected in a study funded by the CDC to explore whether self-control operates as a mediator between adverse childhood experiences (ACE) and TDV perpetration. The survey was distributed to random samples of 6th and 9th graders from 14 public schools in Michigan (N = 1236). Preliminary correlation tests revealed a strong negative relationship between self-control and TDV perpetration as well as a positive relationship between ACE and TDV perpetration. Hayes' (2012) PROCESS macro was used to establish mediation, and all components of self-control except for physical activity were found to partially mediate the effects of ACE on physical TDV perpetration.

This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Teen Dating Violence (TDV) is a prevalent problem that adolescents face (Hébert et al., 2017), with negative consequences occurring for those who experience it (e.g., Bell & Bailey, 2020). Adolescents do not always perceive certain dating behaviours as abuse, such as in instances of emotional or psychological abuse (Borges et al., 2020). Additionally, peers and friends play a role in adolescents' TDV experiences (Giordano et al., 2015), while parental monitoring has been linked to TDV perpetration (Espelage et al., 2020). No research has examined adolescents' evaluations of emotional and psychological abuse and the role friendship and parental monitoring play on these evaluations. This study examined adolescents' evaluations of emotional and psychological abuse, taking into consideration the friend involved and the prevalence of parental monitoring enacted by their parent. Adolescents (N = 97, 13-17) completed vignettes, evaluating the TDV scenario and the perpetrators' behaviour: through a 2 (TDV: emotional or psychological abuse) x 2 (friend gender: male or female) x 2 (friend role: perpetrator or victim) design, and parents were asked to complete the Parental Monitoring Questionnaire. The main findings revealed that adolescents did not evaluate emotional and psychological abuse differently. However, when taking into consideration their friends' role and gender, differences were found. Also, adolescents evaluated the perpetrator's behaviours more negatively when they were friends, and when their friend was female and the perpetrator. Parental monitoring was not found to be a significant predictor of adolescents' evaluations of TDV scenarios. Overall, this research advances our understanding of adolescents' perceptions of TDV and how they evaluate emotional and psychological abuse and the perpetrator's behaviours, taking into consideration the perpetrator's gender and their relationship to the perpetrator and victim. Keywords: teen dating violence, adolescence, friendship, parental monitoring"--

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between Teen Dating Violence (TDV) attitudes and environmental and self-control constructs using structural equation models. First, adolescents (N=1236) attitudes about TDV were analyzed to determine if consistent distinct subtypes emerged. Distinct subtypes of TDV attitudes were identified: Very Unacceptable, Moderately Unacceptable, Verbal Aggression and Checking Behavior. Next the direct relationship between subtypes of TDV attitudes and self-control and environmental constructs, neighborhood disorganization, extracurricular activities and parental supervision, were investigated. TDV subtypes did indeed show unique relationships with environmental and self-control factors, further supporting the distinct types of teen dating violence (TDV). In particular, parental supervision associated with reduced tolerance for TDV, while self-centeredness, risk-seeking and low frustration tolerance self-control factors, as well as neighborhood disorganization were associated with greater tolerance for TDV. Finally, the potential mediation of the relationship between environmental constructs and TDV subtypes by self-control constructs was tested. Indirect effects of neighborhood disorganization on most subtypes of TDV were found to be mediated by self-centeredness. Parental supervision was directly associated with less tolerance for most types of TDV, but also showed strong indirect effects via greater reported frustration tolerance and less risk seeking. Implications for research, prevention and interventions on TDV are discussed.

Book excerpt: Adolescent dating violence has surfaced as a significant public health issue. As teen dating violence (TDV) incidence has escalated substantially in recent years, a number of research, practice and policy efforts have been championed in response. One critical challenge in effectively addressing teen dating violence relates to the lack of research that directly considers how youth conceptualise teen dating in the first place, apart from specifically aggressive or violent relationships. This book discusses perspectives on relationship and violence in teen dating.
