Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Baptists and the American Revolution A portion of the following work was prepared at the request of "The Baptist Ministerial Union" of Pennsylvania, and delivered at their annual meeting in Meadville, October, 1875, when the following resolution was passed: "Resolved, That the thanks of the Union be tendered to Brother Cathcart for his able and instructive essay, and that a committee of three brethren be appointed to confer with the author in regard to the publication and circulation of the essay." Upon the delivery of the same address before the Philadelphia Association at its annual meeting in October, 1875, the following resolution was unanimously carried: "Resolved, In view of the part which the Baptists of America took in the formation of our government, and especially in contending for religious liberty, that Brother Cathcart be requested to furnish a copy of his able and eloquent address for publication in the Minutes of the Association." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through the Second Gate: Baptists in Action Among New Americans The Outer Gateway to America has swung wide and free and through it thirty million Of human folks have passed in the last one hundred years. Eager, expectant, from everywhere they came with high hopes and bright dreams. TO enter was Heaven. TO be turned back meant black despair. But this gate is an Iron Gate. It admits these newcomers to industrial America, to her mills and mines, her grind and grime, to her sub-american slums and her ugly foreign colonies. Mutterings and rumblings Of subterranean discontent and nu rest portend danger and menace to America. Back through this gate have turned millions, dis illusioned Of their bright dreams, bereft Of their high hopes, with enthusiasm and health left be hind ih what they had once spoken Of as the Promised Land. Turning to the second division of Baptist literature in the English language, that produced in America from, its settlement to the year 1814, we meet, at the threshold, a fact of deep significance. The key-note of Baptist literature on American soil is the bugle-blast of religious freedom! The battle that had been waged\ in Old England for tolera tion, is taken up in the New World for absolute freedom of religious opinion, action, and worship; for the complete separation of spiritual from civil concerns; for the inviola bility of conscience; for the perfect equality of all men be fore God! The first Baptist writer takes up his pen for entire freedom of opinion. Toleration is not the creed for him; he denies the right of civil magistracy over the con science in religious matters at all I In him the genius of the great reformer is united to the meekness, the patience, the calm courage of the moral hero. The grand truth first as serted by the Apostles before the Jewish rulers was now to be reasserted, preparatory to its incorporation with the political life of a great nation We ought to obey God rather than men. God was preparing the way for primitive Christian ity to become a power in the land. He was laying the foun dation of a nation whose glory was to eclipse that of all preceding nations. In this nation, religious and civil liberty were to go hand in hand with knowledge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Dodd at the University of Chicago. Through the courtesy of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary at Louisville access was given to its minutes of southern conventions and associations, and its files of newspapers. The reason for publication is that some valuable material has been collected, not that any merit is claimed for its treatment. Mary Burnham Putnam. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Century Book of the American Revolution: The Story of the Pilgrimage of a Party of Young People to the Battlefields of the American Revolution A few years ago the suggestion was made to The Century Company by Mr. John Winfield Scott, a member of the Executive Committee of the National Society Of the Sons of the American Revolution, appointed a committee of one for the Executive Committee, that The Century Company should issue a book in which should be set forth in a manner attractive to young people the principles contended for in the American Revolution, and a description Of the institutions of the Govern ment. The result of this suggestion was embodied in The Century Book for Young Americans, the story of the trip Of a party of young people to the city Of Washington, written by Elbridge S. Brooks and richly illustrated from the great store of material which the publishers possessed. The book was issued in the autumn of 1894, indorsed by the National Society, and with an introduction by General Horace Porter, president-general. Its success has been great, both as a book for children at home and for supplemental reading in schools, and in 1896 it was followed by The Century Book of Famous Americans, written also by Mr. Brooks, telling of the adventures Of the same young people and their well-posted uncle on a journey to the homes of historic Americans, Washington, Hamilton, Webster, Clay, Jefferson, Franklin. Lincoln, Grant, and others. It was issued under the auspices of the National Society of the Daughters Of the American Revolution.
