When the real Lee Grant's younger brother arrives at the school, along with his fierce body guard, Luke worries that Smits will expose him to the government. However, Smits has come to enlist Luke's help in discovering how his older brother really died, suspecting that he was murdered. The intrigue and danger grow more acute when both boys are called "home" and Luke discovers that the Grants have plans for him that could turn out to be fatal.

Book excerpt: Elizabeth Lovel has little interest in marriage, preferring the intellectual realm to the social. However, after turning down every suitor presented to her, her parents have given her no choice when they accept on her behalf a marriage proposal from Lord Robert Beaumont, the Sixth Baron of Astor, and a man twice her age. John is Lord Beaumont's younger brother, a man who prefers his wool business to the frivolity of the ruling class. By chance, he meets Elizabeth when she is on her way to meet her betrothed for the first time, and he is immediately taken by her wit and beauty. When Elizabeth's life is put in danger, it is John, the handsome man who can make her bristle while at the same time cause her heart to race, who must do what he can to rescue her. This leads Elizabeth to a dreadful predicament. How can she stop herself from loving the man she cannot have, so she is able to marry the man she does not love?

Book excerpt: The post-prandial orator was in the midst of his toast, the champagne-foam ran over the edge of his glass and trickled down his fat fingers, his lungs were expanded and his vocal chords strained to the utmost in the delivery of the well-rounded period upon which he was launched, and the blood was rushing to his head in the generous enthusiasm of the moment. In that brilliant circle of guests every man held his hand in readiness on the slender stem of his glass and waited, all attention, for the toast to come to an end in a final dazzling display of oratorical pyrotechnics. The attendants hastened to fill the half-empty glasses, and the leader of the gypsy orchestra, which was stationed at the farther end of the hall, held his violin-bow in the air, ready to fall in at the right moment with a burst of melody that should drown the clinking of glasses at the close of the toast.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 1235, Pope Gregory IX altered the mission of a crusade he had begun to preach the year before. Instead of calling for Christian magnates to go on to fight the infidel in Jerusalem, he now urged them to combat the spread of Christian heresy in Latin Greece and to defend the Latin empire of Constantinople. The Barons' Crusade, as it was named by a fourteenth-century chronicler impressed by the great number of barons who participated, would last until 1241 and would represent in many ways the high point of papal efforts to make crusading a universal Christian undertaking. This book, the first full-length treatment of the Barons' Crusade, examines the call for holy war and its consequences in Hungary, France, England, Constantinople, and the Holy Land. In the end, Michael Lower reveals, the pope's call for unified action resulted in a range of locally determined initiatives and accommodations. In some places in Europe, the crusade unleashed violence against Jews that the pope had not sought; in others, it unleashed no violence at all. In the Levant, it even ended in peaceful negotiation between Christian and Muslim forces. Virtually everywhere, but in different ways, it altered the relations between Christians and non-Christians. By emphasizing comparative local history, The Barons' Crusade: A Call to Arms and Its Consequences brings into question the idea that crusading embodies the religious unity of medieval society and demonstrates how thoroughly crusading had been affected by the new strategic and political demands of the papacy.

Forced to marry another man when she was younger, Abigail didn’t know she was carrying Cranston’s child until after he’d entered military service. Now widowed and out of mourning, she is no longer trapped in a union she never wanted. When Abigail tells Cranston about his daughter, she doesn’t expect his proposal. But their marriage of convenience could give her the second chance she never dreamed possible. Now she only needs to convince the cynical baron that his heart isn’t as closed off as he believes. THE BARON’S RETURN is a Regency Historical Romance. It contains the themes of marriage of convenience, second chance, and secret baby.

Although her destiny lies in a marriage of convenience, all she wants is a husband who will love her, for her father certainly does not. His desire to see her out of the house is further reinforced in the fact that he has agreed to give her hand not to a baron, but rather his brother! Worse still, the man is arrogant and harsh with his words, but oh, so devilishly handsome. After seven years in hiding to escape a tortuous past, Caleb Beaumont has emerged with the scars on his body as a reminder of what he has done. Returning to his ancestral home to claim the doting bride his brother has found for him, Caleb finds a far different woman in her place. Elizabeth is a striking woman, but her expectations of marriage are much more than Caleb had ever considered possible. Has he made a mistake? As the date of their wedding draws near, Elizabeth questions everything Caleb has told her about his life. And Caleb soon learns that there is no escaping the past, while the future sometimes leads to the same ending he attempted to avoid. The Baron's Brother is a clean and sweet Regency that will keep the candle burning late into the night.

Book excerpt: A collection of Jackson's letters from prison, "Soledad Brother" is an outspoken condemnation of the racism of white America and a powerful appraisal of the prison system that failed to break his spirit but eventually took his life. Jackson's letters make palpable the intense feelings of anger and rebellion that filled black men in America's prisons in the 1960s. But even removed from the social and political firestorms of the 1960s, Jackson's story still resonates for its portrait of a man taking a stand even while locked down.
