Book excerpt: When the twenty- one- year old Natalie faces abandonment and loneliness, she finds herself in the presence of a five- year- old child, who introduces her to his Auntie Ida. Now Natalie has a family that lasts less than 48 hours. However, the hard decisions she makes for years to come will remain tied to such a short span of time. Both Ida and Josh disappear in separate incidents, and Natalie is in a mission to find them. A brief search establishes the fact that the Nazi have killed Ida, as they'd killed, weeks prior, Natalie's own Auntie Julie, the only person left for her in this world. A year ago, her parents had vanished on their journey to Palestine; the Nazis persecution of Jews was spreading like a wild fire throughout Europe. And the worst is yet to come with the break of World War 11.Josh's fate remains unknown, and Natalie must find him at all costs. The search in a stormy day leaves a deep wound into her forehead. Luckily, a passerby Christian nurse named Antoinette, two years her senior, rescues her; stopping a young man driving his wife to a hospital to give birth to their first baby. Learning about her dissolute situation, Antoinette invites Natalie to her home. Politely she refuses; her mission is not accomplished yet. After weeks of futile search to find out what could have happened to Josh, she is discouraged. One late evening she knocks on the door of her newly- found- friend to become an integral member of the family for some time. To protect their children from the dangers of a raging war, the De La Tours move her, along with their children, from one place to another. Natalie's search continues until she receives the final clue: Josh is now in the same concentration camp she has been taken into and escaped, after the Nazis' ruse had hijacked her during her trip to a safe location. Haunted by the promise she makes to the child and his aunt, she puts her life at risk again. Her determination to return to the same camp; leaves Antoinette with no choice other than to accompany her after sending a note to her parents that they had been kidnapped- kidnapping was then a common Nazi practice. In the camp "the- forever-best friends" endure all kinds of sadistic physical tortures and Natalie receives the extra- treatment: rape. Josh is not there. Instead, and oddly enough, Natalie finds solace in the newly- assigned camp's commandant. What reason(s) forces that Nazi to be sympathetic to Jewish prisoners; with a special affection for Natalie- any emotional interest is excluded? He offers to help her escape, but she turns the offer down. She continues struggling, for more than one reason, to survive all the camp's hostilities. The double- spaced 242 page fiction tells about the journey of a Jewish brave young woman, who replays, in a short time, the five- thousand years journey of her people: Both journeys are filled with Sufferings and crowned with victories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of Above the Fold, Dragons in the Forest and The Last Double Sunrise. Like many young and idealistic Australian men, Stephen Conway rushed to enlist in the ‘the war to end all wars’ in 1914. After a hasty marriage, Stephen leaves his new wife with a baby on the way and is shipped to Gallipoli. Very soon, though, the promise of adventure and glory of battle vanish completely as the reality of war sets in. After four nightmarish years, Stephen is the lone survivor of his platoon fighting in the trenches of France’s bloody battlefields. Traumatised and exhausted he inexplicably disappears and the official record of his life comes to an abrupt end – that is until his grandson, Patrick, discovers his diary more than 80 years later. This personal account of the horrors of World War I propels Patrick on a journey to uncover the truth of his grandfather’s fate – which is more disturbing than he could have ever imagined. Set against true historical events, Barbed Wire and Roses deftly brings together past and present, ancestor and descendant, in a gripping tale of war and its aftermath.

Book excerpt: The history of animals and humans as seen through barbed wire. In this original and controversial book, historian and philosopher Reviel Netz explores the development of a controlling and pain-inducing technology—barbed wire. Surveying its development from 1874 to 1954, Netz describes its use to control cattle during the colonization of the American West and to control people in Nazi concentration camps and the Russian Gulag. Physical control over space was no longer symbolic after 1874. This is a history told from the perspective of its victims. With vivid examples of the interconnectedness of humans, animals, and the environment, this dramatic account of barbed wire presents modern history through the lens of motion being prevented. Drawing together the history of humans and animals, Netz delivers a compelling new perspective on the issues of colonialism, capitalism, warfare, globalization, violence, and suffering. Theoretically sophisticated but written with a broad readership in mind, Barbed Wire calls for nothing less than a reconsideration of modernity.
